A.H. Cunningham dazzles in this sensual vacation romance exploring what happens when you step out of the office, take a chance on yourself—and discover your deepest desires.

But first, she desperately needs a break, even if her overbearing mother doesn’t approve. For two glorious weeks, Gen’s giving herself permission to explore the beautiful beaches of Colón—and the stimulating attraction she shares with her sexy-as-hell driver, Adrián Nicolas.
After a family tragedy, Adrián's recently shifted his own focus to prioritizing the life part of a healthy work-life balance. To workaholic Gen, Adrián’s laid-back devotion to his family’s hometown hostel couldn’t be more appealing. Their long-term goals might not align, but two weeks in paradise only calls for seductive physical chemistry, and Gen and Adrián have got that, without a doubt.
But when their intimate connection flourishes beyond sunsets and spice, Gen finds herself questioning whether the career path she’s been on is even where she wants to be. With continents between them, a real relationship doesn’t feel possible. Until fate reveals their futures might be more closely woven than they thought, leaving them wondering whether a two-week fling might have what it takes to last forever.
From showing up to glowing up, these characters are on the path to leading their best lives and finding sizzling romance along the way.

This was my first read by this author and I don’t know if its just me but the writing just didn’t work for me. The story simply didn’t flow well, the interactions of the main characters felt awkward, stilted and outright uncomfortable for most of the book. The romance and chemistry felt forced, i had to skim most of the sex scenes. The characters were really difficult to connect with and I found myself drifting off more times than I liked.
But it wasn’t all bad though. I loved the the cultural aspect of the book. The Panamania-Congo culture was fascinating to read about. The times where the banter between the characters worked were really enjoyable. Overall, this was an okay read.
Thank you to Afterglow Books and NetGalley for the ARC!
The way this woman weaves words. The way she writes these love letters to fat women, to Black women, to the Diaspora, to the queer community and disguises them as books, is a gift. I always feel a deep sense of pride and a well of emotion after every A.H. Cunningham story I have had the pleasure of reading (which is all of them). Out of Office is just as passionate, fun, culturally rich, and written with the care I have come to expect from her work. Gen was so real and relatable. I was rooting for her from start to finish. Adrián is top tier book boyfriend material he was so attentive, patient, and perfect. I enjoyed the pace of the story, it has natural breaks that allowed you to take your time and savor the story. The writing was beautifully descriptive and clean. The chemistry between the characters was palpable and made my heart race. This had more humor than other works by the author and as an ultra fan I am encouraged by the continued growth in her work!
Out of Office is a novel that intrigued me from the time I saw the deal announced. A lot of the main action takes place in Panama where Genevieve decides to spend vacation resting and relaxing. When she's moving Colón to a smaller town of Aguaimar he takes her transportation driver up on a tempting offer to explore the chemistry between them.
I love a good vacation romance so that sucked me in. Hyper focused Gen gets to let her hair down for once with Adrian, her sexy Panamanian lover who is ready to please. As she spends time in his town with his family it's a welcome escape from the work promotion looming over her and her mother's huge expectations.
The conversations that the book has about career and happiness and finding the right balance were well done. It's been awhile since I've read a novel with an mc like Gen who had so much ambition and it wasn't merely about advancing her career but also advancing her community. I liked the realistic relationship with her mother who tries so hard to push her and in some ways lives through her. But her mother isn't demonized despite her harsh demeanor. Instead it's acknowledged that her mother is on a different path and an explanation is given for why she is the way she is.
I would've liked to see a little more development on Adrian because he's almost the perfect mate. There is a little bit of drama thrown in with him but it's easily resolved. And his one fault of being a people pleaser works to his advantage when it comes to Gen.
I received an arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. 3.5!
I went into book club rating this a 2. I came out of book club leaving it with a 1. If this was not a book club read, I would have DNFed. If you do audiobook, please note that the narrators for both characters don’t even remotely correspond to the characters on the front nor do their descriptions. The actual descriptions the author lists also doesn’t match the cover so it’s very confusing to determine what the MC’s should look like. This is a 90 day fiancé book gone wrong. I wanted to love this but I honestly did not. Also, I love smut but this smut was quite cringe and I got second hand embarrassment on one particular scene. I’ll also note that there is sexual orientation discussed in this book and the writing for this dialogue didn’t do it justice. It didn’t feel necessary to even mention it, especially given the response and that it didn’t add anything to the story. If you’re going to mention sexual orientation in this regard, do it right. This felt kind of sloppy and felt like an after thought add.
The 1 star is for finishing the book. But this is a Book club DNF (if it wasn’t a book club, I would have DNF).
This book was so beautifuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul!!! I was hooked from the first chapter and never lost my interest. Gen and Adri took me through the ringer here but it was worth it for their gorgeous romance!
I wanted to fight Gen at the end there though but she made it right (lol)
Thank you so much to Afterglow Books and Netgalley for providing an advanced copy of this! All thoughts and opinions are still my own.
AH Cunningham has become an auto-read author for me. I have absolutely adored her indie published titles and was so excited to see a trade romance from her! While this wasn't a new favorite, I think there was still a lot to love in this vacation romance.
This follows an overworked, career driven heroine who is taking her first ever vacation down in Panama. When her driver invites her to stay at his families beach side hostel, the two of them start an epic vacation romance.
Let's start first with what I liked.
AH Cunningham always writes the most complex and relatable characters. Even if you're nothing like this character, their trials and experiences are so universal. Genevieve is struggling with how to balance her life while figuring out what she really wants. Is this her dream or the one she's been pushed to want? That struggle with finding what you really want out of your life is something I think all of us can relate to.
The hero is all in with the heroine. I love a worshipping hero, and Adrián was definitely that.
While I loved the characters, I think what this book was missing for me was a driving plot. This was such a quiet, slice of life story, and I wanted there to be something we were moving towards.
This is really just a story watching two people, who are together right away, figure out how to be together long term. Working through where to live, family dynamics, balance, etc. While I love getting to see couples actually be together in a romance, I felt like it was almost too much in this case.
I didn't feel as though any of the side plots were strong enough to keep the momentum and pace of the story moving. So it felt like a very slow, meandering story.
While this might not be my favorite book from this author, I think her books in general are fantastic romances. And I will definitely continue to pick up everything she releases.
I read this one while on vacation, laying on the beach, with good food and a drink. Thankfully, it was the perfect vibe to relax and enjoy a sweet love story. The FMC is a workaholic who needed to break away from her mother's expectant gaze and just live in the moment for herself. She was so relatable, especially with regard to finding balance between her work-life and her own personal fulfillment and joy within herself. Adrian, the MMC, was a complete sweetheart, and I completely enjoyed the incorporation of his culture into the story. I also really appreciated the maturity with which the characters' relationship conflicts were handled by the author. The author has quite a few books on the backlist, which I will be purchasing to enjoy based on this book. If you're looking for a sweet vacation romance with a little bit of angst and wholesome compromise, then I definitely recommend giving this one a try.
Thanks to @netgally and Harlequin Romance for gifting me an e-arc of this wonderful book!!
Out of Office was a romantic oasis that captured my attention very quickly. Career focused Genevieve, finally decided to take a much needed vacation after a four month work assignment in Panama City. She was the prime example of what it means to be “all work and no play”. I felt Genevieve’s mother had too much influence on her career and I was waiting for her to set boundaries with her. Adrian was the perfect match; he was a hard worker but understood the meaning of balance.
After Adrian proposed the idea for Genevieve to spend her two week vacation with him, they end up getting to know each other more intimately. I was curious to see who would fall first, what their chemistry would be outside of the work environment, and what would happen at the end of the two weeks. I think the author did a great job showing the different cultures on page and provided good insight without it being overly done. It was just enough for me to feel like I was on the trip with them. With any new relationship there are tests and that was no different for Adrian and Genevieve. They had to compromise a lot but I think it worked because their love was so strong. I found myself frustrated at times because it seemed like they were content with not being with each other. But they were miserable without each other.
The story was very grown and sexy, it sort of reminded me of How Stella Got Her Groove Back and that’s definitely not a bad thing. The sexual chemistry was intense and the banter was a good touch. It was also realistic, especially the woes of citizenship. Overall, this was a good read.
I am ready to pack up all my things and move to Panama. This is how you write a vacation romance.
Genevieve is all work, no play….just the way her mother raised her. After spending a few months overseeing the final phases of a new resort she is determined to get some well deserved rest and relaxation. Adrian has spent the last 4 months driving Gen around and he he’s not quite ready to let her go. So he invites her to change her plans and come spend her vacation with him at his family property.
There was something that just felt right about these two. Their connection was so easy and normally that would give me pause but I didn’t feel that at all. They are grown people so they were definitely better at expressing themselves. I related so much to their conversations about career pressure and being successful, being happy and learning how to find that balance. Watching them learn each other AND figure out that balance was *chefs kiss*.
The writing was really beautiful. It was like a love letter to Panama and its rich history and culture. AH always has a way of making me feel while reading and this was no different. If you want to read a LOVE story I highly recommend this one!
Thank you to AH Cunningham, Afterglow Books(Harlequin) and NetGalley for the ARC. All thoughts and feelings are my own.
2 ⭐️ BLUF: Overall I was not invested in the FMC or MMC. The story was not exciting or captivating. It was slow and just… Idk yall. I was simply bored. I wouldn’t recommend it.
Me to self: Girl, why is this review so long?
DETAILED REVIEW: I was excited to read this book because I loved the idea of a love story unfolding on an island, 2 weeks to explore love, what happened on this island, what would be discovered, and how to turn off the work switch.
It just wasn’t the case for me. Disclaimer: I read with/ audio and I am not sure if that ruined the book for me because the reader for Adrián was not working for me! His voice was not what I expected it to be. Then in one of the scenes, he picked up a skillet and knife as a weapon… how was that gonna protect you… “it could just be me.”
TAKE THE MEAT, LEAVE THE BONE: I took two quotes from the entire book (which was towards the end of the book, had I stopped I wouldn’t have gotten here).
“How can I influence my field while being true to myself?” ⁃ I love this because being in a demanding field or male-dominated assessing and navigating how you want to show up in your career, to be influential, creative, and be authentically you simultaneously.
“If you want something you must negotiate from a position of power.” ⁃ I just love it.
That was something. I’ll be back later with my thought.
Ok I’m back. I don’t know who the people on the cover are but they are not the characters in this book.
I almost DNFd this it was moving to slow. A vacation romance insta love( kind of). There is chemistry, mutual pining, and two weeks of togetherness. She is a success driven workaholic. He used to be but has now found balance in entrepreneurship and family. This story was sensual and wholesome at the same time, make it make sense. He had one too many secrets for my liking, one of which he didn’t reveal until Five minutes before he proposed. She had no boundaries at work or with her mother. Can they make this vacation love full time. The characters are full and well written. This story is full of Panamanian culture. This is a story about self care and love. I recommend if you like a lusty vacation romance that doesn’t end when vacation is over.
If this wasn't a book club book I would've DNF'd it. I went into this book wanting to like it so much but I was SO disappointed. There was so much possibility but it fell very short for me.
Both MCs annoyed me."I love a "mine" man but the MMC was so clingy and blah that i was just unamused by him and i honestly dont think we needed his POV. It couldve all been told from the FMCs stand point. The FMC not being able to think for herself and being so driven to complete a 20 yr plan because mommy said so just irked. Not to mention they rushed into everything in a way that just made no sense and then just continued to rush everything.
There was some "spice" but as a girl who loves some spicy books, this was just cringy on a whole new level. I got 2nd hand embarrassment from it and that is difficult to accomplish for me.
I still have no idea what either of these characters is supposed to look like and that bothered me too. There were also character "facts" that could've added something great to the plot but just didn't go anywhere or add anything but more questions for me..... I have more but I'll end it here.
thank you to NetGalley and Afterglow for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review 🩵 • • these characters were not expecting to fall in love. both had plans and were on paths that they believed would not work together. but love doesn’t really seem to care about all of that lol.
a workaholic and an ex-workaholic may not seem like the best match but these two were so obviously made for each other. the love, care, patience, and understanding that they show each other…yeah 🥹
I wasn’t a fan of Adri holding back on Gen for as long as he did with that “secret” but I can understand that he is on his healing journey and wasn’t quite okay with talking about it just yet. I do like that it didn’t lead to a third act breakup. if you know me, you may know how much I strongly dislike those lol. yay for not having one in this 🥰
make sure you take care of yourself so that you can be the best you for everyone/everything else. love on you. show up for yourself first. thank you @ A.H. for the reminder to prioritize yourself and what you need.
the history lessons were also nice to have. if you aren’t familiar with either place, be ready to learn some pretty cool and interesting information!
3.5 ⭐️ Ok, this was a spicy lil summer kick off read! Set in beautiful Panama, a place I’ve never read about, it had so many wonderfully surreal vibes! The island travels, the ambiance, the culture, the man 🥵
This story had some good bones. I love the focus of having a proper work-life balance, while still being ambitious and climbing the corporate ladder. There comes a point where you have to prioritize the things that matter most and it was nice seeing Genevieve figure that out for herself.
I loved the added concept of Black travel and blogging the travels to share gems with others. I also loved the deep conversations on race, giving back to the community that Gen and Adrian shared. Their family dynamics added some good depth and drama to the story!
The steam was heavy here and I did start to skip thru some of the scenes. All I need is 1 or 2 good scenes in a story, but I mean, a great vacay entails lots of great sex so there’s that 😏 I was definitely feeling the vacay fling, but couldn’t really buy into the full bloom love.
The cover is out of this world stunning! It’s giving everything!! I really enjoyed the narration and the MMC’s sexy latin accent!
This was a steamy insta love, dual POV, vacation romance between Genevieve, an African American workaholic and Adrian, a local bisexual Panamanian man she meets while taking a break after a work trip and ends up spending two hot weeks in forced proximity with him at his family resort. When Gen returns to the States, the two find themselves missing each other deeply and decide on a hasty marriage, moving into Gen's apartment together.
While I wasn't a huge fan of how fast the two fell for one another and decided on big life decisions, I did enjoy the focus on finding work-life balance and learning to move on after grief. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and #gifted finished copy in exchange for my honest review! This was my first book by A. H. Cunningham but definitely won't be my last!
Out of Office is a steamy and engaging romance that takes readers on a sultry journey to the beautiful beaches of Colón.
The chemistry between Genevieve and Adrián is palpable, and their interactions sizzle with passion and desire. The exploration of personal growth, work-life balance, and the potential for a long-lasting relationship adds depth to the story.
Both Genevieve and Adrián are well-developed characters with their own strengths and vulnerabilities, making them relatable and endearing.
The setting in Panama provided a lush backdrop for their romance to unfold, adding an exotic flair to the narrative. The themes of self-discovery and re-evaluating one's priorities are well-handled, offering thought-provoking moments amidst the steamy romance.
Out of Office was a satisfying read
I think this was a beautifully written book and felt fully immersed while reading it.
2.5 ⭐️ I wanted to enjoy this more but it just fell flat for me. I honestly just finished it to say I finished. While I enjoyed the career driven FMC and the Panamanian culture, the romance just wasn’t convincing to me. The story jumps right in with the couple basically being fully in love with no opportunity to really fall in love with the characters or root for them to be together. Nothing drew me to the characters or storyline. Their interactions are awkward and they literally know nothing about each other. This was just okay. Can’t say I would recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I'm going to be honest, this book was just not good in my opinion. [ SPOILERS AHEAD] The relationship basically kicks off from the beginning of the book and it happens so fast that you can't even root for them to get together because there was not enough character building or pining between them.
The entire time their relationship felt like physical attraction rather than the two of them genuinely wanting to be together because they liked each other. And they moved so fast in their relationship that it was actually comical, I felt like I was reading a "90 day fiancé" fanfic. Like what do you mean you're going to let her come stay in your family's rental? You're going to move in and get married after barely knowing anything about this person?
Character wise, they have no personality outside of being recovering workaholics, people pleasers and horny 30 somethings.
Thank you Netgalley, Harlequin Romance and A. H. Cunningham for the arc.
This was my first read by this author. I do have other books by them but just haven’t gotten to those yet. I felt the story was just okay. Somewhere along the way the writing went flat for me and i was moving along to finish. Liked the concept of a workaholic with dreams of hitting certain things in their career but also knowing when they need a break. Then the laid back person that has their own business and loves their family very much. Then you have the overbearing mother with her mess. I didn’t fall in love with the characters.
What i enjoyed most was the talk of career and realizing what means most to you. The culture we got to experience through this book. Lastly, that finding love is never too late.
Wasn’t fun, wasn’t an emotional hard hit…I don’t know how to explain my thoughts on this book. I binged it (via audiobook) over the course of two days and honestly probably should’ve just DNF’d it. Like other reviews I’ve read in hopes that I’ll be inspired to pinpoint what exactly didn’t work for me, I think the only thing I can muster up is that I simply wasn’t invested in the characters whatsoever. There were pacing issues that I believe really knocked me out of the story. Would love to see more Afterglow titles from the author but this one was a No for me.
Told from a dual POV the novel follows Genevieve Raymond overachiever, people pleaser, and a workaholic. After her success with opening a new hotel in Panama she’s in dire need of a vacation that shortly after turns into a baecation. Finding herself attracted to her sexy driver Adrian Nicolas he offers her the opportunity to stay at his family’s hometown hostel during her vacation. But upon arrival they’re informed no rooms are available forcing Gen to stay with Adrian for those two weeks.
This is a good steamy beach read. I initially started reading the book along with audio thinking it would add to my reading experience. But I was disappointed with the narrator for Adrian. His voice did not do it for me actually almost made me stop reading the book. Hate to say it but if you want to enjoy it don’t listen to the audio lol.
Being forced into close proximity both MC’s have no choice but to acknowledge their growing attraction for each other. It was giving how Gen got her groove back until their feelings got in the mix. Is two weeks really long enough to fall head over heels for someone? Maybe not but Gen and Adrian had this undeniable chemistry and an intimate connection that made them realize there’s a thin line between passion and responsibility. Not wanting their time in paradise to end both are left wondering if this two week fling has what it takes to make it to forever.
Overall, the book was pretty good. Readers can expect themes surrounding fate, desire, self-discovery, personal growth, career, family dynamics, and the challenges of navigating long distance relationships. The characters felt realistic and likable but Gen’s mom not so much. The author also didn’t hold back in the romantic scenes and I loved the representation we’re given throughout the book. If you’re looking for a steamy romance you found it. Special thanks to the author @HarlequinPublicityTeam @HarlequinBooks for my advanced copy‼️
I really wanted to like this one more. It was just okay. I would say like 3.5, rounded up for Goodreads. I feel like everything in this book was just alright. The main characters, the story, the writing - everything was just like “eh okay.”
I did really like the overall premise and conflict within the main female character. As someone who has been going through the same internal struggle of having the career of a lifetime, and starting to pivot to have more of a life outside of my job has been interesting. I feel like that and Gen’s struggles with balancing wanting to expand her career and being a potential contributor to gentrification was interesting. I loved, loved, loved, the queer BIPOC representation in the book, and I liked most of the side characters.
I also liked some of the writing. Now, the author definitely can write some beautiful scenes, at the same time, I felt like there were parts of the story that were disjointed from other parts of the book. I wish it was consistently, the beautiful writing of the spicy scenes, IN some of the more mundane parts of the story. There are also just whole plot points that we just skim over, such as Adrian’s immigration story, and the resolution of the conflict between Gen and her mother. I feel like the book starts in the middle, when I would’ve loved to feel and experience some of the build-up between Adrian and Gen.
I feel like I might recommend this book to someone who is looking for a steamy, low angst, quick-moving, story that just works if you’re going off vibes ONLY. There are some larger themes at play that make the story interesting, but the point is really a steamy romance - just focus on that. LOL.
1. i’m so serious when i say that the MMC’s narrator is one of the most irritating audiobook voices i’ve ever heard. it really messed with the fantasy for me and i wanted to throw my airpods across the room multiple times.
2. the author’s physical descriptions of the characters do not match the cover models. like at all. so that was interesting.
3. i’ve never seen an episode of 90 day fiancé in my life. but i can imagine that the show is like this book.
I'm not in the mood for codependent family dynamics and nosy sisters. Hope Gen and Adrián enjoy their fling!
Characters: Gen is a 37 year old Black Panamanian American hotel GM. Adrián is a Black Panamanian driver and car service owner. This is set in Colón, Panamá.
Content notes: codependency, workaholism, past death of MMC's parents, family pressure for marriage, on page sex, alcohol, hangover, gender essentialist language, ableist language
Two week romance, long distance, overbearing mother, demanding job. Will the instant love turn into a long term relationship or will her job get in the way of their love? It’s a cutesy hallmark read.
So get this, Genevieve has worked very hard to get this new promotion as VP of Operations for the hotel chain she works for but just when she's about to get all she's ever wanted professionally she's tasked to open a new location in Panama, there she meets Adrián. Adrian is her laid back driver who she's been crushing on since forever. He's a former workaholic who's made it his mission to show her all the things Panama has to offer before she returns to USA. They have two weeks to make up for months of crushing in silence. And while their bond grows Genevieve stars to wonder if her career is more important than having a life outside of work
This book was soooooo good!! Adrián and Genevieve were so cute together. And soooooo THIRSTY. I was, for real, laughing, giggling and kicking my feet the entire time! But I was also going through it with Genevieve. Never in my life have I ever wanted someone to play hooky more than I wanted Genevieve to play hooky. Girl worked so much she had me STRESSING. Like, BABE, you’re in PANAMÁAAAA living your best life and you got this ADONIS at home, at your beck and call, wanting you to relax, feeding you great food and telling you “estas que te chorreas” y, ¿tu crees que yo voy para el trabajo después de eso? HELL NAH. I’m staying my 🍑 at home. They’re lucky if they ever see me again. Cause you will NEVER see catch me outside! And Adrian was so OBSESSED with that woman!! I lived for that. That woman needed him to show her 🎵a whole new woooooorld🎵 and that he did!!! My man went through something horrible that made him realize that living to work was not the vibe and he course-corrected. I LOVED that even though they agreed to disagree on what a work/life balance looked like for them they still respected the other’s choices and cheered each other on!
Anyhoo, if you want to read about one of the cutest couples ever and possibly end up wanting to fight somebody’s mom this is the book for you!! Read it and thank me later.
