Man of the Month Club

Rate this book
A tart, funny, original novel about a would be single mom's quest to find the right man at the right time, with unexpected- and entertaining-consequences.

Amy Stokes has made a fortune designing and selling cutesy luxury baby products for her own fancy London boutique. But, ironically, she has never liked babies. Amy would rather stay out late with her friends, and spend her money living the fabulous life-designer clothes, a BMW convertible, a chic modernist apartment with roof garden.

However, at thirty-nine, a few unplanned events turn Amy's life inside out. She finds a baby abandoned on the doorstep of her store, accidentally runs over her dog, and a couple of her closest friends become pregnant. Suddenly, after years of utter silence, her biological clock starts ticking-and loudly. In a rush of optimism, Amy decides she wants to try for a baby, and she goes after her goal with the same entrepreneurial can-do spirit that's always worked in the past. But since she doesn't have a husband, or even a boyfriend, she must find an acceptable guy to knock her up.

Amy gives herself twelve months to accomplish her goal, which leads to a merry-go-round of potential winners and losers she dubs "the man of the month club." Yet she discovers that choosing a father for her child is entirely different from creating a business plan. And just when it looks like she might have found the perfect man, fate throws another curveball her way.

Jackie Clune

Jackie Clune (b. 1967, raised in Essex) is an English female comedy cabaret performer/writer, actress, and broadcaster who has previously done a Karen Carpenter act. She has appeared on popular British comedy trivia shows such as QI, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and The Staying-in Show and had a small role in a number of episodes of EastEnders, but is largely known for her one woman shows and her portrayal of Julie Burchill in a play by Tim Fountain. She is known for her dry anecdotal approach to comedy and camp sense of humour.

For a number of years, much of Clune's comedy act was based on her sexual orientation; Clune identified as a lesbian from 1988 to 2000. In one interview in 2003, she suggested that she chose to become a lesbian, apparently at least partly on political grounds, and did not identify with the coming out experiences of certain of her gay friends. She currently identifies as straight and has had four children with her partner Richard Hannant.

Clune sang the theme tune and wrote additional material for the TV show Smack the Pony. She also wrote the novel Man of the Month Club and Extreme Motherhood, an account of finding herself pregnant with triplets little more than a year after having her first child.

The premise of this book is fairly good. It is set up horribly. The main character, Amy, is not likeable. Her friends are equally annoying. The entire thing was sort of boring. Many times I told my husband, "I can't understand why I'm still reading this book." But I very rarely abandon books and so I pushed through to the end. I probably should have given up in the first few chapters after all.

This book could very well be the script of an English chick flick.

The story revolves around Amy Stokes, a thirty-nine year old workaholic who owns Precious Little Darlings - a store that sells baby items.

Interestingly, the store was Amy's only connection to babies and also parenthood. But this would soon change.
One day, Amy comes across a package lying in front of the store's doorstep. A beautiful baby was abandoned by her teenage mother. Amy initially confused as to how to go about the situation, takes the baby to the hospital to ensure that the baby is fit and healthy and to take things forward.
There she meets Dr. Joe, a handsome Italian man with a ring in his finger.

This experience with the baby brings a change in Amy.
Amy wants to become a mother and formulates a plan for the same.
Amy's mother, whom she describes as an 'intimate stranger',her dog Germaine, her friends Brendan, Jules, Soph and her husband Greg, and Angela play an important role in her decision directly or indirectly.

However she wants to parent the child herself.
The story then unfolds chapters of her relationships (if you could call it that) with different types of men and her attempts to get pregnant.
But she continued to fail.

But these failures help her discover something else.

Jackie Clune has a witty and engaging writing style and I enjoyed the premise well enough, but was ultimately disappointed with the direction the plot went. (I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked this one up out of the bargain bin.) This story just didn't go anywhere and felt really pointless. It was mostly told from the main character's perspective and should have been kept that way - the random scattering of other perspectives did very little for the story and really should have been trimmed down or cut out entirely. I also thought there was one too many bathroom scenes written into this book. At least is was a light, quick read and kept me entertained for a few hours. I wouldn't mind giving this author another try as it seemed there was a lot of untapped potential here, but on the whole I would recommend skipping this one.

This was a gift, so I read it. I thought it was a bit of a waste of time. The idea wasn't bad and there were occasionally amusing bits, but on the whole the characters weren't engaging and the book was a little....well.... boring!

I got this as a free gift. It was a cute book -- definitely something for the beach. I think the story could have been developed better, and the ending was a bit trite. But still, it was light and fun.

I really liked this book. Set in London. Amy doesn't want to have kids until she finds an abandoned baby. Gives herself a year to find a guy.
