This volume contains books 2 and 3 of the Essene Gospel of Peace, which are purported to have originated from the lost trove of the Dead Sea scrolls. Book 2 was nowhere near as interesting as book 3. The author himself notes that he shared his first draft with Aldous Huxley who told him it was the most boring thing he had ever read and if this was the final version he would have no interest in book 3. He rewrote it but sadly Huxley did not live to give him feedback on the second draft, otherwise he may have told him to keep at it, it is not quite there yet. The best part was what he concluded were the original ten commandments that Moses ended up smashing after emerging from the mountaintop to find his people engaged in idol worship.

Book 3 however was quite good. In this volume he lays out the prayers to the elements, love, wisdom, the earth mother and the holy father which were exquisite. Additionally, he includes material about the beauty of trees, the stars, brotherhoods and more that were like perfect romantic poetry and quite pleasant.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Gnosticism or liberal Christian theology or who likes to view Christianity through an environmental lens.

Note - all four volumes of the Essene Gospels can be found free online and are freely shared by the author.

This volume proved to contain Book Two, the Unknown Books of the Essenes and Book Three, the Lost Scrolls of the Essene Brotherhood.

I haven't read Book One, the Gospel of Peace of Jesus Christ, so I'll have to try and get hold of that now.

These two Books I've read have, understandably, been translated (from the Aramaic ? - it's not clear) into an English comparable perhaps to that of the Authorized Version of the Bible (perhaps not, but that's what it seemed like to me).

I could have wished for a more detailed explanation of who the Essenes were. There is only a brief description of them, explaining that they lived on the shores of lakes and rivers, were agriculturists with their own economic system, and having neither rich nor poor amongst them. Jesus was of course an Essene Master.

The various texts can at first seem a bit unappealing, not being in modern language, but they are wonderfully poetic and contain much wisdom. After reading a few pages, my mood became elevated, though I felt good to begin with!

I recommend these texts to all those with any interest in spiritual matters.
