David Bret's moving book contains much new information, a complete discography and a listing of Piaf's films and theater performances. It is a fitting tribute to this legendary star.
Appallingly badly written and full of errors. But fact-checking on musicology/writers/publishers probably brilliant. Listing data doesn't however make for an insight into the life of this tortured and brilliant chanteuse. Maybe just put her songs on your play list and listen....
This book could have been so much more. I found it a rather flat, unemotional piece of work. told in a rather ho-hum fashion. The author included a comprehensive list of Piaf's films, recordings, documentaries and theatrical works. I cannot understand why he did not go the extra distance and include an index, as many characters are referenced in Edith Piaf's life.
The life of "The Little Sparrow" is so heartbreaking and yet so hopeful to read. Always true to herself, she took life as it came, and rose to every challenge. Her numerous love affairs, especially with her true love, Marcel Cerdan, who died in an airplane crash, left her lifted up and then dropped to the depths. She died at age 49, her body ravaged and crippled, doubtlessly the most revered and famous French singer of the last century, and maybe for all time. A must read for singers, francophiles, and those who love the underdog.
