The fourth installment of the Amaranthine series delves back into a world of bloody darkness. Katelina and Jorick should be planning a trip to the tropics. Instead, they have to rescue a kidnapped vampire. How did humans capture and hold him on their own? Did they have help from an immortal? If so, who? With the appearance of a serial vampire killer, both the questions and answers grow murky. Is everything connected, or is it just a coincidence? As Oren’s attack on The Guild draws closer, new agendas cut a gruesome path that leads Jorick and Katelina back to the Citadel where the ancient monster Malick reigns. The flames of war ignite against a backdrop of fear and confused loyalties. Can Jorick and Katelina rise from the ashes, or will they be consumed by the inferno of destruction?
Joleene Naylor is the author of the glitter-less Amaranthine vampire series, a world where vampires aren't for children. As a compliment to the novel series, she has also written several short stories, including the Vampire Morsels collection.
In her spare time, Joleene is a freelance book cover designer and for-fun photographer . She maintains several blogs full of odd ramblings, and occasionally updates her website at JoleeneNaylor.com. In what little time is left she watches anime and pins recipes and DIY, all from a crooked Victorian house in Villisca, Iowa. Between her husband and her pets, she is never lonely, and should she ever disappear one might look for her on a beach in Tahiti, sipping a tropical drink and wearing a disguise.
She currently has several books available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple and Smashwords.
It is hard to know how to review current fiction, especially on a site like this. After all, to really qualify for five stars in the context of history, with writers like say Dostoevsky and Shakespeare and Euripides in the mix, a book/play/whatever would have to be up there with them. Few if any contemporary writers can seriously hope to get there. So for contemporary writers, to be able to give them five stars, I have had to adopt a different standard, as others give five stars to books I'd hesitate even to read.
Before reading Joleene Naylor's vampire books, I thought very little of this genre. Its sudden burst of popularity seemed like a phase teenagers go through more than anything adults would notice except perhaps in horror pun intended. I happened on this book's predecessor and enjoyed it a lot. This, the latest in a series that apparently the author plans to extend indefinitely, I enjoyed even more. The writing seems to me to be tighter, the characterisation fuller, the storyline more interesting, and the denouement convincing and exciting. The "lore" of vampires matters but the story itself extends beyond this and could be classed as a thriller were it not for the vampire aspects. It's an adult book not only because it has sex and violence that most parents would be reluctant for their children to read but for its underlying themes. Anyone interested in a different read could do a lot worse.
In this fourth installment in the Amaranthine series, it is the holdays. Yes, Katelina learns the joy of Season's Greetings vampire style. Its like The Nightmare Before Christmas, but with more blood.
A little visual treat Joleene burns into the minds of her readers, is how the vampires go about punishing a traitor of their own kind. Can you say drained, drawn and quartered, and let's not forget jaw-dropping and buried! Gross! You gotta love that kind of sick dedication to one's work...
Ah! But what Amaranthine book would be complete without a trip to the Citadel? Well, Ashes of Deceit is surely no exception to that rule. Once again, we find Malick flexing his ancient vampire muscle. He wants everyone to know that he is King Kong.
Well hold onto your hats, partners! Cuz there is a fight a brewin'. Yep, you will not be let down by the grand finale Ms. Naylor has in store for you.
Oh, but we cannot have you going quietly into the night thinking that all's well that ends well. Nope, the foundations have been laid for Heart of the Raven. And I will be reading it soon enough...
Ashes of Deceit continues the intriguing Amaranthine Night Series by Joleene Naylor. In this book, we meet Malick who turned Jorick into a vampire. While Jorick is forced to become an executioner again, Oren plans his attack on the Guild.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only is it a well-written vampire story, but it is also a love story, a mystery story, and an action-packed adventure story.
Joleene Naylor continues the story of Jorick and Katelina, and brings in many of the readers' favorite characters, including Verchiel.
I could not set this book down, and stayed up many a late night because I just didn't want to stop reading it.
I'd recommend this book for adults who want a great read, and especially adults who love to follow the same characters from book to book.
Joleene Naylor has once again successfully combined the elements of adventure, romance, thrills and mystery in her novel, Ashes of Deceit. Joleene has enabled the reader to follow the same characters through her ongoing vampire stories in a way that seems real. A challenge of any vampire novel is to make the unreal believable. By introducing adult situations the novel became convincingly plausable and real to me as the reader.
I'd recommend this as a must read for anyone who enjoys a really good vampire story.
No one can come up with a story this good and keep it going plus have you begging for more! I absolutely LOVE this series and the author. This is not a cheesey love story, it is full of action and adventure and is not sugar-coated in anyway. Joleene gives such detail without it being overly noticeable that there were a few times I would go to look for a movie that I wanted to finish and realized I had been reading one of the books in the Amarnthine series not watching a movie. A MUST READ!
What can I say but amazing as always! I really enjoyed this one! it was full to the brim with chaos and battles and intrigue. Joleene never fails to disappoint when it comes to this stuff, there was something around every corner and Verchiel was at his all time best and most annoying as per usual.
In this book Katelina and Jorick are planing on relaxing and maybe going on vacation, ya right like that would ever happen. When they discover that a vampire has been kidnapped by humans and is being held hostage katalina knows that Jorick can do nothing but put their plans on hold to rescue the poor vampire. Along the way they make some new friends and discover new things about themselves and new things about old acquaintances.
No sooner then getting home then they are forced to the Guild and in to Malicks presence again. Malick forces Jorick to rejoin the Executioners or he will kill Katelina. Jorick has little choice but to return to his post at Malick's side but it doesn't mean he has to be happy about it. What kind of games is Malick up to now? Katelina isn't sure but she is sure it isn't good and she is doubly sure that people are going to die.
Explosions rock the Citadel. has Oren finally attacked? or is Malick finally setting his plans in motion? one things for sure Katelina must find Jorick and get out before there is no other chance to do so.
Awesome book! Verchiel and Katelina were awesome in this one! I sure love that vampire...lol...he such a pain in the ass...lol...and we got to see the executioner side of Jorick in this one which was creepy let me say! keep up the great work Joleene!
Katelina and Jorick must delay peace and quiet once again. Jorick has promised to help find a captured vampire, and the rescue mission creates additional problems. Once again, Jorick and Katelina find themselves at the Citadel. Jorick's punishment for his crimes shocks everyone. With war looming over them, how will Jorick decide where his loyalties lie? Who will survive the epic battle?
Out of all the Amaranthine books, this one was the most gripping. Each book in the series gets better and better as the author delves deeper into vampire culture, introduces new characters, and illustrates the complex relationships and vendettas between the vampires in this fascinating world. Katelina and Jorick continue to face incredible challenges with each new book, but they always overcome each problem by relying on their fierce love and loyalty to one another.
After reading this series, my perception of modern-day vampires will never be the same. I have renewed faith in the genre and feel so fortunate to have finally found a series that makes me anticipate each new book, or each snippet of the author's works-in-progress as she posts them on her blog. I can honestly say I'm a huge fan of this series and I'm proud to add Joleene Naylor to my list of all-time favorite authors.
War against the Citadel is coming. Oren and his allied covens have begun making plans. Of course, all Katelina wants is to be left in peace with Jorick in their little house by the sea. After a rescue and surprise attack, the two lovers find themselves back behind the walls of the Citadel and at Malick's whim. Love, loss, jealousy, betrayal and manipulation are beginning to become routine for our poor little protagonists.
Another fantastic chapter in the Amaranthine series. Thus far, Ashes of Deceit was the most action packed, tear jerking novel yet and I cannot wait to dig into Heart of the Raven. The complicated relationship of a human who loves a vampire with a psycho for a master comes to a head in this exciting installment!! I have been gushing over these books for the last several days and I will continue to for a long time. It has been so refreshing to read well written, well thought out, self-published work. I feel like I need to end every sentence of this review with an exclamation point because it was just that good!
In this installment of the Amaranthine world.... Katelina and Jorick are still trying for a vacay from it all!!! This series has become my new guilty pleasure!!! I can't wait to see what else happens in this vampire world! I cannot wait to pick up the rest in the series because I must know what comes next!!
Once again the Amaranthine series pulls me in and I can't stop until it's finished! In this installment we get to meet Jorrick's master Malick. He is just as awesome and fearful as promised in the previous books. There are so many times I was worried for Katelina's and Jorrick's lives! On to the next book!
omg! this series just keeps getting better and better! the charecters are giving me the chills. it's almost as if they are in the room with me! can this series get any better? oh I so hope so! I have 4 more to go, can't wait to see!!
