Trent Parke: Minutes to Midnight

In 2003, Trent Parke began a road trip around his native Australia, a monumental journey that was to last two years and cover a distance of over 90.000 km. Minutes to Midnight is the ambitious photographic record of that adventure, in which Parke presents a proud but uneasy nation struggling to craft its identity from different cultures and traditions. Minutes to Midnight merges traditional documentary techniques and imagination to create a dark visual narrative portraying Australia with a mix of nostalgia, romanticism and brooding realism. This is not a record of the physical landscape but of an emotional one. It is a story of human anxiety and intensity which, although told from Australia, represents a universal human condition in the world today.

El libro que yo he leído no va del reportaje fotográfico que Trent Parke hizo durante dos años en su roadtrip por Australia. Hay un pequeño recorte de prensa en la primera página que habla de una misteriosa luz que pudo avistarse en algún lugar de Australia en junio de 2010 durante la noche. Los testigos, los de la misteriosa luz de la que habla el artículo de prensa, no saben de dónde provenía, y “la portavoz de Defensa asegura que no tiene explicación". Empiezo desde el principio. El libro de Trent Parke que yo he leído va de lo que sucedió después de aquélla misteriosa luz. Ese texto, y sobre todo el acontecimiento del que habla, me predispone -me sugestiona- a construír mi propia historia catastrófica y misteriosa, y a interpretar sus fotos como un reportaje documental postapocalíptico de todo lo que sucedió después. Y de repente todas las imágenes tienen sentido. Hablan entre ellas. Se hacen poderosas unas a otras. Ese trabajo de edición gráfica, esa decisión creativa que juega con mi interpretación, con mi entendimiento, con la forma en la que lo falso se vuelve verosímil, a través de una premisa, de un artificio, de una simple luz misteriosa, me parece realmente fascinante.
