Korynn Newville is an artist, designer, and environmental activist.
Korynn’s drawings and passion for the environment are the catalysts that lead to her writing. Her book, “Indiscernible Elements” derives from her architectural thesis work on how architecture needs to practice with living and dying and can no longer draw, design and think from only a human perspective. Which has been nominated for the Schiff Foundation Fellowship Award.
This book is about the element calcium. I wasn’t great at chemistry in middle school, but I still thought it’s interesting. I know at least that calcium is in milk 😁
The book was a very quick read. It mostly just had one sentence on a page and the book is just 79 pages long. Later on in the book it had more text, which cleared up the obsession with calcium for the writer. A lot of pages are handwritten and weren’t all that clear to read unfortunately. But I blame my ereader for that!
The art in book was beautiful. A lot of surrealistic art. Also a bit dark. I like dark books 😁.
The story is about calcium. How important it is and what it does voor human beings. It is written in a very poetic way. I always thought that calcium was just in the human body. But now I know, because of the book, that it also is in thing like stone. It’s in everything, to build and grow. But also in death. In cemetery stones for example. The art shows how important calcium is.
It wasn’t really a book for me. But if you like chemistry, poetry and surrealistic art you absolutely gonna love this small book! I would recommend the fysical book, because some thing were a bit unclear on my ereader. And I think it would also be more beautiful then, because some pages overlap and make huge awesome art. An ereader doesn’t show that too well. It was a very unique book. I’ve never read anything like this. I think I will never forget this one.
Indiscernible Elements: Calcium is an ode to one of nature's versatile elements. Calcium is an essential element in living and nonliving things and can create structures and objects that we use every day. Written in verse from the point of view of Calcium itself, Calcium explores the ever present cycles of life and death, change, growth and rebirth. Accompanied by original artwork by the author, Indiscernible Elements: Calcium gives a unique view into an element that we often take for granted. While not exactly what I expected from a book about calcium, it was an insightful and interesting look into Calcium.

indiscernible elements: Calcium by Korynn Newville is currently scheduled for release on May 30 2023. This book explores the path a molecule can take through various stages of life and death - from the perspective of Calcium itself. Through the use of detailed illustrations, poetry, and dialogue, author Korynn Newville creates a discussion around how humans can change the way they create the built environment to be more conscious of the wondrous systems at work in nature. If the same Calcium in a femur bone can be used in concrete to build a cathedral, a house, a sidewalk or can be recycled by a nearby plant or tree, how can humans purposefully help that process along? What would Calcium design if it had the choice? What would Calcium say if it could tell you its story.
indiscernible elements: Calcium is a book that I think will play better on paper than on a screen. I thought it was an intriguing idea, and results in a very interesting and unique book. The blend of notes, science, and poetry was well balanced and provides readers exactly what the description promises. I think it will speak to readers that really enjoy poetry and looking at things in our world from a different perspective. Since I was reading this book on a screen, that did not allow for zooming in and getting a better look at the details, I do have to say that the white on black notes and details were sometimes hard for me to see well enough to actually enjoy rather than squinting and puzzling out the words or intent. Also, while I do enjoy and appreciate poetry I think this was just a little more esoteric than I typically chose for my pleasure reading.
Thank you so much to Black Château Enterprises for providing me a copy for my review!
This poem collection could not have come at a better time for me. In the last month, my family has been going through grief. Reading the beautiful words Newville wrote brought me an unexpected feeling of comfort. I love the way this collections flows, reminding the reader that even in the after we continue to have a part in this world. As a debut novel, it was great. The writing was mostly fluid. There were a few lines that I felt didn’t quite read as easily, but nothing to complain too much about. I was able to read the full novel in one sitting. The drawing were fascinating. I hope some of them will be available in print form. Overall this poem collection is an introspective and fascinating read.
A visually captivating read that taught me a lot about calcium and its importance. The artwork in the book was really pretty and overall, I enjoyed the aesthetic of the book.
