I received a free code in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a lot of fun. The world is very interesting and fleshed out. And I wanted to know more about it (in a good way). It's an interesting premise to set the story in a world where the bad guys have already won. And it made the story very cool. It felt different from other books I've read.
The characters are interesting too. They work very well together and their interactions were believable. I liked all of them, some more than others. And I can't wait to learn more about them in the next book.
The story is good and kept me hooked all the way. It has a lot of good action moments. And now that I've finished I can't wait for the next book.
I listened to the audibook with is good. Each character was given a unique voice so they were easy to tell apart. The voice for Drez made his character very endearing.
Overall it's a book with an interesting premise that delivers on it.

I saw the author mention the book was available in the Audible plus catalog and asking us to listen. I plugged it in for the audiobook after i finished the current one.

This fantasy book is not a normal genre for me. However I found it thoroughly enjoyable. I’m not sure I’ll read many more books in series but I enjoyed this one.

Ben Krauter’s The Summoner: Echoes of the Fallen is dark fantasy with soot under its fingernails and a stubborn spark of hope glowing in the ashes.

The premise hooked me immediately: evil has already won. The world is broken, history has been trampled flat beneath the boots of monsters and zealots, and Moon Elf Ezekiel Graystone is left wandering the ruins in search of his brother. From there, the story unfolds like a lantern-lit march through a graveyard of old kingdoms, full of danger, strange allies, and just enough warmth to keep the darkness from swallowing everything whole.

Ezekiel is a gritty kind of protagonist. He carries centuries of grief and the weary weight of someone who remembers what the world used to be, but he never becomes dull or brooding for the sake of it. His determination to protect Davis gives the story its heartbeat, and the growing band of companions around them adds that wonderful found-family energy that makes every campfire scene feel like treasure.

The worldbuilding is where this book really unfurls its black banners. Terrial feels ancient, wounded, and vividly alive. Corrupted elves, inquisitors, outlawed magic, ruined cities, strange creatures lurking in the cracks of the world... every chapter feels like turning over another shard of a shattered stained-glass window and discovering there is still beauty in the ruin. You can feel the fingerprints of a great tabletop campaign here, in the best possible way. The story has that delicious sense that there is always another road to take, another secret tucked behind the next crumbling wall.

Despite the bleak setting, this is not a hopeless book. Beneath all the shadows and sword-clatter, it is a story about choosing to fight for people even when the world says there is no point. About carrying a candle through a hurricane because someone else needs the light.

If you enjoy dark fantasy with rich lore, found family, outlawed magic, and a world where the heroes arrive after the kingdom has already fallen, The Summoner: Echoes of the Fallen is absolutely worth the journey.
