From the USA Today Bestselling author J.D. Hollyfield comes a devilishly spicy, enemies-to-lovers romance about overcoming the past, undeniable attraction, and finding love in the untimeliest of ways.
A best friend, a stalker, and a bodyguard walk into a bar…
Current status: Living my best life. *Flips hair* What more could a girl want?
Just kidding.
My life has gone to shit. All the fun, late nights, and single life come to a screeching halt when I find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, thanks to my overbearing best friend, I’ve adopted a guard dog to keep me safe until they find the guy who attacked me.
Insert Tate Deveraux, my newest inconvenience. He’s brawny, not bad on the eyes, and a pain in my ass. Not only am I stuck with him until I’m out of danger, but he’s moving in with me.
He’s become a nuisance in my life and needs to go—stalker be damned. So do the urges to strip him naked and see if the rumors about hand size hold true. I blame my crush on booze and the kiss that should have never happened.
The simmering attraction between us is undeniable, but he’s made it clear I’m just a job. With lines being crossed and my life at stake, I guess I’ll find out if he’s better at keeping me safe or sated.
***THIS IS A STANDALONE NOVEL that interconnects with POWER by J.D. Hollyfield. You do not need to read POWER to enjoy Hatemates, but it is always preferred to get the full experience! Enjoy! ***

This has got to be my favorite JD Hollyfield novel this far. And I know I say that with every one I read but this… THIS was great! I loved how the couple got together, the witty banter between them had me giggling. Those coffee mugs were hilarious! I also really enjoyed how everything played out! If you don’t read anything else- check out this super cute and funny forced proximity rom- com!
Mindy works two jobs just to pay the rent. One at a bar, one on the sets of low level movies. It's thanks to one of those jobs that's she's found herself the target of a menacing threat. Cue her best friend and her man "to the rescue". Now she's got a roommate she doesn't want or doesn't like, who is supposedly there to protect her. But from what she can tell, all Tate is doing is annoying the hell out of her and driving her (and her body) nuts. Eventually, the two will have to give into their obvious chemistry, despite their outward contempt.
Tate's got a long list of issues. He doesn't think he's at all the man for anything but doing his job until his newest assignment brings a sassy, independent woman who has as many issues as he does, into his life. Now he's trying to protect someone for whom he actually has feelings. He knows better than to let them cloud his mind while on the job, but he can't seem to help but fall for Mindy, even though he has no intention of doing anything about those feelings. Even when danger comes closer, all he intends is to protect her, not promise her commitment or anything...
These two are fire! The way they snarked at each other was so obviously just a cover for their attraction, and it was inevitable that it wouldn't be long before they gave into that attraction. And when they did it was so delicious. I wanted to hug each of them, though, because their individual baggage was so heavy that they couldn't just fall in love and live in happiness without so many obstacles. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes because of stories like HateMates - all the tension and the when will they give in, the hiding of feelings, and the sparks when they finally admit their feelings aren't contempt any longer - so much fun, so yummy, and the heartfelt relief when they emerge on the other side in love. Mindy and Tate are one of my favorite enemies to lovers couples, I wish J.D. would write a whole series about just them.
Such a fun Rom-Com. Hatemates by JD Hollyfield is a standalone with connections to her previous book Power. To get the most out of this book and to really appreciate Theo, I totally advise you to read that first. This is a steamy enemies to lovers romance between Tate Deveraux and Mindy Parks. These two are very strong characters so they were always going to clash. While their relationship develops we get a thrilling suspense when her stalker refuses to give up. Will Tate be able to keep things professional and protect her? Can Mindy overcome the past and accept the love she deserves?
Mindy works at a bar and to help pay the bills she works on low-level movies. She used to enjoy it but recent events have made her consider leaving and getting a more stable job. She wants more out of life and is fed up with being broke and feeling a failure. To make matters worse she has had three deliveries of roses to work, each with a creepy and scary note.
After work one nigh there is an incident but luckily someone comes to her rescue. Her best friend Fay and her fiancee Theo, rush to the hospital. Fay is over protective of Mindy and worries about her safety so Theo wants to employ a bodyguard for her. Fay knows Mindy doesn’t like or need help from anyone and is strong and independent but convinces her to accept Theo’s help. I loved how Mindy constantly calls Theo bossy and tells him off for interfering, she doesn’t stand for any of his nonsense and taunts him. I found some of his threats so amusing.
Tate works as a personal bodyguard and will keep her safe and live with her until the stalker is caught. Mindy doesn't want a roommate especially a super hot giant of a man. At first Tate comes across as emotionless and lacking in personality but she quickly develops crush on her broody companion. Tate is ex military and very professional so although he is attracted to her, he reminds himself she is just a job. As they get to know each other the attraction and chemistry between them is undeniable but could they cross the line? Tate is determined to resist the feelings he has for her because he must protect her in case her stalker comes back to finish what he started.
Until Mindy met Fay, she believed the only person she could count on was herself. Now Tate has flipped her whole world upside down and managed to break down her walls. Their antics and banter made me laughs much, especially her funny mugs. The steamy scenes when they give into the temptation are good. They both have issues which means they find it hard to trust and open up so it was lovely when she finally told him about her childhood and the traumas she went through and he reveals his heartbreaking past.
My heart went out to Tate as he agonised over what to do when he couldn’t resist her anymore. Neither think they deserve the other and it was great how he shows her she wasn’t alone and could accept help. He worked hard convincing her she was a better person than she showed people and she could go after the things she wanted. The twist and revelations at the end were surprising and unexpected. It was wonderful how Tate shows Mindy the way love could be and was so devoted to her. A very entertaining read which I throughly enjoyed. Loved the romantic ending and hope we get more from both these couples.
Filled with enticing suspence, A+ banter, hilarious laugh-out-loud moments, smoldering hot sexy times, and an HEA that just made my heart melt... this story had me glued to the page and craving MORE! I seriously couldn't get enough of these two Hatemates!
Mindy Parks is a wild and carefree type of gal who's had to learn from an early age how to survive on her own. Though her life is far from the fairy tale she once envisioned, she's a feisty, stubborn, and fiercely independent young woman who's been doing the best she can while living her best single gal life. Well, that is until one obsessed stalker makes her the object of his twisted fantasies. With her safety in jeopardy, her sweet yet overbearing bestie enlists the help of a bodyguard despite her objections. Only what's a gal to do when her new guard dog is ruggedly handsome, broody, dominant, and has Mindy daring to cross the line as their attraction only grows stronger the more time they spend together. Will Mindy become just another job or will Tate be the man who can not only protect her from harm but protect her heart as well....
This book was such a wild and crazy fun ride! From the moment they meet, Mindy and Tate just pushed each other's buttons in the best possible way and I was so HERE FOR IT! Everything from their hilarious and fiery banter, creative coffee mug lingo, sexy tension, to the danger factor that leaves you on edge just waiting to see what happens next...just chef's 💋💋💋💋
Now there’s nothing I love more than a sexy protective alpha male and Tate Deveraux certainly fit the bill! Though he's stoic, curt, and can be a frustrating brute at times, he was always the calm to Mindy's brand of crazy. I really loved him in the moments he could be so swoony, gentle, and attentive with Mindy. He might have been the protective grump to her quirky ray of sunshine but he's one hot bodyguard who definitely stole my heart!
It's been a while since I've read a book in one sitting and I literally did not want to put this one down! It's the type of story you can't stop reading because you're enjoying it so freaking much! This was some grumpy sunshine, strangers to lovers, to romantic suspense AWESOMENESS! Seriously, get this gem on your TBR NOW! It's one crazy fun ride you definitely won't want to miss!

"HateMates" by J.D. Hollyfield is a tantalizing enemies-to-lovers romance that keeps readers on the edge of their seats with its blend of humor, steamy encounters, and unexpected twists.
The story follows Mindy, whose life takes a drastic turn after she becomes the target of an attack. Forced to adopt a guard dog for protection, she finds herself stuck with Tate Deveraux, a rugged and aggravating bodyguard who disrupts her already tumultuous life even further by moving in with her.
J.D. Hollyfield crafts a narrative filled with witty banter and electric chemistry between Mindy and Tate. Despite their initial animosity towards each other, sparks fly as they navigate their complicated relationship, with forbidden desires simmering beneath the surface.
As the tension between them mounts, Mindy grapples with conflicting emotions, torn between her attraction to Tate and her determination to maintain her independence. The dynamic between the two characters is both entertaining and heartfelt, as they confront their pasts and discover unexpected connections.
With its engaging storyline and well-developed characters, "HateMates" is a standalone novel that seamlessly intertwines with J.D. Hollyfield's previous work, "Power," providing readers with a rich and immersive reading experience. Whether you're a fan of enemies-to-lovers romances or simply enjoy a captivating story filled with humor and passion, "HateMates" is sure to leave you thoroughly entertained.
Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this book can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. Readers may be surprised to not get Tate’s POV until several chapters in, but that allows us to fully understand Mindy’s character and I believe it was important to the book. As a spin-off from Power, Fay and Theo play an important role in this book and readers will have maximum enjoyment by reading Power first (even though it is not necessary to enjoy HateMates). Mindy is Fay’s best friend. She is vibrant, fearless, and determined to succeed in a world stacked against her. When she gets attacked, Fay and Theo insist she have a bodyguard. Enter Tate. He is big, brooding ex-military and loaded down with his own baggage. They have many hurdles to overcome on the way to their happy ending. They each have baggage. Mindy’s not-so-nice follower presents big problems. There is danger and amazing banter along the way. The chemistry between the characters burns bright, and hot times are both spicy and unavoidable. I love how Tate wants to give Mindy every opportunity for a brighter future, even if he doesn’t believe he belongs in it. Mindy is witty and stronger than she realizes. I loved how she brings Tate through his own growth while envisioning a different future for herself than she believed possible. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read filled with clever banter, hot times, danger, and emotional growth. This author just keeps getting better and this is my new favorite book of hers. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
Mindy is a soft-core porn actress and bartender just living her life until the night she’s attacked leaving work. Luckily, a good Samaritan intervened, but it was a really close call. Now her bestie, Fay, wants Mindy to quit her jobs and move in, which just aren’t options, so Fay’s fiancée hires a bodyguard instead. Mindy is vehemently against this arrangement since she’s fiercely independent and also because she thinks it’s crazy overkill, but no matters what she does, she can’t get rid of Tate.
It soon becomes clear that Mindy has a stalker, and the attempted attack wasn’t an isolated incident so she should be happy to have protection, but he’s just hard to take. The two immediately butt heads but there’s also an undeniable mutual attraction complicating their strange new professional arrangement and it’s only a matter of time before they give in. Tate can’t get involved with a client. He needs to be professional and focused, yet he can’t keep his hands off of her.
Mindy has the same problem. Everything about this man drives her crazy but she can’t resist him at all (nor does she want to). Her acerbic wit and Tate’s ability to make her furious lead to some great banter and a lot of steam. There’s a little whodunit and a lot of will they/won’t they and I enjoyed it very much.
I'm feeling nothing but love for Hatemates, J.D. Hollyfield's newest standalone and a companion novel to a previous standalone, Power. While you could most certainly read and fully enjoy this latest book without having read anything prior to it, I do highly recommend you check out Power first and then Hatemates because the main characters from the former feature prominently in the latter, and the female main character in the latter is a supporting character in the former. In short, just go and read both novels!
This is an enemies-to-lovers romantic suspense read, and boy, oh boy, did I enjoy the heck out of the romance, the suspense, and everything else in between. Twenty-four-year-old bartender Mindy Parks finds herself stuck with thirty-two-year-old bodyguard Tate Deveraux, but that's better than being stuck with a stalker who's become increasingly dangerous. She can't stand him, and she gets on his nerves, but being in close proximity to each other 24/7 has them crossing a line that could cost Tate his job and Mindy her life.
So. Much. Tension! I swear, I could snack on all that zinging I could feel in the air whenever Mindy and Tate were in each other's space, which was quite often. Mindy was a strong woman who didn't let anyone steamroll her, but she also had to come to terms with the reality of her stalker situation. And Tate? Gah! The man was just...yum! All the bickering was the best kind of foreplay. Fay and Theo were perfect peripheral characters, too. There was romance, suspense, humor, and all the feels. Five stars for Hatemates!
"A best friend, a stalker, and a bodyguard walk into a bar…" What could possibly go wrong? Right? Hang onto your seats because this is quite the bumpy ride to Tate and Mindy's HEA.
Hatemates is an angsty, entertaining, unpredictable, suspenseful, heartbreaking, twisted, and steamy contemporary romance that will keep you entertained with its witty banter, steamy goodness, action, and unpredictability. You'll be guessing till the very end!
The characters are The main characters are damaged and have a lot of hang-ups and baggage from their pasts. They're forced into close proximity when Tate moves in with Mindy so that he can keep an eye on her. They instantly clash. But, the more time they spend together, the more they spar, the more the sparks start to fly until the attraction they tried to deny comes crashing to the surface and nothing will ever be the same.
This book was so awesome! I loved the suspense and banter. The heartfelt emotions touched my heart. The action and suspense kept me turning the pages as fast as I could and unable to put it down. Tate's alpha, dominant ways were so hot! Que the swoon! Mindy was funny and strong, but inside, she was a little broken. They were both inspirational. I loved Theo and Faye. They were so supportive and protective. This put my heart through the wringer, but it was mended in the end by the beautiful HEA. This is standalone within a series. I highly recommend reading the first book for maximum reading enjoyment, but it is not necessary.
𝒻𝒶𝓋ℴ𝓇𝒾𝓉ℯ 𝒬𝓊ℴ𝓉ℯ: I’ve never known what it’s like to need somebody so f#cking bad it hurts. The way it keeps a man up at night aching for something he can’t have.
*Have you read a book by J.D. Hollyfield? What comes to mind when you read one of her books? Think about something that’s so outrageous, hysterically funny, sassy, sarcastic banter and you will have yourself a Hollyfield rom-com. An enemies-to-lovers romance that will have you devouring every page. Mindy and Tate will have you belly laughing with Mindy’s sassy, sarcastic, smart witted mouth and Tate’s quick reactions and comebacks make for the perfect combination. The repartee between these two characters will have you chuckling and possibly letting out a snort or two. Not only do you get a guaranteed happily ever after but you also get an unpredictable book full of suspense, dramatic moments, romance, and hot sexy scenes sure to make your panties melt.
Mindy, the porn star/bartender, has a new roommate in the form of a bodyguard. When a late night walk to her car finds her getting attacked by a stranger, her best friend enlists her fiancé to hire a bodyguard. The moment Mindy meets Tate it’s a full on love/hate relationship. Lines get crossed and what once was an unfriendly partnership becomes a heated attraction that unmistakably makes for a messy combo.
Hatemates had it all, from humour and wit to angst, some super hot spice, and then some seriously messed up moments too. The author took me on a journey with this book as Mindy let down her walls and let Tate in, putting not only her heart on the line but her life too. It was a brilliant, yet sometimes infuriating, read.
When Mindy is attacked and it becomes apparent she has a stalker, her best friend Fay gets her boyfriend to hire a bodyguard, Tate. Much to Mindy’s chagrin. The close proximity forces their relationship to develop, but it’s not all smooth sailing, and with the stalker becoming more unhinged, there were some pretty epic bumps in the road. I loved the twists and turns that surrounded the whole stalking storyline.
Mindy is such a contradiction of a character. She’s snappy and snarky and comes across as an utter b*tch, and I loved her for her witty remarks, but as the book progresses, it becomes clear that’s just a shield in order to protect herself from getting hurt again. There are some moments where she shows real vulnerability, and my heart hurts for her. Tate has his own demons and comes across as grumpy and overbearing, often pushing all of Mindy’s buttons, but the push-pull of their relationship worked so well, riling each other up until it became an explosive, passionate moment.
This was great! The banter was witty, Tate and Mindy were well-developed characters, and it had a plot twist I didn't expect.
After Mindy is attacked after work one night, her best friend, Fay, and her billionaire fiance, Theo, insist on hiring her a bodyguard. At first, Mindy starts out as just another protection job for Tate. And she wants nothing to do with the broody, quiet, giant who she's being forced to be roommates with. She's used to not having anyone in her corner and surprises even herself when she finds herself softening towards the brute. Soon, their physical attraction leads to an emotional connection, but just as Tate and Mindy hit a crossroads regarding the future of any relationship between them, the unthinkable happens and she is abducted.
I really enjoyed the progress of this story, and how it unfolded. There was a lot of emotional growth on Tate's part, and they both became better versions of themselves when they were together as a team.
Having not previously read Power, I'm sure I would have benefitted from knowing Mindy as a side character in that story, and appreciated her friendship with Fay even more. But I don't think not knowing that story took anything away from my enjoyment of Tate and Mindy's romance because I adored their story.
I've only read one other book by JD Hollyfield before this, which I also enjoyed, so I will definitely be checking out books from her in the future!
I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily left a review.
"Hatemates" by JD Hollyfield is a thrilling blend of romance and suspense. It features a feisty, hardworking female lead Mindy who is paired with a hot, former military bodyguard named Tate. The chemistry between these two is palpable, making for a steamy and compelling read.
Mindy is an admirable character, juggling multiple jobs to make a living. When she finds herself the target of a stalker, her best friend's fiance, Theo, hires Tate to be her personal bodyguard. Tate is all business, intent on doing his job and keeping Mindy safe. However, the undeniable chemistry between them creates a delicious tension that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
Despite the serious situation, Hollyfield manages to infuse the story with humor and heart, making it more than just a suspenseful romance. The dynamic between Mindy and Tate is entertaining and keeps you rooting for them until the very end.
"Hatemates" is a well-crafted, engaging read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are well-developed, the plot is compelling, and the chemistry between Tate and Mindy is off the charts. I highly recommend "Hatemates" for anyone in search of a romance with a dash of suspense and a whole lot of heat.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

🩵 forced proximity 🖤bodyguard/ law enforcement 🩵 strangers to lovers 🖤alpha hero 🩵grumpy sunshine 🖤lots of banter
Gosh!! I absolutely devoured this book. This is a standalone, although the characters, do interconnect with the authors previous book, Power you can absolutely read as stand alone. This is Tate and Mindy’s story
The FMC, Mindy, has had a pretty rough go of it since her parents died when she was 13. After foster care, and her foster parents swindled her out of her parents inheritance, she’s been broke n on her own. Working two jobs, one in soft porn and as a bartender. Strange flowers start arriving at work n her apt. Then she is attacked.
The MMC, Tate, is an ex military, now working in private sector, as a body guard. Tate is hired by Theo ( who we met in Power along with Fay) to protect Mindy until her attacker is caught.. this also means staying with her in her 1 bedroom apartment.
I absolutely adored Mindy and Tates story. They had such good banter and at times had me laughing at their snark. They both had emotional scars from there past and were afraid to open their hearts up. Now add in some steam and add in some drama of the stalker and this book had it all. Another hit from Jessica.
A super steamy enemies to lovers rom com, with a splash of romantic suspense thrown in and you've got the latest hit from author JD Hollyfield.
To say Mindy has had a craptastic life is an understatement, but she's still fighting and surviving. Fay is her bestest friend in the whole world and engaged to the ever broody Theo. So, after she is attacked one night after work, to please his fiancee, Theo hires Tate to be her bodyguard and private security. Oh, did I mention he was moving in with her? Mindy is less than thrilled and shows it every single step of the way.
These two have chemistry for dayssss and when they finally give in and cross that line, whoa! I thought my kindle would combust lol. But Tate trying to be the ever professional, keeps trying to remind himself she's just a job. Luckily for us, he keeps forgetting that part as well lol. The banter between these two are everything. From Mindy's quippy comments all the way down to her coffee mug collection lol. Overall, I enjoyed the crap out of this one. I will admit Mindy was a little over the top at times and I wanted to punch her several times, but there is nothing better than some hate sex wink wink! Grab this one today and enjoy a good laugh, great friends, and a hot bodyguard who gets sucked into watching reality tv lol.
• Thoughts: I was pretty disappointed in this book. I wanted to love it, but I just didn't. Now don't get me wrong. I am so glad I read it. I love reading new to me authors. I will give another book a chance by this author for sure. The banter had me laughing so hard!! The come backs that Mindy had was hilarious. That part of the book I adored. The parts of the book I was not a fan of was the chemistry between the main characters. I don't feel they had much of a chemistry. I mean other than the schmexy chemistry, sure. I felt that is where the chemistry ends. They barely talk. There was also a ton of back and forth for me. Lots of I am angry with you, let's have schmexy time, she is vulnerable and tells him how she feels he rejects her she deflects and puts her walls up and pushes him away. I felt their relationship was rather childish.
So for me, this was not the best book I have read. But like I said. I am glad I read it. I will give this author another shot and read something else.
I'm a sucker for a good bodyguard romance, add in some hate sex and stalker drama and I'm hooked. Mindy hasn't had it easy, losing both her parents as a kid and entering into the foster care system. Tate is ex-military with a record and doesn't think he deserves nice things in life. When Mindy gets attacked on her way home from work, Tate is hired to protect her.
This book was SPICY. J.D. wasted no time getting to the good stuff, but the plot was really solid too. I do have a hard time when characters give their protection details a hard time, but Mindy was way too entertaining to be mad at. I mean, we need someone to be disgruntled right? Tate was the perfect alpha MMC and he can boss me around anytime. I thought the stalker/danger aspect was handled really well, but I wasn't that surprised when the bad guy was unmasked. That's more on me than the story.
This was a pretty quick read and I enjoyed it a lot! If you're looking for a sassy FMC who gives the MMC a hard time, but he's still obsessed with her, this is perfect for you.
This is a steamy enemies to lovers romance between Tate and Mindy . These two together was just perfect, seeing them struggle and grow was really great.
Mindy works at a bar and works on low-level movies(soft porn). She’s really over it but needs the money to pay her bills, but once she starts receiving flowers and creepy notes from an unknown person, things are really starting to make her uneasy. While leaving working she was almost attacked b but luckily someone stepped in and helped.
So now she’s forced to take her stalker serious and step one is letting her best friend Fay and her fiancee Theo hire her a bodyguard for her. Tate is hired as her personal bodyguard but of course Mindy doesn't one, and tried to fire him basically daily. At first Tate comes across as mean and lacking emotions. As they spend time together( because he won’t let her fire him) the attraction and chemistry between them is undeniable, now they have to decide if they are going to act on their feeling or not.
Honestly, there are a few plot twist and I just love Fay and Tate wanting to help Mindy as much as possible!
I liked how protective Tate was of Mindy. I know it started out as his job but they quickly became more than just bodyguard/client. I liked how he taught her different self-defense moves too. I didn't like how Mindy's boss at the studio acted after she was assaulted, he could have been more sympathetic to her. I thought it was funny how Mindy kept "firing" Tate but he refused to leave her. I also liked how she asked him if he had ever felt this way about any other clients and his response. “Have you ever—?” “Felt this way about a client? No.” “Oh…” “But that talk is for another day—when she’s not my client. Until then, it’s business as usual.” “You have a tough job." “My client’s quite difficult. Doesn’t listen and is very, very defiant. She’s also smart. Funny. Strong. And absolutely gorgeous.” The only thing that felt a bit off about the story was how quickly the two of them hooked up. I feel like it was a bit of a stretch but I still enjoyed the book. Overall it was a good book and I enjoyed reading it. Thank you to J.D. Hollyfield and The Author Agency for the advanced copy.
This book was full of banter, snarky comebacks, and so much sexual tension! Oh and let's not forget the tequila, tacos and Jorge the mechanical bull.
Tropes i love: ☕️ : forced proximity ☕️ : A+ Banter ☕️ : alpha hero ☕️ : grumpy x sunshine ☕️ : emotional scars
Mindy depends on herself. She's been let down and her trust has been severely broken in the past. So when Tate comes along, she has a hard time letting him help protect her. She fights tooth and nail to get her way, but Tate isn't going anywhere.
The tension, the suspense, the love that develops is top notch. I loved Fay's love and support of Mindy, she would have literally burned the world down for her. Mindy was an easy character to like, she had snark for days and whitty comebacks that made even grumpy Tate smile.
Tate has lived for himself and only himself for as long as he can remember. His emotional scars run very deep and while he is 100% on board with protecting Mindy, letting himself feel the feelings he has is tough.
Both have been let down, but together they can move past those scars and mend the hurt along the way, but not before a little suspense and angst first!
“Fine, what do I call you?” His lips lower. “How about mine?”
Review: 4.5/5 ⭐️ Steam: 3.5/5 🔥
Tate and Mindy bring all the feels. There are times you’re laughing, then mad, annoyed and on the edge of your seat. Mindy is a stubborn pain in the ass, but you want to be her when you grow up (minus the adult film star thing). She’s strong and independent and does what she has to do to survive. This girl doesn’t take handouts and would rather do anything else than have someone tell her what to do.
Tate is hired to protect her after she’s attacked and has a stalker. He refuses to listen to her constant firing him but also wants nothing more than to protect her. She might get under his skin but he’s still drawn to her. He makes it his mission to keep her safe in every possible way.
@authorjdhollyfield did a great job with the character development, the story and keeping you entertained. I flew through this book in a little over a day. I definitely recommend if you want a book with romance, suspense, broody body guards and a stubborn FMC.
✨ I received this book as an ARC for my honest review✨

"I may be an ex-porn star and tequila-drinking bada*s with a trucker mouth, but I still have morals." - Mindy
What a rollercoaster. The back and forth with Mindy and Tate, combined with a stalker, were what kept me hooked till the end.
Mindy is my spirit animal. I loved her trucker mouth, and the witty comebacks had me rolling! Tate loved making her life difficult and getting a rise out of her, but no matter what he dished, Mindy matched it, plus some.
I loved that Mindy called Tate out on his BS. Mindy should have made him grovel more as well. I do wish we had more of an emotional connection between them. With everything that happened, it seemed that they mainly got together due to the situation only. I wish we had an epilogue to see them further down the line once everything calmed down.
Man, I wish I could give more than five stars! I could NOT put this book down! If you’ve read this author since the beginning, you can really tell how much she’s grown in her writing. Hatemates did NOT disappoint!!
If you haven’t read Power, that’s ok, but I do recommend you read that first. If you have read Power, then you’ll know that Mindy is the heroine’s best friend. I have so much love for the friendship between Mindy and Fay, and how Theo will do ANYTHING for either of them. But, I regress.
So! In Hatemates, we find that Miss Mindy has a special friend who likes to worship her from afar. When her life starts getting complicated, Theo hires a beefy security guard to watch over Mindy. I’ll bet you can see where this is going, right!?
The back and forth between Mindy and Tate, it was 😳🥵🔥. You just need to see how high the tension was for yourself! So yeah, I HIGHLY recommend you read Hatemates. You will definitely not regret it!!
Mindy finds herself with a stalker and her best friend cannot stand the idea of anything happening to Mindy. The best friend convinces her boyfriend to get a bodyguard for Mindy. Tate is the silent broody, always there bodyguard hired to protect Mindy. The tension between these two is off the charts even if they can’t stand each other.
Having to wait until 50% for Tate’s POV?! Not cool! I wanted it from the start. But I do think it added to the character building. I loved how sassy and sarcastic Mindy is. It is part of her mask and shield but it made me love and relate to her. Both Tate and Mindy have their reasons for being reluctant to move into a relationship and leaning their past was beautiful.
I knew this story was about a bodyguard but when it starts with the humor and sass from Mindy I was not expecting it to really have the suspense that it did! I loved it. Was it maybe a little predictable, sure. But I could not stop reading!
I laughed so hard at the things that came out of Mindy's mouth! I couldn't help but love her character. Then there's Tate ... who wouldn't love a hunk with the protective gene? I didn't get why he thought that he wasn't relationship material. The chemistry between Mindy and Tate was off the charts ... they just couldn't keep their hands off each other. Even though Mindy has a stalker, the book is fun and entertaining, but then the book takes on a whole different vibe ... it almost felt like two different books.
After Mindy got attacked, her best friend is worried about her and has her rich fiancé hire a bodyguard to make sure Mindy's safe until her attacker is caught. Tate is ex-military and built like a tank ... who better to protect Mindy. There's only one problem ... Mindy has a smart mouth and Tate is having a hard time resisting her.

I was so happy to read the story of Mindy and Tate!
I fell hard for Mindy when I got a glimpse of her in Power. Now this story can be read as a standalone, but do yourself a favor and read both!
Mindy is a dynamo! She is fierce, she is loyal and she has had some major speed bumps on her road of life. She uses sarcasm and humor to get through the hard times and when things get rocky for her, her BFF comes through in a way that shakes her world.
Enter Tate, bodyguard extraordinaire, he too is fierce in his job and takes all that Mindy throws at him.
When lines get blurry and feelings come to the front, their relationship is white hot and explosive.
You get laughs, heart, heat, and oh my the suspense and thrills. You are going to be on the edge of your seat and when you don't expect it, BAM! Read this story and you will know what I am saying!
Generally a good story. It was hard to get the sense that Tate was attracted to Mindy-- the author did leave subtle hints via his behaviour, but there weren't many of them. We also didn't get a chapter from his POV until halfway through the book. I was able to guess the baddie fairly early on, but we didn't learn what started his obsession until much later in the book.
Because of the lack of apparent chemistry in the early chapters (because we were getting practically nothing from Tate), the first sex scene seemed kind of sudden, especially since they had unprotected sex without having a safer sex discussion either before or after it happened. I'm not asking for a lengthy discussion scene, just a couple of lines acknowledging they're clean/she's on birth control/whatever would suffice.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Goodness this one was a roller coaster ride for sure. But in the best of ways. I absolutely loved this book they way it had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end oh you guys it is amazing. The suspense of trying to figure out who is after Mindy and who has pit her through so much horrible danger will have you reading so fast and trying to block out the world to get to the end and see what happens. The intensity that jumps off the pages between Tate and Mindy my gosh will threaten to set your kindle on fire it’s scorching hot. I lived that we get a glimpse of Theo and Fay who we loved in the previous book Power. This one you guys i know I said Fay and Theo were my favorite but I must say Tate and Mindy just stole my heart they are my absolute favorite. I can’t recommend this book enough it’s is a definite must read a must buy for darn sure.
When Mindy draws the attention of the wrong person at one of the jobs she works, her friends are determined to protect her even if she doesn’t agree. She now finds herself living with the Tate, the bodyguard they have arranged, who is not only infuriating but enticing as well.
Tate has never had any difficulty separating his feelings from his job but there is something about Mindy that is testing every resolve he has. She knows exactly what to do and say to get a rise out of time and now the biggest challenge appears to be trying to maintain the divide between personal and professional.
I enjoyed the evolution of each of these characters as they opened their hearts to love and trust each other. The interactions between them were humorous and the chemistry is intense as they take us quite the ride.
Mindy has her life together, or at least so she says. Who would have thought that everything would change in the blink of her eyes. Secret Admirer? Stalker? Danger? Roommate from hell??
Everything changes for her one night after an attack while on her way to her car. Little does she know that this is going to change everything for her. Her new roommate makes her CRAZY!!!
He starts to interfere with where she goes, what she does, how she gets there ….. he tries to take over her entire life. He will be lucky if she doesn’t kill him the way things are going. However, he is also there to be a shoulder she can lean on, a support when things get tough, and yet makes her want to scream!
What is going to happen next?? Will she be ok? Will she handle the roommate without killing him? Will she make it without going crazy?
