I’m finding the year this was originally released showing 2002, not 2011. I read the book back then but I’ve sure forgotten what a sick, twisted killer this guy was. A major con man as well. A creepy but enlightening read that kept me up into the wee hours. A bit repetitive or it would have been 5 stars. Enjoy this writer's true crime books.
Interesting read. I think I have read this book back in 2001/2002 but if I did I did not remember anything and a story like this a normal person would never forget so a: I am not a normal person or b: I did never read it. Must be A.
It was an interesting case and well written. This guy was so controlling and they let him control everything which annoyed me. I will not write any more so not to spoil it. I had to skip the prologue and chapter 1. Reading the first sentence of chapter 1 it gave me the killer and a victim so if you read this and are like me begin with chapter 2 and go back to 1 later on.
This is a very disturbing book in that this lowlife POS was charming enough that women trusted him past the point of no return.
The book was somewhat repetitive, but the story was thoroughly covered. I had no sympathy for this murdering creature despite all his self-deprecating posturing and pleading for understanding. The murders were unusually vicious and heinous and impacted many lives. If there is any justice in the world, this self-important little man will never again see daylight.
Do you get the feeling that I didn't like William Lee "Cody" Neal?
I have no idea how this pig was able to deceive so many women. He was not attractive at all but must have been a very smooth talker. Author did a great job on presenting this case in a way that will keep he reader's attention.
An in-depth look at three horrible crimes and the deviant con man who committed them. How an otherwise unremarkable smooth talker charmed 3 intelligent, loving women to their deaths in as he chillingly described it"his mortuary". Wild Bill Cody Neal ,as he liked to be called strutted around dressed in cowboy garb , black Stetson, tight jeans, black shirt and black duster throwing money around ,charming vulnerable women with his aw shucks ma'am manner. He was too good to be true..he plied them with flowers, limousine rides to the best restaurants in town..manly tears when he spoke of his Mother or daughter..he knew just what to say ,just how to pour on the gallant charm. ..But behind the gallantry and charm lurked a con man a self avowed "stinkin' liar" who could bash his victims skulls to bits with a 7 # maul and coolly grab up her dropped cigarette and finish smoking it while sitting in a chair looking at his handy work. This book is a gripping, horrifying page-Turner..that kept me reading from page one to the end. The author,Steve Jackson,is on a par with the well-known author,Ann Rule.
He wasn't handsome and told some pretty tall stories yet women would still fall for this polite, mind boggling pathological liar and sociopath. It was amazing how the women trusted him even to duct tape them to a chair for a "surprise". This was a good read though some parts of the story seemed to repeat itself but if you can get past that it's worth your time.
A grueling account of a serial killer's malicious acts. Revenge or sure madness? The victims, the offender and the officials who had the dire duty to apprehend are well described. Those who were involved in convicting this most deviant human had to endure the snare like atmosphere as they eeked out confirming evidence from the 'Wild Bill Cody" Neal. Engaged throughout the book, one can only wonder if they ran into this guy what they might do. Who can really understand or comprehend the sick, evil nature of another human being? This story gets you close to the killer's mind....at times too close. A chilling account. Rest in peace the souls of the underserving victims. Women beware of charming men.
A bizarre and very sad story about what happened to these women from this despicable man. Author writes with much research without getting bogged down with unnecessary details. There was some repetition but I just scanned over it. First time reading this author but not the last.
Twisted Story Of A Pathological Liar And Sociopath Steve Jackson has done it again with this book Love Me to Death. The book is about one very sick pathological liar and sociopath called William Lee Neal, or "Cody". Cody is a very smooth talker and liked to be called Wild Bill Cody Neal who would strut around town dressed in cowboy outfits wearing black Stetson, tight jeans, a black shirt, and a black duster. Cody would throw money around and would come across as very charming, confident extravagant man, who knew exactly what to say and which buttons to press when he met vulnerable women. Cody would pay so much attention to the women and lavish them with fancy expensive flowers, limousine’s meals, and gifts but sadly this is all a facade. Cody is a con man who gets his money by getting vulnerable women to loan him money. First, he would ask for a small loan, and when he would pay it back a few days later he would then ask to borrow a bigger loan shortly after promising his victims it was just to tied him over. He would also promise that they were both investing in a scheme with great return, and they would both become very rich once the investment matured. Sadly, as Cody always seemed to have money and lived a lavish lifestyle women believed him. Cody picked three intelligent, and loving women whom he is supposed to be going out with and murders each one with an axe in in the house he chillingly described as “his mortuary “after taking all their money. Cody kills them all within days of each other and he binds and rapes a fourth victim who sadly had to witness the murder of her friend.
I found This book to be well written and holds the reader’s attention from the first page. A truly gripping, and horrifying story. Thanks to WildBlue Press I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Detailed account of women duped into their own murders by Charles Manson like manipulator. A long ride for a baloney sandwich. I don't know what is more amazing Beals audacity or his victims gullibility.
The first half of the book was interesting, although pretty graphic and grisly. The second half was word for word testimony that was mostly repetition. This is the case of William Lee "Cody" Neal, who murdered 3 women and kidnapped and raped several others.
I thought this book was pretty good. Well written and easy to follow. First true crime book that I've read where the defendant represented himself in court. Pretty interesting how it works.
Steve Jackson summarizes the true real crime story of William Lee “Cody” Neal, in Love Me to Death in Denver Colorado. Neal is now known as the Denver state Lady-Killer. Jackson interviewed those such as police officers, family members, and “Cody” Neal himself to bring forth Neal’s homicides, rape, and kidnapping. Jackson covers Neal’s timeline from his childhood to his last rape, murder, surrender to police, to correspondence from Neal from prison. Many details are covered from insignificant to major. The audience for this book are those interested in biographies, true crime thrillers and true crime documentaries ranging from enthusiastic readers to psychologists. Someone of these backgrounds would benefit from this book as it delves deep into the mind of a serial killer and the why’s behind his actions. Love Me to Death displays truth, rawness, suspenseful, and evidence of events all aspects of great creative nonfiction. This book captivates its readers with real life recounts from his family and ex-wives. You are able to see from the front row just how Wild Cody Neal turned on and off his charm with these woman and turned them off behind closed doors. Jackson writes “"Welcome To My Mortuary!" Those were the words of William Lee "Cody" Neal, 43, to Angela Fite on July 5, 1998, after luring the pretty 28-year-old to the Denver, Colorado townhouse he'd turned into a den of torture and slaughter. With twisted pleasure, he showed her two dead female bodies on the floor and a third, live one--naked, gagged and bound, and spread-eagled on a mattress” and then about the confession of William Lee Neal, “Neal cautioned the investigators that he might not be able to remember everything, not because I'm hiding something it's just the act, I mean the whole scene is such a nightmare to me as well. Zimmerman asked him to try to remember the day at least from when he’d picked up Suzanne Scott. Neal described again how he'd asked her to go with him to the townhouse on the pretense of showing her a surprise for Beth Weeks”.
Similar works are “If You Tell” by Gregg Olson, “The Pale Faced Lie” by David Crow, “Home Sweet Murder” by James Patterson, “Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder Case” by Charles Bosworth Jr. and Joel Schwartz. This book will keep you entangled wanting more just as the women that William Lee “Cody” Neal, the Denver state Lady Killer entangled his victims with his charm. This novel contributes real accounts to serial killers and documents the physiological warfare of manipulation.
Steve Jackson writes about serial killer William “Wild Bill Cody” Neal in Love me to Death: The Chilling True Story of William “Wild Bill Cody” Neal—The Vicious Denver Lady-Killer. I am a fan of true crime stories. This is the first book written by this author that I've read. One thing I learned from reading the horrifying events that trailed Neal's fury is to beware of the charmer! He doesn't have to be handsome or smart, but a perfect conman is charming, and can fit into any situation. But even with the charming man, there is always a piece that seems "off." Neal graduated from abusing his four wives, lying and stealing their money, to rape, kidnapping, and murder. Something he was very proud of. Reading the accounts of each of the survivors and the victims, that were killed, butchered, is something that is incomprehensible. Yet, there were survivors. They probably never really knew how lucky they were to survive, and get rid Neal out of their lives, until the truth of the brutality of the kills came out. Neal thought he was better than Bundy. This book was written very well. It was detailed and terrifying, especially because Neal liked the sneak attacks, and his personality was all over the place, so even when everyone knew he was a liar, they didn't realize how much evil lurked inside this wannabe "cowboy." Love me to Death is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. I look forward to reading many more titles by this author. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.
Evil - pure evil. William Lee "Cody" Neal was one very sadistic killer - one who used women to get what he wanted - and then killed them. While he seemed to start killing out of nowhere, there is a thought that he may have been killing long before he was caught - there is just no proof.
Cody Neal used his looks, and the money that he was scamming out of women to lure other women to him. When pressed to pay back his loans, he would turn to murder, keeping a sort of mortuary in his home - which would have horrified anyone that saw it.
This case, was interesting in many ways, as Cody Neal seemed to be very bright. But instead of using his brains for good, he turned to crime instead. Great read! I enjoyed this one!
This book was a difficult read. Not just because of the brutal crimes it discusses but the actual writing wasn’t the best. The same information was repeated over and over. I skimmed a lot of the filler info and repeated info because it became tedious to read. The book started strong and drew me in, which is why I pushed to finish it. The author did a good job of showing that “Cody” is a disgusting human and is one of the few who make me question my stance as anti death penalty. It’s clear that “Cody” is a manipulative liar who would do anything to save himself.
I would describe this as a no-frills true crime account. It does not pull its punches, just describes events in stark detail. Having said that, the author does infect this (frankly refreshing) petri dish view with their own thoughts and views in places. It is also not for every reader, the shock factor is too high, and the pared down view is not for everyone, hence my 3 stars. Personally I thought this was a great account of the Denver Lady Killer, a little known serial killer.
is the first word of many that come to mind to describe the behavior of Neal. Wild Bill, Ted Bundy? Really! That's who he most identified himself with, what a loser. And as far as the women he conned, to even hint at blame towards them by some, is worse than Neal. And that's pretty bad, to say the least.
Never heard about this case, but it isn't hard to believe that someone could be that manipulative. Most people in this world have come up against someone who knows the right word to say, the right buttons to push to get you to believe. Well written piece. Anyone going into a new relationship should pay attention to.
This book is really a cautionary tale of how women should be leary of men who shower them with gifts and money and make fantastic promises to them. I highly recommend it to other true crime readers.
As a local resident of SW Denver, the writer’s descriptions of familiar places was haunting. This is a cautionary tale of the evil that walks amongst us
I usually really like true-crime books, but I couldn't get into this one. The writing was not very good and it seemed the time line skipped around. But, the guy in this book is one scum bag and you definitely get the feel of that.
Well told story. I think it’s important to have background information about the victims and there was just enough to have an understanding of their frame of mind when getting caught up with Cody.
What a great book. Very smart , professional women who fell for a smooth talking charmer who turn out to be a cold, calculating, ruthless killer. Women beware of wolfs in sheep’s clothing !
A real page turner. Another great well researched book by one of my favourite authors. This book was extremely interesting and highly recommended. There couldn't be a more deserving person put forward to receive the death penalty than Bill Cody Neal.
Steve Jackson always tells a good story. In this one, there is some evidence of a cause of otherwise boot sensible crimes. It is worth your time of you are a fan.
