Toshi Ichiyanagi (Japanese: 一柳 慧) was a pioneering Japanese avant-garde composer and pianist known for blending Western classical music with traditional Japanese instruments. A prominent figure in Japan’s postwar music scene, he studied under Tomojirō Ikenouchi and John Cage and spent time in New York City, where he attended Juilliard and The New School. Ichiyanagi’s early works often featured experimental techniques such as graphic notation, chance music, and nontraditional scoring. Notable compositions include “Sapporo” and “Kaiki,” which combined Western and Japanese instruments. He was a co-founder of the avant-garde collective New Direction. Later in his career, his style evolved toward more conventional orchestral and operatic works. Ichiyanagi received major awards including the Suntory Music Award and the John Cage Award, and was honored with Japan’s Order of Culture. He was briefly married to artist Yoko Ono. Ichiyanagi’s extensive catalog spans operas, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, electronic compositions, and film scores. His innovative approach influenced contemporary Japanese music by bridging experimental and traditional styles. He passed away in 2022 at age 89, leaving a lasting legacy as a central figure in Japan’s avant-garde music movement.
