Charles Henri Ford was an American poet, novelist, filmmaker, photographer, and collage artist best known for his editorship of the Surrealist magazine View (1940-1947) in New York City, and as the partner of the artist Pavel Tchelitchew. His very informative obituary of record is here.
"The simplest summation of Mr. Ford's life and work may be that he did exactly what he wanted, and seemingly knew everyone."
View was a glossy arts magazine from the 1940s and published in New York by a 17 year old editor by the name of Charles Henri Ford. It was also the Surrrealist house magazine of the war years - which meant people like Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Paul Bowles, and Marcel Duchamp contributed art/essays/stories to the fold.
It was a remarkable magazine that sort of looked like a high end fashion magazine - and that's saying a lot for a publication in the 40's. Beautifully designed, layed out, and quite an impression on people like my Dad, who had the whole collection, before his Mom threw it into the trash.
So this is sort of the greatest hits in one volume, and it's a fantastic one at that. You can sniff the boho period off its pages.
