Two entrepreneurs compete for a property, but secure the biggest win of all—each other—in this second chance romantic comedy by USA Today bestselling author Sharon C. Cooper. Spoiled, fickle, and flighty are only a few adjectives that have been used to describe Morgan Redford. She’s never had to worry about money, but she’s determined to build a career on her own and do something meaningful with her life—by helping children who are aging out of the foster care system. She has her eyes on a property that a family friend is selling, which is perfect for these young adults to live in, but her competition is someone she never expected… When Los Angeles real estate developer Drake Faulkner learns that his eccentric mentor is selling property that is perfect for his portfolio, he jumps at the chance to buy it. But he soon learns the billionaire has other buyers must compete in an Iron Man competition of sorts for the property. Drake refuses to play along with this ridiculous demand…until he finds out Morgan, his ex who left him years ago without a word, is one of the potential buyers. No way is he letting her—Little Miss Self-Absorbed—win the property he wants. Bitter? Yes. Petty? Probably. But as the gauntlet of games heats up and forces them to face the past, they are met with a pull that feels all too familiar. Now, if they could only keep their eyes on the prize and off each other—but who’s to say they can’t do both?

Cover: 🌟🌟🌟 This design gives a cute depiction of the story and genre, though I find it quite simple. I particularly like that the main characters, Morgan and Drake, are illustrated, as it is always nice to see characters of colour on a book cover.
Writing: 🌟🌟🌟 The simple writing effortlessly creates a fun, easy read, and I found the alternating points of view (POV) very satisfying. However, much of the story is told instead of shown, making it less gripping.
“So many people went a lifetime wanting something but never being able to realize their dream."
Storyline: 🌟🌟🌟 A quick introduction to the main characters and their rough past sets the stage for a cute, second-chance romance. While I loved how the storyline is given some depth through the work and family of the main characters, I struggled with several unrealistic and repetitive aspects. I was also irritated by the final twist towards the end, as it seemed unnecessary and made the story less satisfying.
Main character(s): 🌟🌟🌟 From the start, the clear personalities and motives given to Morgan and Drake made them relatable and realistic characters. Their interesting backstories and current challenges also brought some depth to their characters, but they needed stronger arcs or growth to make their characters more memorable.
"It was a great reminder that everyone had insecurities. Some that only they could see."
Secondary characters: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Both Morgan and Drake have close friends and family members who contribute to their journey in this book. Despite their minor roles, these secondary characters all had interesting traits that made the story more entertaining. I especially adored Drake’s two siblings, Aiden and Addison, as they were so cute and constantly stole the spotlight.
Romance: 🌟🌟🌟 The chemistry and physical attraction between the main characters are nicely detailed from both POVs. Beyond this, their connection seemed flat and unremarkable since it builds on a foundation from the past that is only mentioned in passing.
Narration & Audio: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Zenzi Williams gives a brilliant performance that captures the emotions and nuance of the characters. She also uses different voices for the characters, which enriches the story.
In the end, ‘In It to Win’ was a fun, easy read with interesting characters and a cute romance, even though it may not be very memorable. French Holiday by Sarah Ready is worth checking out if you enjoyed this book, as it’s another easy romance read.

For those who have read this and want to discuss it, here are a few questions:
Eh, I feel like I just need to stay away from traditionally published romance books. It's not that they aren't good, but I feel as though they can't be as flexible as indie books. This is the second book that I've read from Sharon C. Cooper and while they both have been solid reads, they haven't been the best. Although this book isn't necessarily a sequel, I would like to point out that the hero in Business As Usual is the sibling of the heroine in this book. The conclusion to his love story is discussed in this book so I would recommend reading that one first.
In It to Win It follows two entrepreneurs, Morgan and Drake, who are competing for a real estate property. Morgan runs a center for young adults who have aged out of foster care. She wants the commercial building to be able to house and support more individuals. Drake is a real estate developer who wants to purchase the same property because it has certain sentimental value. The two have past history and find it coming back full force once they realize they are competing for the same property.
What Worked: I enjoyed the humor in this one! There were a lot of fun and light moments that I didn't necessarily expect and it added a different element to the story. And I honestly enjoyed both characters. They both brought something to the table that made their relationship dynamic fun and interesting. Not only did they have history, but they also had chemistry. Morgan comes from a wealthy family, but I was happy to see her defy their expectations and do something that not only fulfilled her passions, but also gave back to the community. Some aspects of Drake's story were heartbreaking, but it provided me with the opportunity to get to know more of his family, namely his siblings, which was fun. Both of them challenge Drake and support Drake in ways that I don't even think he anticipated. Sharon C Cooper also writes in a way that's fun and accessible and really draws readers into the story.
What Didn't Work: Honestly, the whole competition aspect behind gaining the property really bothered me. I don't really feel as though the seller had a reason to do what he did. It definitely moved the plot of the story, but it felt childish to make people jump through so many hoops just to obtain property. Then there was the .
Overall, this was an interesting book to rate. I liked the characters and the rekindling of their romance but the outside elements that impacted their relationship took me out the story. While I'm interested in the next book in this "world," I don't think I'll be rushing to pick it up.
Happy release day. Thanks to Chelsea Pascoe at Berkley, and Netgalley, for offering me this copy to review. In It to Win It will be published December 13th. This rating represents 2.5 stars rounded up, as, well, this leaned to the disappointing end for me.
I accepted an offered ARC since I'd read the first book in this universe that isn't quite a series, and that one was okay, but this one was even less impressive. Beware my last couple of paragraphs as they contain a bit of a spoiler, but something I'd love for books to begin including content warnings for, honestly. Tag everything like fanfic, then there's no unpleasant surprises. Anyways.
So, Morgan is the sister of Karter, who we met in Business Not As Usual; so we know she's wealthy and fashionable and nice. She runs a nonprofit organization for youth, too, and the need to expand its space leads her to a real estate bidding war of sorts, and one of the rivals for this piece of property is Drake, her old flame from college whom she left when things got a little too real. This is more second chance romance trope than rivals to lovers.
It was certainly refreshing to have a Black lady protagonist who is not struggling with money, a nice counter point to the first book in this loose series by Cooper. The L.A. setting was refreshing for this sort of plot, too! I could totally see Lifetime or Hallmark making a movie of this. As for whether I'd watch it...Well.
The plot leaned very heavily into ludicrous, physically humorous comedy of errors vibes. One after another, ridiculous things happened - the protagonist's pants split while she's twerking, a cartoonish bar brawl breaks out while they're on a date, she wears heels to a grassy outdoors event, they stick in the mud and she needs to be carried around.
I could deal with the actually pretty low-conflict, highly silly plot, until a big thing at the end. What broke me was a sophisticated, wealthy, progressive career woman in L.A. experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and never once mentioning the option of abortion. In a modern romance in 2022, with these very rights under fire in this country, I was deeply disappointed in this character not confronting their options on-page. The character takes a test, and the text literally says becoming a parent is happening, whether she likes it or not? What? No.
Needless to say, pregnancy content is one of my absolute No-gos in romance, so what was a middling kind of book took a sharp turn into No Thanks in that last ten percent. I'd skip this one unless it definitely sounds like your thing.
Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒ In It to Win It by Sharon C. Cooper is a second-chance romance that I just loved.
Story Recap: Morgan Redford is a bit spoiled and has grown up not wanting for anything. But, she’s determined to make her own way in life. She found a cause that she’s passionate about and it’s helping children age out of the foster care program. But, in order to grow her nonprofit, she needs a building, and a friend of the family has the perfect place up for sale.
Real estate developer Drake Faulkner wants the same property. It has sentimental value to him, and his mentor is selling it, so he believes he’s a shoo-in to get the property. Drake is shocked when he learns there will be a competition for the property and he’ll be competing against his ex-girlfriend, Morgan. He was madly in love with Morgan in college, until the day she suddenly left him and left the country without a word of explanation.
My Thoughts: I loved this wonderful second-chance romance. I could understand why Morgan left the country and Drake when she was still in college. It’s not a very mature move, but Morgan wasn’t very mature at that time. She’s now grown up and much more mature and self-assured than she was back in college.
Drake is a swoon-worthy hero. He had to raise his teenage twin siblings since they were 2 years old after their parents were killed when he was in college. He was forced to become self-sufficient and responsible from a young age.
Drakes's teenage twin siblings, Aiden and Addison stole the show for me, I just loved them. I was surprised that the actual competition didn’t happen until after the halfway mark, but that was ok with me. Obviously, Drake has some hard feelings towards Morgan, but once he heard her explanation for disappearing all those years ago, he finally forgave her, he was still wary that she might leave him again.
Although this is not a series, we got to meet up with some of her characters from her previous book, Business Not as Usual, and that was fun.
Recommendation: I highly recommend In It To Win It to anyone who enjoys romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was the exact light, fun, distracting read I was expecting. I like second chance romance and most of the tropes in the story, but I’m not a huge fan of “I’m not mom material” until an oops happens. Otherwise the story wasn’t bad it was full of good humor and completely unrealistic plot lines (billionaire makes people compete physically for the chance to buy his building?). The heat in the romance did feel realistic and I liked that there was history behind their instant (re)connection. Morgan has never wanted for anything but her heart goes to the teens aging out of foster care so she and a friend started a non-profit to help them find homes and other life skills. She’s determined to expand and provide more young adults homes. Drake is excited that his mentor is selling a perfect building for his current project with an emotional connection he is determined to win. Neither one was expecting to see the other and to learn that their shattered college romance may not be as dead as they expected. I gave it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because it was the fun distraction I was hoping it would be.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️¾
My thoughts: 🔖2% Ch. 1 - My immediate thoughts are I wouldn't have been so quick to snatch this book up if I recognized the author, I would have waited for reviews, and I hate ebooks with location instead of page numbers. 🔖19% Ch. 9 - This story is trying too hard to be funny; it has its moments, but the overkill comes off corny. I think I'm enjoying it more than the last book, although I've seen this story before, so I feel like I know exactly what's going to happen. I'm only stopping because I'm hungry, so I'm switching to my audiobook. 🔖38% Ch. 17 - Now, gramps shows up with spoilers from the previous book! This should be categorized as a series. It is deviating from the norm, although I'm not buying Morgan's excuse for ghosting Drake in college. 🔖67% Ch. 28 - Make sure to take a sip of wine or bite of chocolate every time you read "... covered her mouth with his."
Identical twins don't run in families; they are completely random! This isn't an official series but it follows Business Not As Usual, the MC in this book is the sister of the LI of that book; other characters also make an appearance and the conclusion of that book continues in this one. Overall, it was okay. There was another cringey postcoital family moment. I enjoyed this story more than Business Not As Usual, but I would delay reading the next book. There was a lot of repetition, first, they were covering mouths, then they were crushing mouths, I would have just preferred kiss, I felt like she was just trying to up the word count.
Recommend to others?: Yes, but I highly recommend you read Business Not As Usual first as this book contains the ending to that story.
Morgan Redford and Drake Faulkner are vying for the same property. They are not the only candidates that are trying to win this property, and they must agree to enter into a competition in order to even qualify. While most of the people that are after the property are complete strangers, that is certainly not the case with Morgan and Drake. In fact they were together in college together and we’re desperately in love. At the time, Drake had recently been left custody to his twin siblings who were toddlers at the time. More than that, Drake could see the full picture with Morgan, marriage, family, and more. That proved to be too much for Morgan and she flew the coop, literally.
Not only did Morgan leave Drake, she left college, and she left the country. Now it is years later and they are now competitors. Those years seem like a blink of an eye to Morgan and Drake when it comes to the powerful connection they both still share. Now it is business first, feelings second. Can they do that? What about the fact that Morgan didn’t feel that she was mother material while they were in college and Drake will always put the twins first in his life?
The competition to win the property will not be easy. In fact it will be an Iron Man competition, something that is completely out of Morgan’s wheelhouse. While they decide to train together, neither one of them is prepared for the barrage of emotions that pass between them, forcing them to consider their past all while trying to navigate their present and also their future.
What an enjoyable and sensitive story by Sharon C. Cooper. In fact, when starting this book I remembered reading Business Not As Usual last year. Although these books are not part of a series, there is some continuity when it comes to some of the characters. One strong factor in this book, In It to Win It, is that attention is drawn to the plight of many teens who age out of the foster care system with nowhere to go. I love that our character, Morgan, fought for these kids. This second chance romance is definitely a winner.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
2.5 stars. This was a miss for me. Corny and predictable. Nice concept, poor execution. I skipped a lot of this book because they were so many extra words. We could’ve just gotten to the point. when I tell you I skipped from like chapter 16 to the epilogue…I’m not kidding. I just wanted to get this over with. This book really did have potential, but it was rushed. The scenarios were like the author was trying to shove different romcom moments into one book. It was annoying. I wouldn’t say the characters were annoying. They were all pretty likable. It’s just the writing seemed almost juvenile? The adultier side of juvenile? I’ll give myself some time to read another book by this author. I wish I had more helpful words, but at the moment I do not.
This book is sooo good! I love that Drake and Morgan got their second chance, and it was such a wonderful one! The twins are the absolute best, and I loved seeing Dreamy, Karter, and Gramps again! This author is definitely a fave of mine after the two books I’ve read!
Initially, I thought I was going to really like this book. I am definitely a sucker for second chance romance. While the book started off really strong, it somewhat fell flat towards the end.
The setup of the story is really great. We have young lovers who end up running into one another many years later when they are competing for a piece of property. Where the story begins to decline, for me, is the actual competition. I found myself really not caring about the book anymore and was just trying to push through the get finished. On the other hand, I can't identify what it was really missing just yet.
very bad. could also shelve as dnf, since I skimmed the later half, but I always feel bad leaving reviews where I dnf, and I wanted to see what possible problem they could fabricate. there was a whole lot of telling instead of showing ... I, like apparently everyone else in her life, do not understand why she did not pursue fashion as she does not seem to have any passion for helping people beyond saying it. lots of second hand embarrassment, overreactions, and meetings that could have been an email.
i just started this book and it took me less than three hours to finish and all i can say is DONT READ IT.
i have read fanfiction that is written better than this and i’m being so serious. the characters were fine and the plot could’ve been good but it was all just so boring and hard to take seriously. the dialogue was AWFUL. and why was the author obsessed with making the girl trip and fall so many times with her bf laughing at her like i’m TIRED!!!
anyways i am disappointed and feel like i wasted my time lol!
This book was lighthearted, funny and just what I needed for a quick read. I finished this book in a couple hours, just flew through it. I really liked Morgan’s story line and what she was trying to accomplish with Open Arms in this book, it def tugged on my heart strings as someone who at one also aged out of the foster care system and the struggles a lot of people in the system face.
I’m not normally a lover of second chance romances but this one I feel like was done the right way since 10 years has passed and they’ve both grown into new version of themselves. The competition for the property they both wanted to buy I thought was really clever and gave lots of humour to the storyline.
The chemistry between the MC was palpable, the smut could have gone up a couple degrees but I def still got those little shoots in my stomach 🔥 Also a man who loves to make a plan, sign me up 🥵
My only major complaint is I do feel it was a very quick reconnect not that it can’t happen that way but leaves room for believability. Also I would’ve loved to see more from their relationship with they were in college and the dynamic they had then VS the people they’ve become now.
Thank you @PRHAudio for the complimentary audiobook and thank you @netgalley @berkleypub @letstalkbookspromo for my digital copy! My thoughts are my own.
This second chance romance is entertaining from the very beginning, with a hilarious (and terrifying) meet-cute -involving a 𝙎𝙋𝙄𝘿𝙀𝙍 🕷️- leading to a whirlwind courtship that includes competing in a marathon! The characters in this book are all really likable and the storyline is original. I especially liked Drake’s siblings!
MORGAN is a spoiled rich girl with a not-so-spoiled attitude about helping others. There is a lot of name-dropping of expensive fashion brands but Morgan’s mission to provide for teen girls coming out of foster care is a win for me. Years ago, Morgan left her college boyfriend, Drake, when she discovered his responsibilities. Now, Morgan regrets that impulsive decision.
After the tragic deaths of his parents, a young DRAKE was left to raise his twin siblings alone. Somehow he made it through college, even surviving heartbreak when his girlfriend deserted him. Now, Drake owns a successful real estate business, but he has never forgotten Morgan. He hasn’t forgiven her either.
Morgan and Drake resolve their issues pretty quickly but they seem to have a large number of mishaps, usually involving lots of yelling and screaming, and Drake coming to the rescue. This one is also pretty steamy, which is not my personal preference!
But don’t let my preferences stop you from reading this one, especially if you enjoy second-chance romance, lively characters, insta-love, and spice!
This is a second-chance romance that finds college sweethearts Morgan and Drake reuniting in adulthood as they compete for a commercial property bid.
I wanted to like this one more, but the storyline sometimes felt a bit all over the place. The leads are literally jumping through hoops to try and win this property, which feels like a side element to their instant love re-connection. I wanted more romance build up and more 'showing' than 'telling' about their careers and interest in one another. Aiden and Addison, Drake's twin siblings, were the scene stealers when they were around.
Thank you Berkley and NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
As a romance novel, it's not that this book aroused that many emotions for me. It seemed strange and rather unconnected from the very beginning and to be precise, from the reason she left him the first time; even stranger then was the fact that he took her back as if nothing happened.... I don't know, maybe it's not my style...
A cute, fluffy satisfying easy read. Morgan and Drake were college sweethearts until one day Morgan up and left without any notice. Years later they meet again because they are both bidding for the same building. I found it to be engaging and kept me interested.
This was just very cute. I liked the characters and the second chance storyline made sense. Normally, I'm frustrated by second chance because the reason for the initial breakup is dumb. While I hated how Morgan broke up with Drake, I think it was the right call.
The competition aspect was maybe unnecessary. It was a much smaller part of the story than expected. The fact that Morgan is an incredible designer but just doesn't want to do it also felt weird. I don't know how it served the story. I liked that there was no third act breakup and the plot twist worked for me.
Morgan Redford (little sister to Karter, the venture capitalist hero of Business Not As Usual) has turned her back on pursuing a career in fashion design (to her mother's disdain) and is hustling to get a larger space for her nonprofit, Open Arms, in order to serve more young adults aging out of foster care. She's put in a bid on the perfect building, but the owner has decided to bring together all the bidders to request more than a simple monetary offer: he wants to know their purpose, because the property has sentimental value to him. And among the other bidders, Morgan is astonished to find Drake Faulkner, the man she loved -- and left -- in college.
Drake's not too impressed to find Morgan at the meeting. He's never really gotten over her unexplained disappearing act, and he doesn't really want to hear excuses. But the attraction is still there, and as they both progress through the competition together, the ties between them grow even stronger.
This second-chance romance between business rivals has a lot for the reader to appreciate. Morgan is determined from the start to be honest with Drake about her past disappearance -- a step that, even though she mishandled it, she took as an acknowledgement that she was too young and immature for a relationship at the time -- and to offer sincere apologies and attempts to prove that she has grown and matured. Drake rightfully expresses his anger and hurt but never crosses the line by inflicting pain on the woman he still loves. And as the two rekindle their romance, they learn to support each other in all ways.
Drake's twin siblings, Addison and Aiden, often steal the scene with their antics and their surprisingly sage advice. Morgan's bestie and business partner Isabella and Drake's business partner Matteo both offer cautionary advice to the reunited lovers, though Matteo nearly steps into toxic territory with some of his remarks. I'm not too impressed with how Morgan's mother still remains almost a caricature of a mean mom by the end of the book, so I felt that thread was left dangling in a very unsatisfying way. (One other nitpick: Morgan's expressed disinclination toward motherhood resolved in a somewhat unsatisfying way, too.)
Good pacing, believable development of the plot and resolution of the conflicts, entertaining cameos from characters from the first book -- overall, an enjoyable read and HEA. 3.5 stars rounded up.
Thank you, Berkley Romance and NetGalley, for providing an eARC of this book. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.
I thought this was going to be enemies to lovers territory with the way Drake was treating Morgan in the beginning, not that she didn't deserve it but it's definitely a second chance love story. In it to Win It follows Drake ad Morgan as they try to rekindle their friendship and the love that they have for each other, without giving too much away, they were college sweethearts when a decision that Morgan made resulted in them not seeing each other for years, around that time drake had a very tragic thing happen in his life which resulted in him raising his two year old twin siblings, Aiden and Addison (I love them)
The way Drake and Morgan ran into each other after so many years was both mortifying and hilarious LOL (I'll let you read about that part on your own) They both will be bidding on a building that's very important to both, for Drake it is the very first building his father ever designed so it's personal for him and for Morgan she and her bestfriend want the property so that they can have more space for their nonprofit "Open Arms" which helps young adults between the ages of 18 to 22 who have aged out of foster care. It helps with everything from securing housing, getting scholarships, and employment. The building they currently have only accommodates about twenty people and having this new property they will be able to take in more people and not have to turn them away.
Bidding on the building isn't as easy as they both believe and puts them in very interesting situations.
In it to Win it is a funny, cute and romantic story with an HEA.
Thank you to Berkley Pub for the gifted ARC in exchange for my review!
I LOVED LOVED LOVED the ease of this second chance romance between Morgan and Drake! This gave me the HEA that I was truly looking for. These two pulled it together despite past gut feelings and apprehension. I loved the way they loved each other and how protective over their relationship they both were! So happy to have had a chance to read this book! ,
USA Today bestselling author, Sharon C.Cooper has once again written another entertaining romance- comedy that presents two lovable lead characters. Drake Faulkner and Morgan Redford were college sweethearts. In this story, they are reunited after 10 years. Yes, fans 10 years! Morgan ghosted Drake and broke his heart. I’ll allow you to discover the details that led to that fiasco. The story is set in LA, where Drake and Morgan come face-to-face after a decade of no communication. First, let me say that the comedy aspects of the story are hilarious:From the TikTok dance mishap, the lasagna fail, to the grocery store meet-up, those scenes will have you laughing out loud. On the other hand, there is so much regret between Drake and Morgan- 10 years worth to be exact. It’s apparent that Morgan has a lot of explaining to do. Ms Cooper does a wonderful job of bringing some resolution to Drake and Morgan’s situation that leads to unforgettable romantic moments. Their chemistry is off-the -charts. I enjoyed the side characters who support and give unsolicited advice to the lead characters. Addison and Aiden, Drake’s twin sister and brother, are stand-out side characters. I really enjoyed catching up with Dreamy and Karter from BUSINESS NOT AS USUAL. The HEA is unforgettable! IN IT TO WIN IT is a story that I am sure you will enjoy. It is the perfect combination of charm, humor, and romance in all the right places. I highly recommend it for your reading pleasure.
I love a second chance romance! There's history and obstacles already there to overcome and a love that is still there cause it wasn't the problem.. Sometimes it's timing.
They were in love in college and it didn't work out for her and she left. So when they meet again when bidding for the same property they are surprised. Both are very invested in the property but the owner is making them and others interested pass a few tests first.
Morgan the FMC who is a skilled fashion designer but has chosen to start a non-profit for kids in the foster system that are about to age out have a safety net and resources if they aren't as adopted. This is such a great np idea and I think it's really important to care for them instead of just releasing them to possibly live on the streets.
Drake has been caring for his twin brother and sister since they were toddlers and their parents passed away. They are now teens and helping with his relationship and with funny sibling banter.
Read if you like: ✨ Second Chance Romance 👠 Physical humor (I do cause I'm constantly doing all that junk. I literally have a goose egg on my forehead from a shelf that I knew was there but hit anyways. Then I threw my phone and broke it) ✨ HEA
Thank you berkleyromance and netgalley for the e-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
