Après nous avoir fait découvrir le Talmud dans son Introduction au Talmud et la kabbale dans La Rose aux treize pétales, Adin Steinsaltz nous initie aux merveilles de la prière juive. Celle-ci s'articule autour de deux grands pôles, dont la formulation remonte à l'Antiquité le Chema, la profession de foi juive, et la Amida, la prière proprement dite. La Amida, qui signifie littéralement en hébreu ètre debout, comporte dix-neuf bénédictions où alternent louanges, professions de foi et requètes particulières ou collectives. Elle couvre tout le spectre des croyances et des espérances du judaïsme et constitue, en fait, une véritable anthologie de la foi juive, riche en références bibliques et en postulats théologiques. Durant une année, le rabbin Adin Steinsaltz a dialogué avec le rabbin Josy Eisenberg lors d'une série télévisée diffusée sur France 2. Ensemble, ils portent un regard moderne sur ce texte qui constitue le sommet de la piété juive.

Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz (Hebrew: עדין שטיינזלץ) or Adin Even Yisrael (Hebrew: עדין אבן ישראל) is internationally regarded as one of the leading rabbis of this century. The author of many books, he is best known for his monumental translation of and commentary on the Talmud. Rabbi Steinsaltz founded the Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications. Under its aegis, he has published to date 58 books on the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, religious thought, sociology, historical biography, and philosophy. He teaches at Mayanot in Jerusalem. In 1988, he was awarded the Israel Prize, Israel's highest honor. He has received honorary Ph.D. degrees from Yeshiva University, Bar Ilan University, and Ben Gurion University.
