En route back to the Union lines, undercover agent Bronwen Llyr stumbles upon a plot by Robert E. Lee to use a surprise attack to cut off the Union Army's supply line and risks everything to attempt to warn General McClellan of the impending disaster. Reprint.
Miriam Grace Monfredo, a former librarian and a historian, lives in Rochester, New York. This is the seventh Seneca Falls Mystery. A previous Seneca Falls Mystery, The Stalking-Horse, was chosen by the Voice of Youth Advocacy as one of 1998's best adult mysteries for young adults and received a "best" review in Library Journal's young adult section.
The great thing about a series as compared to a single volume is you actually don't finish a book. You finish, upon reading the series, a more complete development of the story, an almost living sense of the characters, if fictional, and a true appreciation of the genius of the author. Having just completed the three books of the Cain narrative I'm pleasantly surprised there are three more to compliment the ongoing narrative. I've already ordered the next three through Thrift Books. I mention this company because they have an extensive library, reasonable pricing, and free shipping. Miriam Grace Monfredo is a new favorite author for me.
In some ways I'm disappointed that the Seneca Falls series is over. I have thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Monfredo's creation and her characters. But this book is a fitting end to the series. We see Kathryn come into her own while she defends female nurses in the battlefield. We see Bronwen face off with her various enemies while she tries to unmask a traitor. And we finally see Glynis make up her mind between her two flamboyant suitors. I love the mention made of true events from the Civil War and the way Monfredo's characters put the reader right into the picture. Now I'm trying to find another series of books that are set during these uneasy and bloody times of this great war between the states.
HB-B @ 2002, 9/07. Civil War Trilogy. Book 3. After saving their brother from the gallows, the Llyr's work their way back to the Union lines, only to discover Lee plans a surprise attack on McClellan's troops. Very good.
I found this to be a bit of a stretch the whole way around. At times it reads like a harliquin and other times it seems to grab onto history.....only to let go. I will not recommend this book.
