A blocked writer looking for inspiration Kaylee I write about bad men who do dirty things to needy women. Or I used to. I'm on a deadline and the words aren't coming. My creative well is nothing more than a mud puddle. Perhaps a reflection of my equally uninspiring life. But then I encounter a smoking man with a serious book habit at my local library. Suddenly, he's my hero. I'm writing about a gorgeous bespectacled guy with lickable abs and bitable biceps. The words are flowing, but it's not the book I meant to write. Not enough handcuffs, too many teeth and claws...and I'm not entirely sure why. A nerdy dragon looking for love Dex I found her. My one true mate. And... She thinks I'm a lunatic. "Dragons aren't real." I just have to convince a woman with an imagination so vast she creates fictional worlds for a living that everything she's ever dreamt is real, magic included. No problem. Without revealing my true form. More complicated. While keeping her safe. Dammit. Note from the This book contains a practical writer who's certain that dreams and magic are for children, and that happily-ever-after only exists in fiction. It also contains a badass nerd dragon who's ready for love...until he meets the woman of his dreams and realizes life with him is full of unavoidable dangers.
Gemma Cates writes flirty paranormal, fantasy, and alien romances with plenty of the steamy stuff and a solid dash of humor. If you’re looking for hot otherworldly fun and laughter, she’s happy to oblige.
When Gemma’s not cooking up new happily-ever-afters for her fanged and clawed heroes and heroines, she might be writing books in other, sweeter genres. (She’ll never tell.)

Warning! Gemma’s books contain steamy vampire-human and shifter-human shenanigans and enough naughty words to make someone (not her) blush.
What an absolutely adorable romance! I love how the characters are so quirky and caring. It was heartwarming to see how they embraced each other’s differences, no matter their personal beliefs. I love how the relationships evolved throughout the story, and the many revelations that we got to experience. The author did a fantastic job keeping the action and intensity high, and I can’t wait to read what’s happening next!
I started this book just based on the title alone. I'm fine with shifter books, but I am not a fan of magic, faeries, witches, demons, etc but I didn't dock stars because of that.
The writing style was great - lots of internal monologues and there were even some laugh-out-loud moments. However, I found the book was mostly internal monologues and minimal actual character interaction. Rather than having the actual interaction between Kaylee and her dad, an interaction I would think would be an integral piece of the plot, it was glossed over and briefly summarized.
Also, why was her magic suddenly getting more powerful? There wasn't an explanation there. It just...was. Why?
I liked this book much better than the last one. It’s a bit of a slow burn, I loved both Dex and Kaylee.
Kaylee is a romance novelist. She’s discovered her new muse while working in the local library. The problem is she’s too shy to approach him in real life. But oh the dreams and fantasies she’s had are enough to leave her wanting more, and to send her writing into overdrive. Dex has a problem. For some unexplained reason, he can’t shift into his dragon. His magic has somehow been bound. He’s starting to age. A few gray hairs, sore muscles after a workout and he needs reading glasses. So he’s buried himself in research at the library. When Kaylee starts seeing things that shouldn’t be possible, she’s afraid that her problems from childhood are returning. She’s had years of therapy to separate reality from fantasy. Fortunately her neighbor has answers for her and her new friend Taylor (from the first book) is shedding some light on what she’s seeing. I really like these characters. Kaylee was a bit naive at times, but as she learns more about her past and finally meets her long lost mother, she starts seeing things in a whole new light. It doesn’t take her long to realize that there was never anything wrong with her, just secrets that kept her in the dark. Dex was a sweetheart. He was incredibly patient with Kaylee. A fierce warrior who loved to bake. All of his meditation and breathing exercises and his dog, helped keep his temper in check. His magic being bound forced him to find other ways to deal with his problems. Look at things differently. Dual points of view No cheating Very low drama HEA One personal note, I really dislike when the cover of the book does not match the story. Dex is described as a hot, nerdy lumberjack. A big guy with a bread.
I liked the plot and characters but the drama and emotions just felt a bit muted to me which really shouldn't happen in a dual first person story since you're literally in their head experiencing their thoughts, emotions and reactions right along with them. Like at once point she gets kidnapped and it all felt very calm and blazee I had zero concern or anticipation about her safety. That sort of scene should have been very edge of your seat and it just... wasn't. I feel like these characters didn't even know each other when they're announcing love. And a lot of things that the story really would have benefited from showing were instead told, summarized in scenes that happened off page.
The bones are there good characters, good plot idea but Cates isn't delving deep enough into the action or emotions to reach her idea's full potential.
Dex is the hottest nerd you will ever meet. Bound and lurking the library for clues. Kaylee is the author you want to read. Love stories abound about this nerdy man in the library she has turned into a dragon in her books but no no to magic dragons? These two will circle each other, with the help of a busybody Love Witch, until they implode. This is a real fun read and you will find yourself cheering Dex on, thanking your neighborhood Witch and yelling at Kaylee to get it together.
Found this book in my library. Not sure when I got it but it was really cute. A bit of angst on both sides but luckily not too much. I liked the characters but got a little lost because this is book 2 and I didn't read the first one. Parts probably would've made more sense if I had read the books in order. Will definitely read the others.
If you enjoyed the first you'll like this one too! Along with the main plot there's more world building and connecting to characters that I'm curious if thehalready have books or will in the future.
Another good story of a dragon finding his mate. Kaylee is a romance author, and is new to Austin. Dex is a dragon who has lost his power to change forms.
The two need to help each other, and you need to read to watch them figure things out.
Great characters that interact with each other beautiful. Best read in order so you get to know the characters. Fun paranormal romance. I highly recommend.
