I'm amazed how much I liked a 30-year old book to do with church methodology! This book did not feel outdated. As Carl George explained the "Nine Keys," he took turns mentioning "the church of the future" as well as the early church in Acts, making the small group principles in this book feel fairly durable. And the various other books I've read on church small groups have focused almost exclusively on either the care component, or on being evangelistic, but never both. What I loved about this book is that Carl George very persuasively stressed how both can be achieved in a complementary way, which is exactly what I want to see in our church. Why should one be sacrificed for the other in a world in which people are starving for community?
An oldie but a goodie, Carl George’s Nine Keys to Effective Small Group Leadership is still one of the very best resources out there for small group leaders. Check out a preview of his nine keys below… then buy copies of the book for each of your leaders.
