Just as she joyously discovers that she is pregnant, a tragic event occurs on the family ranch that almost causes Abbie to lose not only the land but her unborn baby as well. Original.
Kristen Heitzmann is the award winning author of contemporary romantic suspense, psychological suspense, and historical series. An artist and musician, she'll also be found hiking the Rocky Mountain trails.
This is definitely one of the more heart-wrenching ones in the series. Poor Abbie has lost her sparkle, and no wonder. She certainly seems to have more than her fair share of grief. Still, as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Never a dull moment in this book as we follow along all of our heroine's trials and hardships. Can she ever get over the tragedy? As I always say, these books just get better and better as they progress.
This is 3rd in the series and my least favorite. Whoever heard of a Main Character in a romance dying? Poor Monte survived a fire and a brutal beating in book 2, but he gets killed by a bull and before he even sees his child being born. And it is so obvious he dies so that Abby can end up with Cole who fell in love with her in book 1. I like Cole but not with Abby. I felt that the author should have given him a new love interest after Abby and Monte married. I also did not like the way Abby reacted to Monte's death. Her anger and bitterness were over dramatic for her character. The only thing I really liked about this book was the return of a priest and the Irish settlers to the mission so it gets 2 stars for that.
It's a testament to the talent of the author when the heroine is a lady whose personality does not agree with me, and yet I enjoy the book. It was a captivating page-turner, even though many of the chapters seemed to be a bit disconnected; one minute X was happening, and then next chapter Y happened, which wasn't connected at all; not that it wasn't important, but the story did not follow a sequential pattern; that paved a way for a major plot twist, which basically changed the entire course of the book.
I mentioned that Abbie's personality didn't do it for me; what I can say is that her independent, rebellious spirit was always consistent, and influenced all her actions. What I did really like about her was her fierce determination to care for her children. She was actually a mother. Though there were several messages throughout, that particular message was a bit rarer, and special because of it.
Another great novel, not only in this series but in general! While the first part of this book is not as action packed as book 2 it adds more depth and interest to our story and the characters/relationships. A little over half way through however you are sure to encounter a pivotal point in the story and one that will cause pain and upheaval for our characters, and hopefully will bring a growth in faith. When tragedy strikes who do we look to? Do we trust in God, His love and goodness or do we become angry and bitter? As much as we think we can take care of ourselves and handle things we are desperately in need of The Lord. Will we allow pride and fear to rule us? These are issues that are faced in book 3.
This is one of those books that has you thinking about it long after you set it down or finish it. It lingers with you and excites you for the next book. If you are searching for a humorous and light read, in which life is idyllically perfect, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for a novel filled with drama and surprises that leave you devouring the pages then pick this one up. I like that Heitzmann isn't afraid to risk offending some by taking some risk with her stories and doing the unexpected. Her characters, their love, struggles and ultimately their faith make her novels ones I could read over and over again. These stories and characters come to life, and take root in your heart and mind. I can't wait to read book 4! Four and a half Stars!
**Update: see what I have written in my update to the first book in the series. I do not know what I saw in this book or how I could have possibly rated this book so highly the first time around. This book did not survive round two of the "purge" from my personal collection.**
This book just might be my favorite in the series, although it's hard to choose because I really do love them all. I like this one so much more than the second one because there's so much character growth, especially for Abbie. She wasn't a static character before by any means but in this book she had to change. Circumstances changed her and she had to learn how to grow from there. (I can't say too much more without giving away a spoiler, albeit a fairly obvious one.) The emotions Heitzmann captures in this book are so real and gut-wrenching. It would be almost impossible to come away from this book without having felt something. Also, those few trite, Christian historical fiction clichés that appeared in the first book on the series? They definitely don't make an appearance here. I can't recommend this book or series any higher. They're absolutely incredible.
Don't read this book first!! I would highly recommend reading this series in order. This book will spoil the first two for you. I had a very hard time getting through the second half of this book because I had fallen in love with all the characters. I won't spoil your reading, but please don't read this series out of order.
Honor's Quest by Kristen Heitzmann – In any other Western Saga, Abbie’s life would have settled by now. But no this is just the halfway mark! Heartbreak in this one, but so well written! Happy Reading!
This was a page turner. It got me thoroughly involved with the characters. My only concern is that the ending left alot. It's almost as if you could go right into the next book like reading a new chapter.
