Three homeless and rootless Civil War veterans strike out for Texas where they start the Circle Three Bar, a sweeping cattle ranch that comes to dominate their lives and the lives of their descendants.
This was a terrible book. I am glad to be done with it. None of the characters felt like real people. They had no consistent personality, so I didn't care what happened to them. The animal abuse was disgusting. The racism toward Mexicans and then stealing their culture was disgusting. The sexism was disgusting. Rose Ellen is 'not like other girls' and every other woman in the story (besides Donnie's love interest, of course) is either villainous or barely mentioned. Ray Newsome is a disgusting creep. Poor Orrin is basically a plot device. We're supposed to be impressed, I guess, but everyone in this story is just stupid and selfish and cruel.
I have read this book multiple times and have loved it every time. The multi-generational, fixed geographic location reminds me of a James Michener novel. It’s a story of three Civil War soldiers became partners in a Texas ranch and how the decisions of one generation impact the fates of future generations.
I loved the story of 3 men starting out fresh after serving in a war. Authentic characters and a meaningful storyline made for a very enjoyable western read.
