Painted Love is part of the ‘Pride Pet Play 2023’ collection written by various authors. This stars Cas, an artist, Mouse, a writer, and Garrett aka Daddy G, a firefighter. This is told in third person from Cas, Mouse, and Garrett’s povs.
The blurb does a brief rundown of the plot. You’ve got Mouse and Daddy G looking for a third for their relationship, and Cas looking for a Daddy who will accept him as he is. He doesn’t have much confidence in his ferret suit because he made it by hand from pieced together fabric. But Mouse and Daddy G don’t mind. Garrett is happy that Cas respects the rules Garrett set up for the first time they play together at the munch. They all get along and exchange phone numbers agreeing to meet up again.
This is a fluffy romance, with some suspense added in about an arsonist. I thought the author did a good job at creating a plot that was interesting. Most Daddy/pet stories I’ve read, are much simpler with lots of sex and little relationship building. For me, I thought the author had the characters decide they wanted to become a trouple too quickly. I think it was after the second date and Garrett was already focused on making the relationship exclusive. From there it was Mouse and Cas learning about each other, lots of sex between different couples, and the arsonist story for the final conflict. I did feel that there were too many sex scenes. A couple could’ve been left out and the story would still have worked fine.
The quibbles I had were that sometimes there was too much description which led to too much monologue. And for some reason, the scenes didn’t aways flow smoothly into the next one. It’s like the author got caught up in the description or dialogue and then when they switched gears, they just jumped to the next scene without a transition. This created a slight jerky sensation when reading at times. I haven’t read many books by this author, this is probably only the second one, so I don’t know if this is their usual style of writing or if they’ve improved. The style is not enough for me to stop reading this author. Also, there was no discussion about using condoms. They just went bare the first time without talking about it. None of them used condoms the whole time.
As to the characters, they did seem to have the same voice, especially Cas and Mouse. Their behaviors were different while in their pet forms, but sometimes I was confused with who was speaking. Garrett’s voice seemed to fluctuate a little, from rough to almost the same as Cas and Mouse’s.
Overall, I liked Painted Love. It had a more interesting plot than most of the Daddy/pet stories I’ve read. I liked the characters and could believe they made a good trouple. The voices could’ve been more distinct between all the characters, and the scene changes could’ve been smoother. I give this book, 3 Stars.
