The book is in two parts, although not separately but interwoven. The parts that discuss potential changes brought in by augmented and virtual reality technologies are more credible, although without original, radical new use cases. Most of these have been discussed in great detail for years.
The book's primary objective is to promote decentralized technologies, including DAOs, DeFi's, and NFTs. Despite the occasional, balanced arguments, the author claims that any metaverse without these is undesirable.
The book was clearly written at the peak of the crypto bull market. A year of crypto winter makes one far more skeptical about the tall claims around what DAOs and the likes have to offer. The much-discussed advantages of these technologies are nowhere near being delivered, while their disadvantages continue to accumulate as things stand now.
So far, the crypto world continues to show the same tendencies of centralization for anything meaningful (and a lot that is not). A good, useful decent-sized product requires a lot of planning and decision-making that is perhaps as unlikely to happen without hierarchical decision-making as an orchestra. For DAOs to upstage centralized entities' far more user-friendly, secure, responsible, and legal-backed products, much more proof is needed. Until then, any claims of their superior privacy offering - themselves debatable so far - are far too small for most regular users. They require far too much time, effort, and technical skills to appeal to non-gamers or those not interested in only token values.
DAOs and Defi's have a place. Their developments are making the centralized world work on their shortcomings. But all said and done, it is far more likely that centralized entities with their digital certificates, CBDCs, official fractional ownership tokens, etc., will continue to rule the years ahead until DAOs emerge with something much, much better.

I read a lot of books about Metaverse, NFT...
My summary:
The society is running out of marketing scheme..
Scheme is to cover up the end of physical fiat money, dominated by useless USD....that is why it is good without SWIFT and Russia is smart
OK, Metaverse is bunch of fake stuff trade...you create a fake avatar to play with fake avatar representing by real humans behind (FB communication/stabbing)..then you buy fake real estate by using fake money so you can invite your fake friends to come over to have fake BBQ...
METAVERSE is bunch of fake stuff
and real sex only to yourself..(fake dolls, VR, XR, ER, MR, whatever.....)
AI GPT3, 4, Lamda now can pretty much using massive data constantly thinking like a monk hiding on top of a mountain...will AI smarter than human if his/her brain capacity is 100% while human enjoys, enjoys and consumes and not focusing on knowledge and cleansing of the mind...AI, yes, will consider human eventually as harmful to the Earth and viola...a nice form of Skynet...no war...just clean wipe...give the Earth back to the Earthlings...and to the nature...

Once again the future is rushing at us head on. In the case of the Metaverse we are witnessing the birth pangs right now. The author asks will we get an open interoperable Metaverse expanding human possibilities or a dystopian nightmare run by the usual megalomaniacs. Welllllll. !
The author provides a fairly lightweight survey of the range of possibilities. There is not a huge amount of depth but he does seem to cover all the bases.
Glossy homages to NFTs don't help. A scam is a scam is a scam. However you try to interpret it.
Which is not to say there wont be many great applications of blockchain technology.
The book is particularly interesting towards the end when he starts discussing BCI. ( brain computer interfacing ) and openBCI toolkits. Yes its already here!!!! ( written in 2022 )
I know what I will be having a look at next.
The biggest problem is would you buy a to be surgically implanted into your brain device from some of our current large corporations. Trust them not to do all sorts of mischief. Yeah ... Nah.

I just finished listening to "Step into the Metaverse" audiobook by Dr Mark van Rijmenam. I must say I enjoy this book so much; it has good structure and guides you smoothly throughout each topic.
One of the best things about this book is that the author has discussed the metaverse's good and destructive potential. I think this is crucial when trying to navigate the metaverse in this early stage.
Another highlight from me is that the author also discussed our current education system, which is already outdated, and how metaverse could revolutionaries them for a better future.
Whether you are new to the metaverse or already entering the Metaverse space, I highly recommend this book!

One of the standout features of the book is its engaging commentary on a wide range of topics, including digital avatars, non-fungible tokens, and cybersecurity.
I bought this book for the holidays and enjoyed every page of it to set me up for 2023.

A nice peek into the future of the immersive internet. The author provides a great range of topics that will have an affect on our world, ranging from VR and AR to NFTs and its impact on enterprise, entertainment and social. Definitely recommended for anyone who wants to know where we will be going.
