A break down of ways to write and think about film history from technological, economic, aesthetic and sociological viewpoints. Each chapter outlines a theory and then applies it to a case study. The final chapter uses a longer case study to show how all these aspects of film history overlap. A useful book.
Intended as a textbook introducing film history theory and methodology, including many different methodologies ("great man" history, economic history, aesthetic history, technological history, social history), plus the problems inherent in sorting out filmic evidence. Tries to induce critical thinking about reading and doing film history. Excellent introduction to the field.
This is the second time I've read it and it seems a lot less eye-opening than the first time I read it (which makes sense I guess). However, it really is a foundational text and I will probably use some of the early chapters as required reading the next time I teach Film History.
