The comic book arm of the company started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1961, with the company later that year launching Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. Marvel has since become the largest American comic book publisher, surpassing its longtime competitor DC Comics.
On December 31, 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4.24 billion.

This paperback consists of 5 comics, which feels rather like 4 + an epilogue. The modern digital artwork is quite beautifully coloured and vibrant, on glossy paper, although the actual drawings are not of the Kirby, Romita standard that I grew up with. The storyline however, is all too much. It's every kind of multiverses and craziness with a cast of dozens of heroes, with Spiderman, Hulk, Ghost Rider and Wolverine all putting in cameo appearaances. About 70% of the way through, I felt like I was just ploughing on to reach the end which should've come sooner. Loved the Alex Ross variant cover though. 3/5
