I was actually going to rate this three stars until the last few chapters of the book. I found Friedman’s argument for wearing a tichel compelling, even though I will probably adopt a different head covering. Overall, I found her halachic discussion to focus on the empowerment aspect of the mitzvah.
What I didn’t like was how, as Friedman argues in the last few chapters sheitels can cause other great pain and ….. cancer. As she writes, “… the disease of cancer began at the exact time in history when women began wearing sheitels.” That is simply not true, as cancer has existed as early as mankind has.
I understand Friedman’s vantage point of utilizing primarily Torah law in these topics, but if you’re going to bring in science or others’ feelings, it seems like a guilt trip for women rather than an opportunity to connect with one’s religion.
