This book was an enjoyable sequel. I liked that there are more perspectives besides just Wren. The world is expanding, and the plot is bigger as characters level up and can take on more challenging opponents.

Fight scenes and character relationships are the strong suit of this novel. I'm looking forward to the next installments in the series.

4.5⭐️ This was a great final book in the first trilogy arc. Top notch YA. I really liked how the diverse squad has come together. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. My only complaints would be the characters feel a lot older than they are said to be and the way Wren is narrating the story whilst it still switches between different perspectives was a bit off for me. I would rather it was truly written from multiple perspectives. It does have me desperately wanting to reach for the next book though, and I am definitely disappointed that it hasn’t been written yet. I very much hope that Wang continues with this series as it has been set up well to really get going.

Girl Squad Volcanic is the third installment of the Volta Academy Chronicles and like its’ predecessors it’s extremely well-written, fast-paced, intelligent and has a great set of diverse main characters. Think ‘Cobra Kai’ with superpowers and in space – and I honestly mean that as a compliment. It’s most likely mainly aimed at young female readers, but that doesn’t change the fact that I thoroughly enjoy this series.

Girl Squad Volcanic wraps up a lot of threads from the first two books while simultaneously planting new ones, most likely the actual main storyline. At least in this book this also means more focus on the other characters than before, especially the first book was extremely focused on Wren (which storywise was the only choice that made sense). Now, the author is ‘zooming out’ so that other characters get more stage-time and drive the plot forward. The writing is smooth as always, the characters feel real with their hopes, worries and fears.

I’m really excited to continue this series!

This was another fun read, pink and actiony fun. I really enjoyed it. It's so original in so many ways and I can't wait to see where the story is going. But with this third volume the flaws are really starting to pile up and I can't keep ignoring it just because I want the book to be perfect. 'Cause it's not.

Things that bugged me:

The Wren-narrator (as it dubs itself in the end of this book):
it really does not work! It feels stupid to have a first person narrator (and the occasional extra third person one) interrupted by the SAME first person narrator from the future maybe three times during a book with some short meaningless comment from allknowing, older Wren. It ruins the flow of the story, pulls me out of it, makes things unnessesirily convoluted and so far it brings nothing to the story. Definitely a bad author call.

The stakes (or lack of):
I love the idea of a magic system where there are some people so much more powerful then the rest that it is almost unfathomable. Great idea. Not so great in practice, when the bad guy is so strong they could kill our main people in the blink of an eye - and don't?!? It happens a lot in this book and it feels really stupid.

Stupid decisions:
When stupid (young?) characters do very stupid things all the time and the boss keeps giving them jobs that they will obviously f... up? Yeah I hate that.

Going back to boring world:
...when you have JUST been banned from it in the end of last book and anyone else might be better suited for the job at hand. All you need is a little gender swap and we're back to planet boring with no delay. Okay, maybe I'm being nit-picky now.

I kind of feel like Wang (f-ing brilliant Wang!) Is being lazy about these books because they're YA. And that's really too bad because they are overall awesome and full of so much potential. Sigh.

I stayed up WAY TOO late trying to read this whole book in a single sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed this third instalment in the Volta Academy Chronicles and I can’t wait to see what happens in book 4! This one wrapped up most of the major plot threads from Books 1 & 2 and then dropped us into a bunch of new complications and twists to enjoy untangling in book 4 and beyond!
