Museum curator Catrina Dauvergne knew the earthquakes could not be her fault. But the beheaded bodies and priceless artifacts revealed by the cracks in the earth were her fate to find. Evelyn Vaughn is one of the nom-de-plume used by southern author Yvonne Jocks. Yes, the pun of E. Vaughn being her first name, Yvonne, is deliberate!

It was hard to get into the book at first as Catrina seems to be going out of her way to point out what a b*tch she is. Rhys is a former priest (and virgin) who seems to dislike Catrina while being fascinated by her. It was not an easy romance, but they both seem to bring out the best in each other.

The whole Black Madonna/Marian thing could be hard to follow. But the story is different and an intriguing look at the past. And the friendships starting to grow will lead to more of the mystery being unraveled in future books.

This was a fun book. The history was interesting, though the science was more than a little wonky and eye raising, but whatever.

The main issue I have (besides the stilted dialogue) is the main character. I can appreciate an unlikeable character, but wow did Vaughn overdo it. The main character's actions are pretty awful, so she didn't have to look at the camera and directly explain it to the reader all the damn time. We get it.

It has the same mood given off by Robert Langdon series maybe because of the same genre. Overall, I love it.

Catrina Dauvergne isn't your average heroine. She's French, has done a few bad things in the past and doesn't connect with people very easily. Yet, all that changes when an earthquake hits Paris and she falls into the long-lost grave of five guillotined women. The discovery throws her headfirst into an old mystery that has her seeing visions, finding keys and letters that push her further into the mystery of what happened to these women. Former priest Rhys Pritchard (already loved him from the Grailkeeper books!) is by her side to help her solve the mystery and tease her heart strings. They make an unlikely couple that seems doomed from the beginning...

This book was wonderful. There's action, a very strong narrator, enticing hero, loveable secondary characters, intriguing situations and a mystery that has hooked me in for the rest of the series. I can't wait to see what happens next -- where is this all heading?

Anyway, I knew this would be good but it surpassed my expectations. Evelyn Vaughn draws you into the tale with Catrina's casual voice, beautiful scenery and stimulating circumstances. This is a terrific book and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in checking out an intriguing thriller.

At first it was difficult for me to get into, even though I like the author. The main character just isn't all that likeable. She grows on you, but at first I just didn't want her to "win" the male character. I had grown attached to him in the earlier books in this series, and just plain didn't want him to end up with Cat. But it all got worked out and she ended up not being entirely hateful.

I found a list of the books in this series on Amazon, which is helpful since different authors collaborated on it. I look forward to reading the next book!
