This book was excellent. The writing transported me to another world while yet making me feel so much of myself in Tabitha. Can’t wait for the next installment!

While not my typical type of read, I had a lot of fun with this book! Liz Bullard has an amazing ability to keep the story moving flowing forward while still slowing down enough to get to know and care about the characters. Wanting to know how things turned out for Eli and his mission kept me glued to the pages. And the ending has me dying to know what happens next!

I received an early Christmas present a few weeks ago: an autographed copy of Liz Bullard’s New Moon. I’ve just finished it and I’m very happy.

Bullard has been experimenting with the series and kicked everything off by publishing Book 2, Portal, on Kindle Vella. I read it there and was intrigued by the story and her writing. Mostly, though, I had questions. Even though you can read Portal as a stand-alone, it will be a much richer experience with the background New Moon (Book 1) provides.

We start immersed in a battle between the Zodai and the Ox Nation. It’s a bloody, ugly, battle full of swords and magic. We get to see Eli and Talia at their warrior finest. It gives us a nice grounding into their love. The battle ends with some heroics that the Elders of Zodai will find questionable and exact a price from Eli. He’s already paying a price for the war.

Bullard does an exceptional job of subtly looking at how war can follow the warrior into peace and home. It’s an insightful look into PTSD without ever using the term. The reader never gets slapped in the face with it. Instead, you end up with a haunting unease and increased empathy for Eli.

He gets sent to Earth via a portal to find the Chosen One. The problem is, it’s a big planet and the Elders of Zodai don’t give him much of a map. No magic compass, no flashing neon sign.

Tabatha is the Chosen One. I know this from reading Book 2 before Book 1. What I didn’t know from Book 2 was what prompted Tabatha to go with Eli. We learn this and it fits nicely.

New Moon is Book 1 of the Prophecy Trilogy. It’s fantasy, not sci-fi, so no science rating. On the Feral Scale, the story is a strong 8. Book 2 promises to take everything from what Bullard learned from the Kindle Vella version and the fan feedback and flesh it out into a meatier novel. It’s scheduled to come out in May of 2024. I’ve pre-ordered mine and discovered that Bullard also has a novella coming in February that is a side story in the Prophecy universe. Also available for pre-order.

What the heck?

Why did she do that? Imma need Tabitha to be for real and stop sacrificing herself and happiness for two men who don't love or care for her. Family or not. Anyways love this book. It shows how being a people pleaser is not the best and how to become strong in yourself. It also shows how people can be selfish, entitled, and diabolical especially if you allowed it for the "greater good." Time for Tabitha to take control. Let's hope she gets it together in the next.

New Moon grabs you, pulls you into its world and then you realize you forgot to feed the pups and it’s dark outside. This author brings her characters to life and you experience the emotions of love, torment, fear, and joy. I’m glad there is book 2 so that I don’t go through withdrawal.

Again this author set a fast pace.

Not what it appears

This looks like a fantasy novel and it is, but it isn't. The bulk of the story takes place in the modern world with effectively no magic, and the conflict is an entirely psychological one. The characters are sharply drawn and deeply broken, and things do not resolve the way you hope they will. It's a powerful story and I'm looking forward to the next one.

A nice little fantasy read, that starts right in the middle of the action, makes you smile at domestic bliss, then make you want to punch fictional characters, and leaves you hanging at the end wanting more.

I am a huge fan of Liz Bullard’s Prophecy series, and New Moon is fantastic! One of the things I love most about Liz’s writing is her ability to craft a vibrant and diverse cast of characters, each with their own distinct personalities and struggles.

New Moon thrusts readers into the heart of a brutal war between Zodia and the Ox Nation. With resources dwindling and the Zodia Elders divided on whether to retreat or continue the fight despite devastating losses, a few esteemed warriors take matters into their own hands—only for their plan to go disastrously wrong. In a desperate bid to save Zodia, Elder Onmai (my personal favorite character) sends Eli on a mission to find their last hope: Tabitha, a young girl facing her own battles in an entirely different world.

I absolutely loved how Liz introduced Tabitha into the storyline. The dynamic between her and Eli was engaging, and their interactions felt authentic and emotionally charged. Liz has a true talent for world-building and immersing readers in the characters’ journeys, making us feel every triumph and hardship along the way.

I can't wait to dive into Portal next—this series just keeps getting better!

I had never heard the term "romantasy" before this book, but I really enjoyed this style. I'd you're wondering, the romance elements are "closed-door" but as if you saw the couple as they were going into the room.

Subtle details that lend verisimitude to storytelling are always a plus for me, even more so when describing Black love and Black family life, and still moreover, in sci-fi/fantasy where Black characters can simply exist. Bullard does this exceedingly well within her larger talent of world-building and lore- crafting.

I feel the book could be seen as an allegory for shedding imposter syndrome. The characters are varied and interesting, and the pacing balances the interpersonal well with the introspective and the plot action. The emotionality is very textured, and to that effect, I would love to see this book made into a graphic novel and an anime, as I think the writing lends itself to those artistic styles.
