World-class biblical scholar/author Fitzmeyer has written a masterful study onPaul's Epistle to the Romans that will rival the great commentaries on Romans by Martin Luther and Karl Barth. Fitzmeyer is the author of the popular Anchor Bible commentaries on the Gospel according to Luke.
Certainly no worse than the other two commentaries by Fitzmyer I read but I didn't have it in me to rate it higher. Not so much the author's fault as the Apostle's—I really can't stand breathing "the swampy air of the Apostle Paul," to borrow Nietzsche's memorable phrase. I'm sure someone more into theology would be more gaga over this book than I.
Some Protestants avoid Catholic commentaries, and vice-versa, but I found this commentary helpful. Clear. Well-written. Serious. Scholarly, yet accessible.
Read in conjunction with a Bible study at church. Excellent balanced, and comprehensive commentary. Not much by way of an agenda. Thorough and extremely useful.
