About the author

Laura Restrepo is a Colombian writer. Her first fiction novel, Isle of Passion, is based on historical facts from Clipperton Island.

She is an award winning author. In 1997, she won the "Premio Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz" prize at the Guadalajara Book Fair for her novel The Angel of Galilea. In 2002 she won the "Premio Arzobispo San Clemente" Award for her novel Leopard in the Sun. In 2004 she won the "VII Premio Alfaguara de Novella" Prize for Delirium. She also won the "Grinzane Cavour" Prize in Italy for best foreign fiction in 2006. In 2007 it was the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Her novel Dulce Compañía won the "Prix France Culture" in France.

As some of you know I have fallen madly in love with the literary works of Ms. Laura Restrepo.

All of her works have been five star reading experiences and this one continues the majesty of her imagination, the depth of her artistry and the sincerity of her visions.

A female journalist in Bogota explores spirituality, sensuality and the connections with Divinity after encounters with a beautiful youth of angelic countenance and actions along with an assortment of unusual female guardians and a devoted younger brother. This deeply moving story is steeped in Colombian culture, Roman Catholicism, feminism, psychoanalysis and social justice. The narrative is beautifully written and the revelations could have been written by one of the authors of the New Testament. The novel is daring, deep and if you allow the process connects one to the wonder of the spiritual in everyday living.

Laura Restrepo está por convertirse en mi pluma colombiana favorita, a punto de desbancar a Faciolince.

Si Delirio ya me había gustado porque es una obra compleja, impecablemente escrita y producto de su madurez como escritora, Dulce compañía ha causado en mí mayor fascinación. Pese a tratarse de un trabajo publicado nueve años antes, con defectos más notorios y menor calidad que Delirio, prefiero esta breve novela. Quizás porque es una obra menos sesuda y más fluida, con un ritmo juguetón y unos toques de humor de los que Delirio carece, apenas hay un atisbo de ese humor en el personaje del Midas.

Además de escritora, Restrepo es periodista, y en las páginas de Dulce compañía es más notorio. La narradora ejerce esta profesión y debe cubrir una noticia. Una periodista que es puro corazón: toma partido en las guerras que cubre, adopta damnificados y se enamora de ángeles. La objetividad no es su fuerte y es lo que la hace más interesante.

Desde la voz de la periodista, a quien llaman La Monita, conoceremos a Galilea, el barrio en el que aparece el ángel. El lector va oscilando entre suscribirse a la religiosidad popular que cunde el barrio y creer que realmente es un ángel, o elegir las explicaciones racionales y médicas, asumiendo que se trata de un enfermo mental. La Monita no se lo piensa mucho y toma posición rápidamente comprometiéndose con su causa.

Desde su mirada, personal y periodística, iremos conociendo el escenario que no es otro que un barrio colombiano popular con sus personajes singulares, situaciones macondianas y miserias. Las descripciones de Restrepo son ingeniosas, su estilo en este libro tiene un toque original y divertido. Completamente recomendado.

And this beautiful quotation from Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the cover of my book was my North Star as I began this book by Laura Restrepo, suspending all belief and trusting the author as the tale of the barrio angel sprang from the pages with all the color and complexities of Latin America. We accompanied a journalistic reporter from Bogata as the complex narrative concerning the appearance of an angel in a barrio and mountain top outside the city of Bogota, as the resulting consequences began to unfold. This is a story deeply rooted in the religious and social traditions of the author’s native Colombia. Although La Monita spares no effort to determine the phenomenon surrounding this barrio angel and an explanation, albeit epilepsy or drug abuse or superstition. But as she searches for reasons, one can see that perhaps it is a need of the people for angels and something far greater in which to believe. This tale is one of trust, intuition, imagination, faith and humor. And truly an interesting journey as I retrieved another forgotten book from my library.

Mona, a reporter for a Colombian tabloid, is sent to the poor mountainous neighborhood of Galilea on the outskirts of Bogota. She is to write a story about an angel who has attracted a devoted following. The angel is a handsome young man who speaks only in foreign tongues, and has a luminous charismatic quality about him. Mona falls deeply in love with him. His mother claims that the angel uses her as a psychic channel, and she has journals filled with his thoughts.

The village is composed of two groups--those that believe in the angel and another group, led by the priest, who think he is a fraud or demon. Mona persues the story of the angel's early life and finds he had a horrific childhood. But he possesses a personal magnetism that offers the poor residents of Galilea something to believe in. Is he an angel, or mentally ill, or both? Full of Latin American magical realism and superstition, this story does not give us an answer. Occasionally, it veers into a humorous or silly vein. The reader justs needs to suspend reality, and go along for an unusual ride.

La novela iba muy bien, hasta poco antes de la mitad: un lenguaje simpático y ameno, un costumbrismo muy fiel a lo que es la realidad de muchos barrios pobres de Colombia y Latinoamérica, muchos comentarios graciosos que en realidad me hicieron reír... hasta que empezó a introducirse el componente mágico, religioso, romántico, empalagoso...
De repente empezó a cambiar la voz de la misma protagonista, quien narra en primera persona, y sentí que de un momento a otro estaba leyendo otra novela diferente.

Y no es que tenga nada en contra de lo fantástico, lo romántico ni lo alegórico, pero sencillamente a partir de ahí no pude conectar ni con el ángel, ni con la protagonista, ni con la forma en que todo se fue narrando. Tuve que dejar de leer, porque por mucho que lo intentaba no me convencía que todo cambiara tan de repente, incluido el mismo lenguaje de la protagonista.

La deliciosa habilidad narrativa de Laura Restrepo puesta al servicio de una historia mística y teñida de dolor, eso sí, contada sin patetismo, más bien con el sentido del humor que la caracteriza. Una periodista es enviada a cubrir la gran noticia del día: Un ángel ha aparecido en uno de los barrios mas humildes de Bogotá. El trabajo de investigación llevará a la protagonista a descubrir dolorosos secretos, personajes imposibles y..a alguien que no podrá olvidar.

Un inicio intrigante y un desarrollo mediocre que culmina en un simple "meh".
La historia es interesante, y propone diferentes interpretaciones acerca de lo que realmente es este ángel que aparece milagrosamente en un barrio pobre de Bogotá. ¿Es un producto de la ignorancia? ¿Es realmente un ser místico?
La propuesta es interesante, pero el desarrollo se queda flojo; los personajes, por más particulares que sean, carecen de interés. Con una idea más clara la autora pudo haber conseguido algo mejor.
Por cierto, Isabel Allende (y algunas reseñas de Goodreads) destacan el humor de esta obra. Pues me perdí completamente de eso, porque en ninguna página detecté la más mínima dosis de humor. Tal vez soy demasiado viejo para mis 19 años.
Laura Restrepo tiene un estilo interesante, y quiero leer su obra Delirio, que es la más famosa. Espero no me decepcione.

An insanely interesting and unconventional book. It perfectly shows how seemingly normal or casual events can have an impact on/change your life, and leaves the reader behind overthinking whether it makes sense to believe in the legends or tellings we know.


A brief summary:
A young journalist is sent to a slum in Bogotá because an angel is said to have appeared there. She finds the said divine being among the poorest of the poor and is quickly pulled into a tangle of strange yet deeply emotional events that end up changing her life for good.


I really enjoyed the writing in this book. It's easy and funny, but also not too casual, the perfect mixture for a book like this.

Another thing I genuinely enjoyed was the way the village life and its residents are portrayed. One can tell the author grew up in the village herself and that she tries to give the reader a peek into that lifestyle.

'Oriphiel is just one of his masks. He does not reveal his actual name. Always distrust angels who tell you their name.' "

Die fünf Punkte sind vielleicht einer zuviel, aber es ist eben eines meiner Lieblingsbücher geworden. Eine Reporterin aus der Großstadt in Kolumbien fährt zu einer Höhle aufs Land, wo sich laut Einheimischen ein Engel aufhalten soll. Dort irrt in der Tat ein junger, schöner Mann umher, der altaramäische Sätze von sich gibt. Er wirkt verwirrt. Ist er nun ein "Engel" oder ist er nur ein Entführungsopfer, dem Drogen und andere schlimme Erfahrungen den Verstand gekostet haben. Die einheimischen Frauen verehren und versorgen ihn. Auch die Reporterin gerät in den Bann dieses seltsamen Jünglings. Die Behörden werden natürlich auch auf ihn aufmerksam und die Ereignisse spitzen sich dramatisch zu. Wie Restrepo die Ambiguität zwischen rationaler und übernatürlicher Erklärung und damit die Spannung hält ist meisterhaft. Ein Beispiel dafür, dass diese klassische Form der Fantastik auch in der Gegenwart noch funktioniert. Ich war einfach intellektuell fasziniert und emotional angerührt.

A inceput atat de bine, mi-a placut stilul Laurei Restrepo, m-am amuzat la alegerea cuvintelor si la comparatiile folosite, am apreciat urma de realism si ratiune de care personajul principal parea sa dea dovada, pana cand a dat-o in telenovela, intr-un realism magic, cica, unul foarte tras de par. O reportera e trimisa sa scrie un articol despre un inger din mahala, si cand, dupa cateva peripetii, in sfarsit in gaseste, se si indragosteste de el tam-nesam, desi pare un copil. Dupa care, cand il intalneste a doua oara, pare un barbat. Pentru ca-i telenovela, ajunge sa ii fie predestinata, ramane gravida si el se dovedeste a fi de fapt bolnav de epilepsie, schizofrenic si un pic autist. Boring.

I thought it was ridiculous, scatter-brained, and just not plausible or believable. Could have been written much better, and at a higher level with a keener sense of purpose and direction. Might be that things got lost in translation, but I don't think so. I've read enough translations to know that the original must have been equally unintelligent. If you like bad writing like Eat Pray Love, you might like this.

Lo terminé porque se lee rápido pero que poco deja! La protagonista es una periodista que, como no podía ser de otra manera, se enamora en 10 segundos del objeto de su investigación. La novela tiene un nivel de absurdismo que bordea lo ridículo, repleta de lugares comunes y con un personaje principal muy desdibujado y con sesgos rancios. Los insertos del cuaderno del angel sobran completamente.

Religious faith is a funny thing because it can be very strong despite there not being any empirical proof. Angels exist? Can you prove it? For the poor, God/religion is the only resort because although they may lack higher education, they aren’t naïve enough to believe that the government will significantly improve their lot in life, and they aren’t ashamed to show their blind faith in something they can neither see nor prove exist, or at least convince someone more “rational” who hastens to dismiss their beliefs. (This may be why UFO’s and saints only appear to the poor and “uneducated”; anyone else might be ashamed to admit seeing them. And miracles? There must be a “rational” explanation somewhere.)

Which leads me to this book by the Colombian writer, Laura Restrepo, and the overused fallback label for this type of Latin-American literature, “magical realism”; I no longer know what that means but I saw this as a satire on those who benefit by what they believe and those who try to benefit from those who believe. The story is told by reporter who had high aspirations when she began her career in journalism but instead has to make her living writing for a sensationalist supermarket magazine. Inevitably, as a woman, she is sent to interview the beauty pageant contestants, something she hates to the point where she’ll either do damage or puke if she has to listen to one more tall blonde talk about her aspirations for world peace or whatever – but she has to eat. Then one day, the editor tells her that he’s heard from his sister’s maid about an angel in a remote, dirt-poor Bogotá neighborhood and send her to investigate. (Some information here: the book mentions that there are more saints in Colombia per square kilometer than anywhere else, and that’s probably true; when the book was written in 1997, beauty pageants and miraculous religious events were still big news items; there’s another joke here about the poorest neighborhoods always having religious names, such as Galilea/Galilee, or the Brazilian film which takes place in a favela, “City of God”; finally, the cab driver who took the journalist to Galilea had never heard of it, needed to call twice for directions, and wasn’t able to take her all the way because the way was too steep and unpaved.) What she encounters is a world apart, where everyone just takes the presence of the angel – the most beautiful man the journalist has ever seen - as just a part of their community, from his mother to the priest to the acolytes; but while not all accept or want him; he is unconsciously made into an instrument for their purposes. In this, I saw a definite parallel to other places, such as Lourdes, where religious experiences are business, and places where the presence of another holy figure could be a threat to current religious authority - unless a way can be found to make him/her useful, and this doesn’t always mean for religion. At the time that this book was written, the Colombian government was battling FARC and other revolutionary/terrorist organizations.

I found this to be a humorous, honest, but somewhat sardonic, look at the effect of an angel’s presence in the world. It in no way mocks religion or religious beliefs but cynically does take on how religious icons can be annexed by others. I’ve always had a thing about religious authority’s frequent attempts to control believers and this book is pretty good at showing that. (Coincidentally, another book has had the luck to come out at a propitious moment, “El Loco de Dios en el Fin del Mundo”, by Javier Cercas; it has yet to be translated into English but it will be now that Pope Francis has passed away. The author is a firm atheist but is sent on a journalistic assignment with the Pope to Mongolia, with the express purpose of asking a question his mother, an avid Catholic, wants answered: will she be reunited with her late husband in the next world? Although a non-believer, the author shows great respect and admiration for those who do believe, and especially those who sacrifice in their beliefs. Keep an eye out.)

Nu vă enervează când o carte are un subiect care vă place, începe în forță, primele capitole sunt ceea ce vreți să citiți și apoi brusc se transformă într-o telenovelă insipidă? Pe mine mă enervează și mă face să mă întreb oare cum de autorul nu și-a dat seama ca nu merge în cea mai bună direcție? Oare ce l-o fi determinat să mute cursul acțiunii într-o zonă nefastă?

Acest lucru mi s-a întâmplat cu cartea Dulce companie de Laura Restrepo. Am fost atras de copertă ca un canar de bolul cu grăunțe și când am citit in descriere că este o poveste cu un înger, scrisă în stilul realismului magic, nu am ezitat. Mă așteptam la un roman grozav, mai ales că pe metrou, în drum spre casă am citit primele capitole care chiar mi-au plăcut. Nici scriitura nu părea proastă, poate puțin cam dulceagă în unele locuri, dar i-am oferit credit autoarei, convins că știe ea ce face.

Es increíblemente bella la manera tan sutil con la que te lleva esta historia a formar parte de algo improbable pero que al leerlo lo vives, lo ves, lo sientes y lo aceptas como real. Esta es una historia encantada que encanta, muy hermosa, bien escrita, personajes que evolucionan, que te aportan, que te atrapan, una historia como caída del cielo que se queda en ti, como volando en tu mente y una que otra vez escuchas las voces de su recuerdo. Dulce compañía es, en mi opinión, una denuncia a las clases sociales y su relación con la religión en Colombia. La inmersión de la protagonista en Galilea para cubrir la historia del ángel es una gran profecia sobre la marginalidad, impunidad y control que reinan sobre los barrios menos favorecidos de todo el país. Tiene una potente atmósfera que viaja entre el thriller y el suspenso, y nos introduce preguntas sobre la salud mental, la educación religiosa y la presencia del Estado en los barrios más pobres. Los personajes, sin embargo, se me hacen algo difusos, y por grandes partes de la novela me pregunté qué era lo que se quería contar en términos de forma. Laura Restrepo es una gran referente de la literatura nacional, que comprende la importancia de relatar la realidad cruda y oscura que se vive en muchas partes del país, con los momentos de luz que se escapan por entre las nubes. El ángel, divino o no, logró mover a una ciudad que se mueve entre olvidos, y se teje por ausencias de protección a los ciudadanos más vulnerables, qué, en realidad, venimos siendo casi todos.

A lo largo del libro, se ve muy claro el pasado de Restrepo como columnista/periodista política, es decir, Dulce compañía se cuenta como un reportaje. Además, la protagonista Mona es una reportera que está investigando la aparición de un ángel en Galilea, un barrio de Bogotá.

Característico de la autoría de Restrepo es su uso del humor para suavizar los temas duros que presenta en la novela (por ejemplo, la pobreza, la iglesia, lo que es real y lo que no es real...). Cualquier lector va a interactuar con este humor de manera diferente; por ejemplo, puede que un lector crea que es demasiado y que la historia y los temas / las referencias a la vida actual (de Latinoamérica) se comprenderían mejor con un tono más serio. Sin embargo, a mí me gustó mucho, y creo que como no soy de Latinoamérica, me ayudó a ver lo que Restrepo desea contar con Dulce compañía.

Hay un tema al que no le da suficiente atención, y es lo problemático de la relación de Mona y el ángel: él tiene alrededor de 18 años — nunca se revela su edad — y Mona tiene como 12 años más que él, pero Mona cree que al ser él un ángel las reglas no se les aplican; es decir, como el ángel no es un humano, no importa la diferencia de edad. En cuanto a esta cuestión de edad y el romance entre Mona y el ángel, un profesor mío me preguntó: "¿Habrías leído o comprendido esa relación de manera diferente si el autor fuese un hombre?" Aún no tengo una respuesta, pero ¿qué creéis?

En comparación con Delirio y Leopardo al Sol, este libro es excesivamente linear y mundano, sin la narración embellecida que siento que caracteriza a la autora. ¿Pintoresco? ¿Entretenido? ¡Por supuesto! Pero, en mi opinión, no destaca demasiado.

Excelente, cuenta una historia que parece sacada de la imaginación pero que ocurre mucho. Tiene momentos chistosos, también tiene suspenso de saber que sigue, te atrapa y no quieres parar hasta saber que pasa, aunque llegando a la parte final uno ya sabe el fin.

Amo profundamente la manera de escribir de Laura. La narrativa, el lenguaje, las descripciones, las metáforas y la forma de presentar los escenarios.

Es un libro particular con una historia diferente y poco convencional, que a la vez atrapa y te mantiene a la espera de los sucesos. Involucra elementos de la cotidianidad Bogotana que resalto y el abordaje a la mirada religiosa es genial.

Debo decir que en mi opinión el final no le hace justicia a la historia y se queda ahí, en el aire, sin concluir de forma interesante, lo que hace que este libro no sea 5 estrellas para mí.

Me encantó la narrativa de este libro. En primera persona se relata una historia que no deja despegar al lector hasta que el libro sea devorado completamente.
