Feral Colony

Rate this book
Is a world of perpetual sunlight and savagery the only hope for Earth’s last humans?

Ember, Seven, and their companions survived the apocalypse, but that was easy compared to the challenge they face now. These six improbable heroes must find a habitable world for twelve thousand people being held in stasis—the last remaining humans on Earth.

The clock is ticking. Ember and the others are dying from contamination, and their only hope for a cure is to get the job done. With several terraformed worlds to choose from, the first was a bust. Sure, that planet was pleasant enough, until a solar eclipse occurred and billions of flesh-eating bugs emerged from hiding.

With no time to rest, the team jumps to the second world, Coratune. Terraformed centuries ago and seeded with humans and other Earth life forms, Coratune seems promising. But the humans here haven’t progressed as planned—they’ve gone feral. Forced by a dysfunctional robot into a harrowing journey across a hostile landscape, Ember and her companions find a glimmer of hope… but can hope endure in the midst of appalling savagery?

Excellent writing, superb storytelling and very innovative future science! The brisk but carefully focused pace sweeps you through this novel to vividly experience deft twists, unanticipated turns and deeper messages percolating through the science, enticing the imagination to consider very real probable futures. I reread many places to savor them again. The second in this series, the story just keeps getting better, richer and more compelling.

I received this book as an ARC (Advance Reviewer Copy) directly from the author in exchange for checking for typos that got through the editing process and an honest review.

The first of the series, Primal Eclipse, was so good that I signed up for this author's advance reviewer group, which is how I received this copy.

The characters from "Primal Eclipse" face the challenges of another terraformed world. I will not go into detail so as not to give any spoilers.

The relationships between the characters continue their development. The descriptions of their interactions with this world and the flora and fauna of it are very intriguing.

I do suggest reading "Primal Eclipse" first, but not necessarily.

I am constantly amazed by the author's inventiveness and the amazing worlds he conjures up in all his books/series.This one is no exception and the fast moving action keeps you guessing as to how the team will get out of each of the situations in which they find themselves going from one danger to another, but finding a solution in the end. Looking forward to how they continue their mission in the next book.

I love Stan C. Smith’s writing! The perspective he brings to his science fiction material resonates on so many levels, and his Feral Colony story is no exception. This second book in the Peregrine Outpost series delivers a gripping storyline. The characters are a perfect blend of vulnerability and moxie. Bound by mutual trust and brilliant alliances, the team plunges headlong into a dangerous new world on planet Coratune. Smith does not disappoint, weaving in a bit of humor and romance with a multifaceted tale that creates a down-to-the-wire adrenaline rush. Jump on board and enjoy the incredible ride.

Another great story in this series. Asur tenoth the first planet visited was unsuitable.
So seven ember and the others must try another planet. What will they find and what dangers will they face. What follows is a rollercoaster of a ride with plenty of action and suspense
A real page turner very gripping could not put it down
Definitely recommend this book and the whole series

What an imagination! Vivid, weird, unusual, inventive, and just back to plain weird, the worlds that Stan creates are ones you will never have encountered elsewhere. Taken mostly from real life, mashed up and written into fascinating stories, these creatures and cultures are what makes the stories sing.
Well written, entrancing characters which are developing well, and dramatic situations, action and plenty of lovely twists, produce a riveting read.
You probably want to have read the earlier ones in the series to make full sense of what is going on.

Feral Colony is another home run for Stan.
In deep space several hundred light years from the ruined shell of Earth our intrepid crew is still struggling. They are searching for a suitable planetary home for the 12,000 human survivors in stasis on the destroyed corpse of Earth. There aren’t many prospective planetary candidates remaining in the galactic zone they are combing. As part of the overall project, several planets in so called Goldilocks zones have been terraformed and seeded with flora and fauna appropriate to creating an environment suitable for supporting human life. This one seems to be a somewhat better candidate than their previous disappointments but as the inspection proceeds the blush is rapidly fading from the proverbial rose. The inspection crew are constrained by time due to their rapidly progressing terminal illness and the searchers have only one way to escape from the planet. Their lifeboat is a device that creates a wormhole connected to their mother ship.
The bad news is a seed group of colonists sent with the original terraforming package have evolved… more or less. That is to say; more of the bad attributes of our better angels have surfaced than the desirable attributes. These bad fellows have violently helped themselves to the parts needed to assemble the wormhole creating device. The civilization, which has barely evolved beyond stone age levels, is using the parts necessary to assemble the wormhole device as trading material and their desire to possess the parts is serious enough for them to kill each other in order to seize the parts. The clock is ticking and the delegation must recover the parts posthaste in order to assemble the gate before time runs out and all are marooned on this far less than ideal world for the rest of their natural lives. Under the circumstances their natural lives will be very very short!
Meanwhile the snarky AI, Hortense, who runs the mother ship still has no paucity of sarcastic suggestions for the hapless crew. The effectiveness of an experiment reanimating a human being after several centuries in stasis is a success albeit one with baggage. The reanimated girl returns to consciousness and turns out to be, as many teenagers are, solidly convinced that she knows more than the entire crew combined. Hortense has met her match in this girl and is incapable of handling her shenanigans. It is very amusing!
Meanwhile back on the planet surface things have gotten, shall we say, bleak. Despite, like medical doctors and StarTrek crew members, the crew has been admonished to follow the prime directive to, above all, do no harm the crew find themselves in a major war with the inhabitants of the planet. Plenty of harm is done in the name of recovering the parts of the wormhole device. But in the end…
Well, the end will be revealed when you read this riveting book. When you get your hands on this book make sure you have a comfortable place to sit and a big supply of snacks. Because you are not going to want to put it down… I promise you.

Step 1 - Download or buy this book
Step 2 - Find a comfortable place, get yourself a nice drink - turn off your phone because you do not want to be disturbed.
Step 3 - Settle down for a wonderful adventure.

If you already know the name Stan C. Smith these instructions are redundant. If you don't - make a list of the books he has written and start building your library. This is the 2nd book in this series and I think much better than the first. In the last book there was the necessary building of the situation, and introducing the people, and combatting the strange forces they found in other environments. While well-written (as is EVERYTHING this guy writes) it is not necessary for you to enjoy this volume. Some of the detailed background and character back stories are not re-hashed, but this book goes back to Smith's strength, and instead of dealing with forces and odd insects this book is humans dealing with people - and much more interesting. The central characters get to play to their strengths, and while the "intercession" of friendly robots is perhaps overworked, the result is a tale that move briskly, has lots of turns and surprises, and has a series of happy (albeit unexpected) mini-endings.

Holidays and summer are approaching and this is a travel or vacation companion you definitely want to take with you. There is one warning - if this is your first book by Mr. Smith - you are going to be buying others in short order, and you most definitely should.

An expose’ of human development?

We are getting closer to home here…
What I mean is that this unique team of space travellers, seeking a habitable and supportive planet to save humanity, discover small tribes of primitive peoples with varied degrees of survival instincts and a willingness to be controlled by others. Can the visiting team overcome dangerous challenges and succeed in getting cooperation for their mission?

I enjoyed Stan Smith’s focus being more on the human predicament and the development of these colonies than on the fantastic animal creatures (Mr. Smith’s forte) of other planets and novels. I can see a correlation between this story and humanity’s current battle on earth to ascend to a higher and more cooperative existence without a threat to their survival.

The freedom to speak openly, develop trust and cooperation is certainly something to smile about. Will the team and these colonies have more to smile about in their future? I recommend that you read this book and the next to find out. Stan Smith’s books are always well-written with interesting characters, quite imaginative and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed the banter with the “teacher” robots…I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.

What can I say about this book other than it is excellent. I am always astounded by the imaginative, clever stories Stan C Smith comes up with in each new book. The story follows on from the brilliant Primal Eclipse, probably best to read that book first to totally understand the story as this is a direct continuation of the tale. This time the world our heroes visit as they try to find a new home for the human race is full of regressed humans that have resorted to savagery. Added to this is a wonderful mix of characters in the form of sentient bonobos. The planet is also awash with animals familiar and ‘almost-familiar’. The author takes his characters on quite the rollercoaster ride this time round in a story crammed full of action, tension, clever science fiction and some totally superb lines from the robot contingent, you’ll see when you read them! It’s really an excellent read from start to finish and unlike anything else I’ve read.

In this second book in the Peregrine Outpost series, we find the main characters in the story bringing one of the bodies in stasis back to the ship and reanimated. That might not have been the best idea they've made. (We'll see in future sequels.)

This second world they check out has indeed become feral, from domestic animals to humans. There was a problem with the very first colony. Thus, their offspring did not have the best beginning, which led to their becoming feral.

There are now several tribes with different cultures, some more savage than others. Speech has become rudimentary which makes communication difficult for our group. They only find a few of the tribes, all of which have stolen all the parts of machinery that will let our group return to the ship. Their adventure in retrieving those parts becomes harrowing.

Mr. Smith has bit it out of the ball park again. A great read which is engaging. I love it and hope you will too.

The six human and one sentient robot team is now exploring a new world where the terraforming/repopulation effort didn't occur as planned. This time humans survived but almost all of the "teachers" didn't.

Stan examines how society might develop when all of the "adults" disappear when the humans are 4-years old. There is no one to teach them how to be civilized. This is "Island of the Flies" on a somewhat global scale.

One robot re-integrates hundreds of years later and has to try to start teaching civilization to one band while other bands continue to raid the group for whatever they currently want or need. This is the world that Seven and the others arrive in and are immediately attacked and some are captured. Their needle ship is destroyed and the gate parts are stolen!

How will they find their stolen members and all of the parts of the gate? Read the book to find out.

Feral Colony is Stan C. Smith’s second installment of the Peregrine Output series. It is fast-paced and thought-provoking, with a good measure of humor thrown in.

One of my favorite aspects of Smith’s writing is his ability to build interesting new worlds based on elements of nature we are already familiar with, imagining what it would be like if things took a slightly different path. Coratune, the world in this book, does not disappoint.

The main characters are a fun rag tag crew with very different personalties who somehow manage to work together as an effective team. And as much as I enjoy the human characters in this series, the non-human characters Hortense, Presence, and Resolve are my favorites—what a hoot!

I am excited to see what is in store for us in the next book!

Another great read from Stan! This book was engaging til the very end. Gives a complete ending (no cliffhangers) while enticing you to read the next book in the series. I managed to enjoy this one without reading the 1st book of the series. The characters mention the events from the 1st book enough to get a vague idea of what happened, but this book doesn't rely too much on events from the 1st. That said, I would recommend readings all of Stan's book, and they are probably best read in chronological order.
Feral Colony has a likeable group of well-developed characters, including some robotic ones. It introduces some interesting ideas as far as robotic intelligence and the future of human evolution.

The second book in the Peregrine Outpost series, building on the experiences the survivors went through in book one.
The first book was good, but number two is even better. The survivors find a world of savages, of what can losely be called humans, fighting among themselves, a planet that has a hot and a cold side with a narrow strip inbetween, to live on.
They also find a ten year old girl.
This book is an ingenious mix of sci-fi, space travel, and action but with a very compassionate baseline.
I would recommend reading book one before this one, but expect to read past your bedtime because you won't be able to put the book down.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Stan Smith creates worlds and situations like no one else. The world in book 2, which is again a tidally locked planet, is yet another! This second book in the series sees our protagonists witness and interact with a total breakdown of a planned human colonization from millennia before. As “feral” suggests, the descendants of the original colonists and earth animals are in various states of retrogression… for the most part. Mr. Smith is, in my opinion, one of the best imaginative fiction writers I’ve ever read. DON’T MISS OUT! Read book one, then this one. Oh and by the way, get your hands on ALL of his previous works. It’ll take you places you’ve literally never dreamed of.

This is the second book of the Peregrine Outpost series. Seven, Ember, Kami, Joshie, Vernon, and Arizona explore another planet in the hope of finding a habitable place for Earth’s 12,000 remaining survivors to establish a colony on. They get a strong and indispensable assist Presence, their large a highly advanced robot. Ottavia, a precocious and arrogant ten-year-old, is a new character added to the mix. This second book builds on the entertaining attributes of the first book: exotic settings and cultures, plenty of danger and action, and interesting main characters with developing relationships and humorous dialogue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and its def thought provoking, though I can't imagine living on a tidal locked planet like Coratune...
The planet is certainly fascinating and I'd love to see what it's like in another 500yrs. The bonobo brought in a very unexpected element to this book and I loved the battle plan. I felt sorry for Curiosity but really hope it succeeded. I'm still undecided how Patience is working out and I can't wait for them to visit Yalotune :)
I do have issues with the Turland Gates, but that's my claustrophobia talking. All up this is a read I'll be returning to more than once
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my personal review

The series continues!! Stan C Smith does not disappoint with his second installment of the Peregrine Outpost series. Loving these books and all the interesting issues that crop up during habitable plant exploration. This book lands our adventurers into a planet filled with savage humans who seem more interested in killing than anything else. It had me wondering how a more civil society forms and what forces/attitudes lead humans to develop in a more feral direction. I was on the edge of my seat! I appreciate the ways Stan uses each character’s skill set in this, and I’m growing to love this little band of misfits. On to book #3!

The world as we know it has ended. These ordinary people need to find a new one. This small group of regular folks has been given a daunting task: find a new home for the last 12,000 humans on Earth. If they fail, they die. They have already ruled out one possible planet, and they're now surveying a second in hopes that it will be better. This book tells their story as they set out to explore this second planet in hopes of saving humanity. There is action, suspense, tragedy, and a bit of romance sprinkled in. A really riveting read.

GET READY FOR AN ALLNIGHTER!!!!!!!

What an interesting and fun survival tale. Stan Smith takes us into a not very nice future with great characters and an unusual problem. The cast of heroes have the task of what they believe is to save the human race. As they race across the universe, they find that the human race has made it to different worlds but in the process have become things that are very dangerous and frequently not easily recognizable as human.

Don't miss this unique story about mankind's last attempt at continued survival.

Book #2 and I could not put it down. There was a part that got me teary eyed and a part I literally laughed out loud. Course I won't share cause I want you to read the book. Looking forward to book #3 when it comes out. Want to see what happens to the characters and robots going to try another planet to find a place to call home not only for themselves but for the 12,000 still sleeping. Will the next planet be the next one to save them? What will they encounter next?

I didn’t think the author could out do the first book in series, but he sure did. Kept me wondering how our heros could survive and overcome the dire situations and obstacles they kept encountering. Having finished this book, I am anxious to read the next in series. A riveting story really hard to put down.

I was given an ARC copy of this book by the author, but am voluntarily posting an honest review.

This is an amazing piece of rollercoaster action writing. we still have the complete ships company at the moment +1 and what a brat she is.
We now arrive at planet 2 on the list and this is were our idea of normality ends.
Unfortunately there is to many spoilers to carry on writing this review , but what I will say if you haven't read book 1 go and do it and return to this absolutely brilliant book.
Totally recommended.

Action packed adventure with great characters who have you pulling for them to succeed from the first chapter. Of course, the author makes sure to let the characters make progress only to set them back again and again. He does not let the reader turn away for even a second. I enjoyed the humor and the conflict between the crew, but when the chips are down they do what it takes to help each other survive. The story is futuristic, but not unbelievable. A great read.

Another awesome planet to survive

Traveling through Turland gates and needle ships, the group will try to survive . This planet has sunlight only in the center but for 24 hours in a day. There are different types of humanoid and for the most part are rather violent.
The gate parts are taken and traded to other tribes and the story revolves around the retrieval of them.
Quite an inventive story of home mankind evolves on other planets in certain situations. Pretty good

Another exciting and fun adventure

Stan Smith always creates wild and exciting stories and this is no exception. We continue to get to know the characters from the first book and they get to shine. It sucks for the characters but as a reader it's really fun to see their plans fail and then they have to come up with new plans.

Seven, Ember, Josh, Arizona, Kami, Vernon and Presence continue their mission to find the most habitable terraformed planet to try to save the human race. They find the unexpected on Coratune, much of it bad but some of it not so bad. Their adventures, missteps and triumphs are chronicled in this second installment of the series. Hard to put down! Great characters!

Another Winner in the Peregrine Outpost Space Colonization Series

A worthy successor to Primal Eclipse. It goes without saying that it still has the same quality writing and interesting story line as Stan C. Smith’s other books.
