Now in paperback, this account based on real events is the story of a woman who realises her dream of living in paradise, but reveals there is a price to pay for that reality. Discovering that the Catalans always stick together against an outsider, the author learns to play their game, so providing an unexpected finale of her own.
An enjoyable book, but I was getting a bit aggravated trying to figure out whether it was fictional or factual e.g. who was the rock star ex etc? However, it was fascinating in its regard to the Rennes le Chateau mystery which was my only real reason for reading this book. It also made me want to go back to Girona.
Endeavor Press has reissued this book, which was originally published in 1999 (thanks to them and to Netgalley for the ARC)-= and it's a book that did merit the second look. I enjoyed reading about the Catalan region, which I have not visited. Chaplin's vibrant prose brought it to life. I liked that not everything went smoothly and not everyone was nice (as so often happens in these sorts of books) because that made it more real. A nice read for a summer afternoon!
