Jimmy Burns was born in Madrid in 1953. His father the late Tom Burns met his mother Mabel Maranon while working in the British embassy in Madrid during the Second World War. Jimmy contributes Spanish language media outlets and publishes his books in Spanish translation as Jimmy Burns Maranon. His childhood was spent straddling cultures -Britain, Castille, and Catalonia. He went to school at a British school in Madrid, then a preparatory school in London before studying for his O and A-levels at the Jesuit Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. He took a BA honours degree in Latin American & Iberian Studies at University College, London and an MA in the politics and government of Latin America at the Institute of Latin American Studies in London and The London School of Economics and Political Science. On leaving university, he spent two years teaching English to foreign students, and travelling, gaining experience as a free-lance journalist writing about Latin America and Spain. His early published work included articles for the Catholic Herald and The Tablet. During the 1970's he was commissioned by the BBC to write the script for an Everyman documentary on the Brazilian Archbishop, Helder Camara. He also worked as a researcher for Yorkshire TV, contributing to a critically acclaimed film presented by Robert Kee on the death of Franco and Spain's transition to democracy.
In 1977 Jimmy joined the Financial Times and was posted to Portugal as Lisbon correspondent, reporting also on Spain. He also became a regular contributor to the London Observer, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Economist, as well as the BBC, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Radio Nederlands. From 1980-2 he worked for the Financial Times' international desk based in London before being posted to Buenos Aires, as the newspaper's southern cone correspondent.
He arrived in Buenos Aires in the middle of a military palace coup and three months before the invasion of the Falkland Islands by the Argentine armed forces sparked off a three-month war with Britain. He was the only full-time British foreign correspondent to remain in Argentina prior to, during, and well beyond the conflict, covering the country's transition to democracy, as well as political developments in Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. He continued to regularly contribute articles on Latin America to other media outlets in the UK, Europe, and the US.
In mid-1986 he returned to London to work at the Financial Times and prove himself as an author. Advised by his agent Caroline Dawnay, he agreed to be signed up by Liz Calder and Nigel Newton as one of the first authors of the most innovative independent publishing houses to emerge from the 1980's, Bloomsbury, with his book, on Argentina and the Falklands War, The Land that lost its Heroes. It won the 1988 Somerset Maugham Award for non-fiction. He followed this up with Beyond the Silver River: South American encounters, based on a collection of personal diaries he kept while living and travelling in South America. In the mid 1990's he was encouraged by David Reynolds and Penny Phillips, then editors at Bloomsbury to write the first full-length biography of Diego Maradona, and subsequently a history of FC Barcelona and the Catalan people. Together with writers like Nick Hornby, Simon Kuper, and Peter Davies, he was praised by the critics for breaking new boundaries in football writing. In between, he was commissioned by John Murray, another independent publisher at the time, to compile and write Spain: A Literary Companion. In Spain, he was co-author of Dossier Diana a book on the death of Princess Diana published by El Pais/Aguilar. Malo. Muy malo. Es una vergüenza que Almuzara publique un libro así. Entiendo que el autor, angloespañol, tiene más de "anglo" que de español (por las patadas que le mete a la lengua de Cervantes).
Hay faltas de ortografía, palabras mal escritas (hasta en un título de un capítulo) y párrafos copiados y pegados. Sin embargo, con lo que no puedo es con lo de los nombres: Blackburn Rivers, Abromovic, Beckam... ¿Se imaginan un libro de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hablando de Curchil?
Por otro lado, ningún capítulo adolece de sentido. No sabe hacer interesante el texto, abusa de citas que no aportan nada y es incapaz de mantener un hilo conductor. Una oportunidad desperdiciada para rendir un homenaje a los primeros 30 años de historia de la Premier.
P.D. El momento en el que dice que los ingleses vinieron a España a culturizarnos porque éramos un país subdesarrollado, y anclado en un sistema feudal, todavía me tiene dando volteretas.

Esta edición está horriblemente editada y traducida. Fallos horrorosos en la traducción. Ningún cuidado en esas cosas. Por otra parte es un libro que no me ha aportado nada que no supiera ya, muy plano y que cualquier seguidor un poco decente del fútbol inglés ya debería conocer antes de leerlo.

Kupując książkę liczyłem na ponad 200 stron o lidze angielskiej jednak gorzko się przeliczyłem. Przepełniona ona jest polityką i subiektywnymi liberalnymi poglądami autora. Widać też, że autor nie sympatyzuje z prawica polityczną chociażby antagonizując angielskie konserwatywne gazety. Łatwo jest zauważyć praktycznie w każdym rozdziale gloryfikację angielskiej klasy robotniczej oraz mniejszości etnicznych. Ciągłe powtarzanie w kółko o rasizmie i brexicie staje się męczące, ponieważ odbiega od tematu. Jeden rozdział poświęcony tym problemom byłby w zupełności zrozumiały ale nie całą treść temu poświęcona. Do tego środkowa część książki jest całkowicie odklejona od tematu. Zamiast pisaniu o lidze angielskiej kilka rozdziałów poświęconych jest kobiecej piłce reprezentacyjnej, polityce i podsumowywaniu działań brytyjskiego rządu. Gdybym chciał przeczytać o tych tematach to sięgnąłbym po stricte nastawiona na to pozycje.
Książkę oraz dodatkową dla niej gwiazdkę ratują początek, ponieważ część historii o klubach była nawet ciekawa i oryginalna, wywiady z kibicami tych klubów oraz ostatni rozdział o piłce angielsko hiszpańskiej, który uważam za zdecydowanie najlepszy.

Wysłałbym do psychiatryka osobę, która przed lekturą powiedziałaby mi, że Przemysław Rudzki napisze sto razy (dosłownie!) ciekawszą książkę o angielskiej piłce od Jimmy'ego Burnsa. Zasadniczo nawet trudno mi powiedzieć, o czym jest "Premier League". Burns snuje w ogóle niezwiązane ze sobą opowieści plus w kolejnych rozdziałach skacze z tematu na temat.
Absolutnym kuriozum było z kolei wstawienie w środek książki tekstu na temat kobiecej reprezentacji Anglii, który w ogóle nie ma nic wspólnego z angielską ekstraklasą piłkarską. Domyślam się, że pojawił się w imię poprawności politycznej, będącej zresztą jednym z wielu mankamentów książki.
Może rzeczywiście jest ona skierowana nie do starych zgredów, ale do najmłodszych czytelników, jak uważają niektórzy recenzenci? Według mnie poruszana tematyka na to nie wskazuje, więc jest to po prostu słaba książka jednego z najbardziej znanych dziennikarzy sportowych w Europie.

2,5 - Raczej nie można powiedzieć o tej książce, że jest zła, ale jest bardzo oczywista, szczególnie dla osób, które się Premier League interesują. Czytając, miałem wrażenie, że to jest bryk, który ma pomóc ogarnąć nowym zainteresowanym angielską piłką, co jest co.

Strasznie nijaka.Trochę jak zlepka losowych tematów, które wyświetliłyby się w wyszukiwarce po wpisaniu frazy "Premier League".Podjazdu do książek Jonathana Wilsona czy Michaela Coxa zwyczajnie nie ma.
