I was in the mood for something historical with a good plot and romance, and this book ticked all these boxes and more. I’m usually not a fan of reading a story that starts off when the main character is a child but I think the author did a good job with this novel because Helian Yiyin/Wei Chongrong (MC) had his memories from the future and even though he spoke and acted like a child, he was mature and the story was in fact told more in the POV of his father, Wei Zhao. Although WCR is considered the MC, I believe that Wei Zhao is also equally as important and my favourite character.
I liked how the story developed and I think the author wrote the characters well. They had depth and I could understand their motivations, and I especially liked that the author was enthusiastic about her male characters getting together with other male characters, and how it was so normal. Like men could take the Suyun pill to get pregnant so of course homosexuality wasn’t an issue. Speaking of, I wasn’t expecting mpreg in a historical novel but I really enjoyed it, and I liked that there were more than one scene of mpreg and the male characters experiencing pregnancy.
The plot was very solid with good pacing and I absolutely recommend it for people who like historical fiction and political intrigue. I wouldn’t say that the plot was too complex but because of the sheer number of characters, it was quite hard for me to remember who was who at first, but I definitely got used to the characters and how they were related to each other eventually. I have to say that cousins marrying each other wasn’t as surprising as I thought it would be, maybe because of the setting where royals marry royals and all that. Even after finding out that WCR married his direct cousin, Jun Hua (ML), I was like oh okay 😂 Now that I think about it, I don’t think that even WCR knew JH was his cousin because it was only towards the end that we learned Wei Zhao and Jun Qing were in fact fraternal twins who were separated.
The only thing I really struggled with was the locations. I wish I had a map to refer to, but at least the author was kind enough to explain the history and political situations between the Great Yan and the other territories each time, which I appreciated.
I liked the ending because the author gave not only WCR and JH a happy ending, but also Helian Yiyin and Jun Hua from the alternative reality the same happy ending. Regarding their relationship, I did like how it developed and that JH was the one who actively pursued WCR. Their romantic relationship was a matter of course because WCR constantly doted on JH and cherished him since he was born, and they were very sweet with each other. But I also have to say that I was glad that the author managed to balance the romantic and familial relationships in this story, and developed both with intention so it didn’t feel like either was more important than the other.

I also agree with many of the reviews on NU, the first half of the book was amazing, I loved reading about the Wei father and son duo, it was so fucking cute. the second half with the son and his partner was okayyy-ish but it kinda fell flat (like a 3/5)
