The Chinese super-AI had achieved its master plan—an autonomous robotic army, air force, and navy. As President Yao and the People’s Liberation Army faced defeat on the battlefield, full command of the PLA was handed over to Jade Dragon, which says it can slay the enemies of China to usher in a new dawn of global Chinese hegemony for the 21st century.
The robots were coming…
With the Terracotta Killers walking the land, Shadow Dragons and Dark Swords prowling the skies, and Sea Dragons roaming the Yellow Sea, a dystopian science fiction nightmare had become real. Machines now dominated the battlefield.
Were these wonder weapons being unveiled too late?
Was Jade Dragon’s robotic army enough to turn the tide?
Every inch of ground was surveyed, monitored, and fought over as man fought machine for survival. Could the arsenals of democracy outproduce China? Could the West outlast the East, or would Jade Dragon pull off the impossible—and win the AI war?
With victory or defeat balancing on a razor’s edge, the Allies refused to go quietly into the night. They had a secret technological breakthrough of their own. Would the ends justify the means if it led to victory or were the unknown risks too big to accept?
President Delgado was about to order the unthinkable.
You’ll love this eighth and final book in the Monroe Doctrine series because the way the limits are pushed is frightening beyond imagination.
I recently had the opportunity to knock another book from my teetering TBR pile. About three and a half years ago, I came across this great little Facebook group, Military Thriller Book Group, which has turned me onto a wide variety of "new" authors - both mainstream, like Carr, Clancy, and Taylor, and smaller independent authors such as Peterson, Lalonde, and Rosone.
The Monroe Doctrine: Volume VIII was supposed to be the final book in the series, but the author mentions in the foreword that the writing team of Rosone and Watson had written so much that they were going to put out a novella in 2025 to finish the tale (next book to come off the TBR pile). ___________________________ Now, I will be honest, I think that I started reading James Rosone's books back in 2022, with the advent of the Red Storm Series, and I enjoyed the series so much that I went out and pursued some of the other series that his company, Front Line Publishing, with the only exceptions being Rise of the Republic series (12 books), The Falling Empires (3 books), and Crisis in the Desert (3 books). I think that I even read one of his books that ended up only being a "one and done". So to say that I have enjoyed his various works over the years might be an understatement. ____________________________ James Rosone's Monroe Doctrine is a popular, multi-volume military techno-thriller series that has received largely positive reviews from readers and critics, who praise its plausible, action-packed storyline centered on a potential World War III scenario involving AI and cyber warfare.
Plot and Core Themes
The series is set in the near future (beginning four years after the COVID-19 pandemic) and revolves around a sophisticated Chinese AI supercomputer, "Jade Dragon," which orchestrates a plan for world domination through a combination of cyber-attacks, deepfakes, economic destabilization, and conventional military force. The United States and its NATO allies must fight back, leading to a global conflict involving advanced weaponry and the ethical dilemmas of autonomous warfare.
Key themes include:
Artificial Intelligence and Technology: The series explores the potential dangers and uses of advanced AI, deepfakes, and autonomous machines on the battlefield, making readers question the line between fiction and reality.
Geopolitics and Espionage: The narrative delves into the complex world of international relations, featuring intricate political maneuvering, intelligence operations, and a diverse cast of characters from the US, China, Russia, and beyond.
Military Realism: Drawing on Rosone's experience as an Iraq War veteran and military intelligence contractor, the books are noted for their attention to detail regarding military technologies, operations, and terminology.
Reviewer Opinions
Praise: Reviewers frequently describe the books as "gripping," "unputdownable," and "prescient," highlighting the fast-paced action and the chilling plausibility of the scenarios presented. The intricate plot lines and character development are often commended, with some readers comparing the series favorably to the works of Tom Clancy. The inclusion of real-world initiatives and figures (such as the Belt and Road initiative and a character resembling Elon Musk) adds to the authentic feel.
The writing duo of Rosone and Watson pulls together an excellent series over the span of eight (and soon to be nine) books, and while there is no exact word count for the series, Google estimates approximately 70,000 words per book, and being able to keep the series straight over the span of eight books says a lot for the authors.
Rosone manages to rely upon his experience in the US Military and attention to detail to write a series that causes many readers to wonder how much of the story will actually be fiction.
That said, on my self-determined five-star scale, I would give this book the enviable five-star rating, as I really enjoyed the series. James Rosone's reading audience primarily consists of fans of high-stakes military fiction, techno-thrillers, and military science fiction.
His core readership includes:
Military Enthusiasts and Veterans: As a veteran himself, Rosone writes authentic ground combat and warfare scenes that resonate with active-duty military, fellow veterans, and their families.
Techno-Thriller Fans: His audience enjoys detailed explorations of near-future warfare, often featuring advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and autonomous systems.
Alternative History and Geopolitical Readers: Readers attracted to "what if" scenarios, global conspiracies, and complex political power struggles (e.g., between the US and China) are a significant part of his base.
Science Fiction Readers: Specifically those who enjoy "military sci-fi" and "space opera" that explore human expansion into the stars and interplanetary conflict.
I believe that fans of similar authors, such as more established thriller authors, including Tom Clancy, Larry Bond, and Dale Brown, would quickly come to enjoy his books.
As with most of my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents' worth.
The final volume of Monroe Doctrine is a fitting end to the series. Like the previous seven editions, the final volume of the story is well-written, has a tight story line, and has the right balance between high-level politics and action.
As you would hope for the final book of a series, the story does a good job of closing out its main threads. Of course, the most important of those is the AI/Chinese angle. The authors could have gone in the direction of Skynet but to their credit, they don’t go fantastical. Like the rest of their story, Rosone and Watson keep things realistic and believable and for me at least, this served the series very well.
Having said that, I was hoping to see more scenes and battles with the Terracotta Warriors. The authors did such a great job of building them up. When they were used, it was to spectacular effect. At one point in the final book, it sounded as though they had five to ten thousand of these AI monsters. It would have been epic to see masses of things charging forward in one final stand. Alas, I must be satisfied with what I did get.
But the real strength of the Monroe Doctrine is its action. Not surprisingly, after writing seven books with hyper-realistic and drama-filled action scenes, the final book delivers. There were many great scenes, but the one I found most compelling was the US Army’s storming of a well-entrenched defensive line at the mid-way point of the book. The detailed use of sappers, armor, and infantry was well done – visceral actually.
I'm pleased to report the Monroe Doctrine closed with a satisfying end. Well done James, Miranda, and Alex Aaronson who helped to co-author books four and five. This entire series had to be around a million words. To keep a million words organized and entertaining – well it’s no small feat.
I highly recommend the Monroe Doctrine series for anyone who likes modern warfare fiction. It is one meaty entertaining look at what World War III could look like.
Book Review – Monroe Doctrine Volume VIII – James Rosone & Miranda Watson Originally, “Monroe Doctrine: Volume VIII” was supposed to be the final book in this military technothriller series but the books are so enlightening and edifying, the ‘wedded writing duo’ decided to do a Book 9, coming out sometime in 2025. I’ll be anxious to read because I’m intrigued by the series’ storyline. Monroe Doctrine: Volume VIII was a compelling and captivating read. Normally, I am not a fan of science fiction books, but love sci-fi movies with great special effects. But this book series is so vividly written, I don’t consider it sci-fi but future technothriller warfare that is imaginably possible. Just as Volume I opens with exhilarant techno warfare, Volume VIII delivers a stimulating addition to the series. The technologies introduced, the political and military strategies, and the small unit combat fighting are fantastic. Rosone – a military veteran – and his wife Watson, have a very good understanding of future warfare concepts and future technologies. In fact, when Volume I came out in 2021, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was not yet prevalent, nor was it a dominant topic in military thrillers. Now, three years later, it has become part of our daily lives and its induction into future military endeavors could be concerning. Rosone and Watson did a good job foretelling its capabilities in the story. On the political thriller level, the reader learns about many aspects of the US government during a declared war. These guys did a nice job explaining the interactions of government, politics, and military response. This is a very intense military action and arduous series, and Rosone and Watson have done a fine job in pulling it off. Though tedious in some parts of the story, I still consider it a good military technothriller. Bring on Volume IX.
Monroe Doctrine: Volume VIII is the final book of the series by James Rosone and Miranda Watson. Even though it is the eighth, it serves well as a stand-alone military thriller. As the book begins, you are dropped into the end stages of a war between the allies (most of the world) and China’s super-AI named Jade Dragon. Set in the not-too-distant future (2027), we find the war entering its third year. Futuristic weapons are believable (and maybe not too futuristic), and given the current geopolitical posturing and humanitarian breakdowns, the book is plausible in a rather frightening way. In this last volume, the allies are finally taking the war to China’s doorstep, having pushed them back from other outbreaks around the world. But China’s AI has begun to take charge of the entire war, ignoring China’s president and generals. Its destruction is vital to the world, and the allies are doing everything they can to make that happen. I recommend the book to those who enjoy military thrillers with a good dose of battle scenes and political behind-the-scenes consultations.
Well I read all the books and waited till the end to review. Its a good sign I read all of then with another book in the mix, which gives you the level of interest in the series. With all that is going on in the world its no surprise the topic is of interest and the writing was detailed enough to give you a good metal picture. But I will say it drove me a bit nuts that when a new weapon or a system was discovered it peaked your interest in how it would change the tide of th war but it just seem to disappear and the follow up not so much, you would get a glimpse but nothing more. I wanted to know what the effect on the bat field it would have and how the other side reacted to the new development but nope. Anyway the series was well with the time to invest to read it through and does give you some things to think about and how close the future really is.
An upbeat conclusion to a scenario nobody wants to ever contemplate which means we definitely will face it. Ethics in development and usage of AI should be at the forefront of the labs, science and technology directorates and lawmakers. Besides the science, this series highlights our nations finest citizens fighting in its most storied and elite units. No matter how gauche our political discourse becomes, our 1% of volunteers will as always, lead the way. Can’t wait for the next series. Thank you both for the dedication and time away from your family it takes to entertain your readers and fans. Cheers.
3 stars. So while overall I liked this series, this last book not so much. The series basically told the story of a WWIII via 15-20 different POVs involving a series of low-level unit actions over the course of the 3-4 years of the war. While a challenging format, I felt the authors pulled it off fairly well. Unfortunately, in this book, I felt they were far less successful. The various vignettes in this book seemed too trivial to matter and appeared to be not much better than filler to extend the series to another book. I would rather have seen the key elements of the book (the war's conclusion) placed in Book VII.
I envy those who can read the entire series start to finish
I’m not sure how I found this series, but I’m sure glad that I did. Each book built on the last to create a compelling story over many years, and spanning the globe. I was always conflicted between consuming the story as fast as possible, and savoring it to make it last… In the end, I couldn’t put any of the books in the series down. They were all great, compelling and thought provoking stories of friendship through conflict. If you are on the fence about picking any of these books up. I would say start at the beginning and buckle up for a non stop thrill ride!
The Monroe Doctrine stands out as an exceptional military thriller series that captivates readers with its innovative storytelling approach. The author skillfully segments the narrative, weaving intricate plot lines that converge in a thrilling and cohesive manner. For enthusiasts of military fiction, this series offers an unparalleled reading experience, packed with intense action and gripping suspense. Each installment delivers heart-pounding excitement that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, making it an absolute must-read for those seeking a high-octane literary adventure.
Before you start this one, please realize it is the eighth of a series: if you haven’t read the first seven books in the series it won’t make much sense to you. As usual, the scenarios, characters, etc. are very believable and I can see something like this happening sometime in the not-so-distant future. Overall, I thought this installment was very good and the entire series excellent. The last half of the book did appear a bit rushed, but I do agree it was probably time to wrap up the series – I am looking forward to seeing what is next in the authors’ imaginations!
While I enjoyed the premise of the story and the technological aspects of a future war, the authors vocabulary between characters, at times, is comical and silly. He prides himself on the realism of his detailed explanation of weapon systems.. however, the irony is that the dialog between soldiers / senior leaders is far, far from reality. Its like Wally and Beaver going to war. “Golly Gee, Staff Sergeant Wally they sure have a lot of IFVs”. Anyone with a day in a combat arms unit knows thats not how troopers talk. That aspect ruined the story for me.
This might be a fictional writing but all during the reading of this novel all eight books, I was constantly amazed at the truth hidden within the pages. Maybe our commander-in-chief should have read The art of war and we would be able to overcome these subtle advances being used to overcome our freedom by this current administration. Technology is always been leading up to such an big Noble and dishonest experience such as the one we're embroiled in now. And what people go about their lives. I could not put this book down.
It is a great collection and (having been in IT for over 45 years) a very possible future.
AI currently is just a fast table look up (for example if you spell CAT with KAT, it will fix it). However, as the list and computers getting faster. AI will do more then just help your spelling. I hope that some guard rails are put in place. Or the future could be in trouble.
Miranda and James, thank you and keep them coming.
This series should be required reading for the heads of all the world's governments. Exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure it should act as a sharp blow to the back of the head of those who believe that war is both glorious and profitable. Apart from all that, it's one of the few series that I have been glued to from beginning to end (to the exclusion of much else!). Characters are "real" and the tech is well researched and believably scary. Fantastic!
Outstanding series. Makes one think about the dangers of artificial intelligence if applied to military applications. Especially so if not designed with sufficient safeguards to avoid potential computer independance. What a wild ride reading and following the story from beginning to end. Great storytelling. Thank You Jame Rosone and Miranda Watson for your creative writing and hours of reading enjoyment.
Thus is the best series I've ever read about modern warfare and its technological implications.
WOW. This author has a (sometimes terrifying) crystal clear vision about the implications of advanced technologies in warfare, up to and especially Artificial Intelligence! (AI)
Well-written, great style. Excellent threading of characters through an extraordinarily complicated plot.
The final was excellent from the Allied invasion, to the Chinese leadership giving control to the AI Jade Dragon, to the battle where the Terracotta Killer attack the Allies in a do or die battle and the dropping of the rods from the orbital satellite that destroys the Chinese leadership and the Jade Dragon. All I can say is that if you haven't read Monroe Doctrine that you need to because you will not be disappointed. Great job James Rosone, Miranda Watson and Alex Aaronson.
I’ve read a lot of this style book, about ww3 scenarios but this a really well written exciting and believable series. Many grand characters and a story that really hooks you. Highly recommend so good I might listen to the audiobook version just to experience it again
Monroe Doctrine is definitely the best series I have read for a very long time Watson and Rosone have outdone each other in presenting these books I have thoroughly enjoyed reading each book of the series and will probably start all over next year Bring it on, guys!
This is one of the very best series I have ever read. It uses today's technology, tomorrow's technology, and even potential technologies to address the things that are truly happening in the world today. It also creates a scary world that we could see in the very near future. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys futuristic combat.
The book, and complete series, is like riding a fast horse. You have to hang on,or you'll be in the dust! It begins and continues to bring current technology and the current political forces into a believable near future. I only hope that we can sidestep that future.
Watson and Rosone have written a great series, both in plot and execution. Character development over the series was well done. I really enjoyed following key characters, both major and minor. Good warning of the possible consequences for AI control of warfare. Now that the entire series is finished, dive right in. You will enjoy it!
This was fantastic and exciting but also scary because of the real possibilities of this happening. I can already see some of these things like manipulation of social media and AI generated false videos. It won't be long before this science fiction tale becomes science
I enjoyed immensely the 8 book series. Great character development on both sides. The battle scene s including naval, land and in the air were very realistic. There was also the human aspect of how home front families react to stressful situations. WELL DONE
I enjoyed this series very much. Each book was hard to put down. I understand where the characters had to have experiences that weren't written. Otherwise the books would be too long, although I stumbled abit when they are brought up. I am a linear thinker, that's why I can't create books. I do recommend this series, even as scary as it parallels life now.
I am a reader of a lot of books. This series kept me interested all the way through to the climax. This is unusual given the length of the series! Interesting characters and plots. There are a few typos but overall this series is well written. I would recommend this series to anyone that reads military fiction or political/historical fiction.
Best future war novel I ever read. Combined real life technology with near future advancements. This book would make a great limited TV series or a series of movies. One movie could never do it justice. Already read much of Watson and Rosone and am really looking forward to more!
I spent enough time in the military to know the language of the troops was not PG. Trying to write about combat soldiers and using expletives like “fudge” is laughable. Excessive vulgarity would be equally distasteful and likely inappropriate. However, there should have been at least some effort to make the dialog realistic.
Liked the realistic terrain and combat sequences. Thought the US political intrigue was too detailed. Liked the little love story twist with spies . Blain was my favorite character. Really liked the maps on website, although for some reason could not access the Pacific/China maps. Good read. Entertaining.
