Etre déçue par Pierre Benoît, mon auteur préféré, qui l'eût dit !! Et pourtant, c'est possible avec Alberte... Non qu'il faille le ciel lumineux du Liban ou le Soleil de Minuit des confins de la Chine pour faire briller le talent de ce grand auteur... Non, Pierre Benoît a montré, avec Melle de la Ferté, qu'il savait situer un excellent roman au fond de la province française la plus reculée... Seulement, avec Alberte, ça ne marche pas. La jeunesse privée d'affection auprès d'un père, receveur des finances veuf, puis le mariage arrangé avec le chargé d'affaires dudit, là encore sans sentiment, la léthargie du personnage principal jusqu'à ce que sa fille intelligente et active ramène son fiancé, un séduisant ingénieur, et là le coup de foudre et l'éveil des sens de l'héroïne... non, ça ne prend pas, pas davantage quand le bel ingénieur organise l'accident mortel de la fille avec la complicité de la mère, et puis la vie mondaine et le détachement progressif du beau slave, jusqu'à la scène finale ratée elle aussi... C'est seulement de manière fugitive, alors qu'Albert marche dans les sillons d'où s'envolent les corbeaux, qu'on retrouve un instant le Pierre Benoît qu'on aimait. Mais c'est bien court.
