A novel about change and growth and ways we grow and move forward after a loss, either a person, a relationship or a job.
Liz is dedicated to her job, although abrasive and, while essential to the company, not easy to get along with and not well liked. She ends up taking an extended leave of absence from her job and travelling east to meet up with her younger brother, Merle. There she finds some resolution to her situation.
Isabella is on the cusp of adulthood but doesn’t have any firm plans for her future, much to the disappointment of her father. When denied permission to go to a party out at Elkwater, she decides to go anyway and try hitchhiking. Merle rescues her on the side of the highway and she ends up tagging along with him.
Merle is a lost soul. Stuck in a relationship he never wanted and a job he will likely lose, he makes the rash decision to leave it all with no belongings, notice or goodbyes. He decides to head to Moose Jaw, picking up a couple of travel companions on the way. His plan is to check in with an old friend and mentor of his, Erwin, but the group ends up remaining with Erwin for the summer and into the early fall, a time that will change them all.
