पुरुषोत्तम लक्ष्मण [पु. ल.] देशपांडे हे लोकप्रिय मराठी लेखक, नाटककार, नट, कथाकार व पटकथाकार, दिग्दर्शक आणि संगीत दिग्दर्शक होते. त्यांना महाराष्ट्राचे लाडके व्यक्तिमत्त्व असे म्हटले जायचे. त्यांच्या आद्याक्षरांवरून महाराष्ट्रात ते प्रेमाने पु. ल. म्हणून ओळखले जातात. लेखक आणि कवी वामन मंगेश दुभाषी ऊर्फ ऋग्वेदी हे पु.ल.देशपांड्यांचे आजोबा होते तर आणि सतीश दुभाषी हे मामेभाऊ आहेत.

I think I can safely say that there is yet to be a book by P.L that disappoints you. In his usual charm, he essays out articles and stories in this collection book. Reading it you are reminded of his command over language, humor and his incredible knack of observing human nature minutely.

एखादं पुस्तक जेव्हा तुम्हाला कॉमेडी सीरियल पेक्षा जास्त हसवते तेव्हा तुम्हाला जो आनंद मिळतो त्याची उपमा कशालाच येत नाही. इंग्रजीमध्ये मार्क ट्वेन आणि पी जी वोडेहाऊस यांच्या पुस्तकांत ही जादू मिळते. तीच जादू पुलंच्या या पुस्तकात पाहायला मिळाली. जीवनातल्या साध्या सरळ विषयावर विनोद करणे आणि सोबतच भाषेच्या प्रभुत्त्वाचा देखावा सादर करणे पुलंखेरिज अजुन कुणाला जमणे क्वचितच शक्य असेल...

हे कदाचित पुलंचे सुरुवातीला लिहिलेले पुस्तक असेल. ते एवढे बेकार लिखाण करु शकतात असा कधी विचार आलाच नव्हता. पुर्ण पुस्तकात विनोद हा पाहुण्या कलाकारासारखा येतो जातो. शेवटची एकपुत्री कथा तर कहरच करते. वाचवत नव्हते हे शेवटी शेवटी.

पुलंचे पठ्ठे असाल तर नकाच वाचू.
