A fantastic overview of someone i knew very little about but having picked up this book at his exhibition very recently I was hugely impressed, it’s a quick read but the incredibly generous and high quality images of his art work are a stand out for me.
Rembrandt clearly understood his ability and talent. Unfortunately, his contemporaries did not, which led to his sad downfall. Still, his works stand as majestic and profound with details. This book capsulated his life's work and story with depth suitable for readers who are new to art. It carefully chronicles each art work and location with annotation on the period of life when Rembrandt painted it. It opened for me the door to understand as much as I can, the man behind the paintings. Rembrandt is truly a gem to mankind.
This is one of those books with a short introductory essay followed by a series of full-page illustrations accompanied by facing-page blurbs. Image quality is fine but the book is a smallish paperback, so the photos are not large. This is a decent intro if you really know nothing about the artist, but I thought the descriptions of the plates were dull and even repetitive, something you'd think the author could avoid in such a brief treatment and with a subject as complex and fascinating as Rembrandt.
The writing was succinct without lacking in detail, documenting both his life and proceeding onto an analysis of his paintings that clearly serves as a celebration of his masterful oeuvre. A short but sweet read- I can see why this is my uncle's favourite artist.
This book provides a walk-through of Rembrandt's major works, connecting each painting with his life and his development as an artist. I found it to be an excellent introductory book to the art and the world of Rembrandt, as the descriptions are carefully curated.
This is the first non-fiction art book I've read. I'm giving it 4 because I liked it, could understand the criticism of the art, and would like to read about more artists.
