As an ex-cowboy who travelled the rodeo circuit, I was good at two things: roping and, after a bit of heartbreak, denying that I was looking for a man to warm my bed permanently.
I left that scene and settled in working at the Broken Horn Ranch. I was still good at denying the loneliness that kept creeping in, but the animals on the ranch and my plants kept me company.
And so did my best friend of three years, Zane.
Since I was so good at denying things, there was no way in God’s green acre I was going to tell my straight best friend that I’d fallen for him.
Yep, I’d just live my life out with the violets on my windowsill and carry that torch to my grave.
But sometimes things don’t go as planned.
Zane
When you’re close to forty, you should have your life figured out; job, home… and your sexuality.
I’ve never been one to follow the path of what’s expected and it’s hard to settle down when you don’t feel the connection needed for warming up the cold winter nights. Except with Alec.
After months of dealing with a tiny mid-life crisis, grappling with these newfound and unexpected feelings, I know I’m in love with my best friend.
When a piece of his rodeo past shows up at the ranch, it’s the motivation I need to openly claim the man who’s lassoed my heart.
I might not know exactly what I’m doing on this unfamiliar path… But for Alec, I want to walk it—together.
Alec is the third and final book in The Broken Horn Ranch Series. Prepare for a trouble making raccoon, a peacock that can't be contained, big belt buckles at a cowboy auction and SO MANY CAMEOS. Demisexuality and high intimacy with the most patient man you'll ever meet can be found here. While it's made to stand alone, you may enjoy more if you read the prior books first. Oh, and a lacy epilogue that just might make you blush.
RM is an introverted Canadian author who likes to write about love while freezing in the winter.
Her mission is to always make you swoon and snort laugh, sometimes even in public.
She talks to her cat, Moon, and sometimes people. She married her prince charming, who often inspires her characters, but still can't place dirty clothes in the hamper.
When she's not writing swoony men to fall in love with, she's in her garden providing mosquitoes with an alternative food source. She can also be found inventing new swear words on the golf course.

I was looking forward to reading Alec's story and I loved it so much! I got to see glimpses in the two previous books and it was about time he got his HEA. Alec has been in love with his best friend Zane for quite a while. He hasn't acted on it as Zane is supposed to be straight and Alec doesn't want to ruin their friendship. Then one thing leads to another and Zane discovers he isn't as straight as he thought and that demisexual is a more accurate label to use on himself. I loved, loved, loved this book so much! I know I'm repeating myself but RM Neill just wrote the perfect story for Alec and Zane. Their relationship was touching and there was so much emotion going on every time they were together. They got on so well and shared so much that when they took another step in their relationship it was beautiful, sweet and emotional. Alec was my favourite at the beginning, such a loyal friend and worried Zane discovered his feelings (a secret that everybody knew, LOL). But then Zane got into action and it was fascinating to witness him being all possessive and jealous regarding Alec. It was like something clicked inside of Zane and all of a sudden Alec was everything he had ever wanted. This story was extremely funny for two reasons, one being that there were many animals being naughty around the ranch and two, because of all the secondary characters. Meddling friends, but also very supportive and then the visitors for the auction, they all added so much to the story. Also, it is very well written, it made me feel everything the MCs did feel. This author is amazing at describing feelings and special moments. I think this is the perfect end for The Broken Horn Ranch series. I can't wait to read Sasha's story, he already made me a bit teary and I want to know more about him. As usual, I recommend this book, actually the whole series and everything this author has written so far.
OMG! Alec and Zane! Wonderful! I love friends to lovers and this story is fantastic. In love with each other for 3 years and finally magic happens. I love Zane's insecurity and Alec's patience. Best of all, apart from HEA, is the way the MCs from the previous books in this series are in this book as a support net of Alec and Zane. Loved it!
I love a good friends to more story. I love the pining the push and pull. I love that they went with what felt right. And how understanding they were to each other’s feelings. The found family was great also.
For me: Demi rep! No cheating/sharing A little OM drama Dual POV Relationship before
Well, I finally have Zane's story and I have to say, I'm glad the wait is over! I would like to say so many things about this book, but I always end up making the reviews so long that I don't know if anyone wants to read them... That being said, I would like to point out a couple of things that I really liked. I mean, I loved the story in general, but I would like to highlight a couple of things.
I think many of us by now know that sexuality is fluid. Therefore, changing. However, knowing this and accepting it in others is not the same as realizing and accepting it in oneself. For this reason, reading how Zane begins to question himself, discover things about himself and accept them as part of his reality and his life was, for me, an exciting but somewhat chilling journey. As I said, assimilating a change in one's sexuality is not easy. Above all, because one begins to have doubts if one really knows oneself, and begins to question other aspects of their own person. The foundations on which one builds their life are shaken and depending on one's strength, they can crack and collapse, or, in Zane's case, they can solidify and find the true path of his life. And I loved how the author told of his journey of discovery.
Another thing I liked is the way that once the MCs reveal what they feel for each other, there are no misunderstandings but rather they communicate like the adults they are, even though they are both scared that this change in their relationship could damage it. I mean, I love books with drama, jealousy, traumatic past and all that stuff that makes them exciting sometimes, but when you meet two grown people who act like grown people who are honest with their feelings? It's really refreshing.
And Alec. I can't finish this review without mentioning him. I think the author couldn't have created a better character for someone like Zane. Someone with their feet firmly on the ground. So sweet, generous and open to teaching, accompanying and supporting Zane during this change in his life. So yeah. I loved him.
And finally, all the cameos. One thing I loved is seeing that these people we met in other books are still those same people. Faithful to their personality and what attracted us to them in the first place.
Well, in the end, it ended up being long. Sorry? But I had to mention all that, and while I'm at it, I can add that it is entertaining, funny, romantic, and omg, these two men really know how to light a fire between the sheets, or on the couch, in a barn, or well...everywhere!
I was given an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
******* Spoiler Alert ******* I am a huge RM Neill fan. I have been waiting for this book in the series for so long. Previous to this, Alec was a bit more in the background and Zane was too. This book was like an explosion of feelings! Two best friends. One, Alec (who is a gay man), who realized a long time ago that his best friend Zane was everything he wanted in life. Alec thinks Zane is straighter than an arrow. Zane is definitely not and often talks about it with one of his best friends, Martin. Now he is with Alec every night sometimes sleeping there. One gentle touch by Zane changed it all. Slowly we go from kissing to much more erotic things! There is a charity event that will be doing roping. Alec recommends a bunch of his old rodeo buddies to Jacob, one being his ex before he knew the reason for giving the names. At the time it did not matter but when Alec's ex comes into town and wants him back the green eyed monster bites Zane. It forces him to come out to his closest friends. By the time the auction rolls around,,,, Well you just need to get this amazingly good book! RM NEILL is a very talented writer! I am so excited how she has introduced us to Sasha's character for Beauty and the Beard. But in this story, I adore both Zane and Alec. To see them as best friends was cute when everyone knew their's was a love ❤️ beating deep. It just took both of them, mostly Zane to realize what was right in front of him. This is an amazing story and an absolute MUST READ!
‘Being with Alec will change my entire life. And I want that. If the ridiculous flutter that settles in my chest every time I think of him is anything to go by, I’m in for a crazy ride. And now that I finally understand this attraction and have a hint at what it’s like to be with Alec, I want it all.’
RM Neill’s Alec finally gave us the romance we have been waiting for, for her well- loved character Zane. With Zane and Alec’s romance, we learned so much more about the way Zane had to challenge himself to understand feelings he hadn’t realized he was having for his best friend.
Once Zane was able to see and understand his emotional connection to his best friend of three years, his heart opened up like a peacock preening for his mate. This change was so much better than feeling like a raccoon scavenging through cans, and made his morning breakfast of Froot Loops taste even sweeter!
Speaking of sweet, The Broken Horn Ranch series has provided this reader with hours of pure joy. RM Nelll has balanced heart and heat with her cowboy tales and we’ve been fortunate to enjoy meeting all the characters that entwined through loyal friendships and deeply satisfying relationships.
I look forward to reading every book Neill puts out because I know I will have such an amazing experience getting lost in all the love!
This is the last in the Broken Horn Ranch series, and it's Alec and Zane's story. We've met both men before in other stories in the series, and it's finally time for these two to get their HEA. This is a best friends to lovers, with one guy discovering he's not as straight as he always thought he might be.
Alec is a retired cowboy and Zane is his best friend of 3 years, and honestly their relationship even before they get together is too cute for words. Zane's been questioning whether he is as straight as he thinks he is, and when he discovers he has real feelings for Alec, that's when the fun begins. These two are 0-100mph in a very short space of time, but actually it works for them as they already have that best friend relationship to build on. I liked that there was very little angst or second guessing from either, and it just worked.
It was fun seeing Zane's possessive streak and the pair of them working out what they liked in the bedroom was all kinds of hot. I loved the cast of supporting characters, and the introduction of a little bit of friction in the form of one of Alec's ex's was well done too. Loved Sasha and his friends, and so happy Sasha will be getting a story. Great finale to a good series.
Finally! Finally, Zane has his story. I have waited for a while and it was so incredibly worth it. Alec has been in love with Zane for three years and it finally comes together when Zane finds himself in love with his best friend, a guy. He’s kind of lost but so okay with it too.
Alec is hesitant as he never imagined his fantasies coming true. His best friend, who’s straight, falling in love with him. And his ex-boyfriend, rodeo partner shows up to mix things up for a charity event.
The story has humor, love, self-discovery, love, patience, love, and oh, did I mention love? It’s an incredible story that just had me feeling warm and fuzzy throughout. Oh, and Jeff… He just kept me laughing throughout. Who’s Jeff. No one you expect. He’s just a feathered troublemaker that keeps everyone on their toes. And the reader (me) in hysterics.
This book is filled with yes, so much love, but laughter, some sass and sparkle that brings a whole new element to the rodeo world, and friendship in the most unlikely places. I loved every chapter. I’m a rodeo lover. I’m a MM story lover. And I love Cowboys. This story just really, really made me happy. One of the best bookends to a series I’ve read in a long time.
It drives me crazy in a good way when RM Neill would end a great series! This is the 2nd series that I’ve fallen in love with by RM Neill. This is the 3rd book in the “Broken Horn Ranch” series. I’m sad to see this series ending since the three books has been such awesome reading! Throw in a pesky raccoon and a crazed peacock makes for funny scenes in the book! I love the fact that one of the MC is an older hot Cowboy because not enough books are written about guys my age!!!! More than 5 stars reading from me!
The story focuses on Alec, a sexy older cowboy working at the “Broken Horn Ranch”. He was a former circuit roper who had a nasty ending with his ex on the tour. That brought him to B.H.R. where he had been working for couple of years. He had been pining over his best friend, Zane who works in a saloon. Zane considered himself “straight” since he had been dating women. Alec refused to toy with the notion of crossing the line because he valued their friendship too much. The thing is both Alec and Zane were pretty oblivious about their feelings for each other while everyone around them knew the feelings were rather THICKKKKK!!!!! I’ll just stop right there and have you pick up the book to read and find out what happens!
This book was such a a great read... almost as good as "Blaze", but not quite. (And yes, Blaze is in this book with a secondary role!)
Alec and Zane have been best friends since childhood. Carrying a secret crush for his friend, Alec spends his days working at the Broken Horn Ranch, missing the rodeo circuit since a fall left him with a bone spur in his left hip. He longs to return to the rodeo, but the pain is there every day. He's thankful for the warm, relaxing hot tub he has behind his small house.
Working with Zane at the ranch is hard for Alec. He can only dream about being with the man he's been crushing on for years. Until.....
Until what? Read this heartwarming story to discover what happens for these two men carrying hidden torches for each other.
The supporting characters (Blaze, River, Hunter (Alec's ex),a newcomer who lives on glitter and more) are wonderfully woven into the plot. The world-building is stunning and dialogue sharp, witty and rich with emotions. Join the crew from the now famous Broken Horn Ranch for another tale of cowboys, a love-lorn male peacock who is always chasing a certain ranch hand and moderate heat.
This series ended entirely too soon for my liking, but it was packed with great moments and adventures. Broken Horn Ranch was so much fun to read, every character more than deserving of their time. And, we’re ending with the succulent retired-rodeo star and a bi-awakening for none other than his beloved object of affection.
Alec and Zane have been such a joy having peeks of them throughout the series, they’re even better together. Their friendship was so strong, built on love and respect for each other, even before they take the next step. They have such a solid foundation that their bond is unbreakable. But, who would have thought Zane was possessive?!
Reading about how their relationship progressed into more than a friendship was the icing on the cake. It’s as if you could visually experience the hearts in their eyes for one another. Their openness and honesty with each other was so perfect! And, Zane never doubted his feelings once he realized how much he loved his best friend.
Very enjoyable finale to this series, even if it ended too soon. Hopefully we’ll see these characters in the future with updates on their lives!!
All I can think of right now is how happy I am to have gotten the chance to read this book. Alec and Zane are best friends. Alec keeps Zane company at the Brewery and Zane takes care of Alec feeding him and watering his plants. Alec has a secret though and that is how he truly feels about Zane. But is it a secret if everyone knows except for Zane?
This story is one of friendship and love. It is swoony, laugh out loud funny, sweet, and a tad bit sad. Before I was even 23% of the way through it, I knew I would love it. I think I highlighted anywhere from chunks of paragraphs to a sentence here and there. There are some things that I have to come to expect with an R. M. Neill book. 1) Characters that are well planned out and make me fall in love with them. 2) A story that makes me aww and ooh flashing between wonderment and laughter. 3) A happy ending that either sets me up for another story and/or leaves me dreaming of the goodness I just finished. I feel like some authors are just automatic reads, R. M. Neill is that for me. I hope that she becomes that for others as well.
This is a best friends to more romance, featuring Alec and Zane, and is book three in the Broken Horn Ranch series.
Alec is a former rodeo cowboy secretly in love with his straight best friend, Zane, and expects to love him from afar forever. When Zane realises his feelings and Alec’s ex boyfriend reappears, they’re forced to face the truth about what they mean to each other.
This was a soft, heartfelt best-friends romance that completely worked for me, I think it’s my favourite in the series so far. Alec’s quiet pining and Zane’s late-in-life awakening felt honest and tender, and the slow burn paid off beautifully, making their emotional payoff deeply satisfying and warm.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 3 in series MM romance Slow burn Best friends Cowboy / ranch Foreman x bartender Pining & unrequited love Caretaker / makes him food Jealous & possessive Demi rep Queer awakening Spicy times Marking Car s*x Rope play & role playing Coming out Found family HEA
What is it about cowboys that makes them so sexy: Alec is one sexy Cowboy. This is a sweey story of friends to lovers and a bi-awakening. Zane seems to accept his altered preferences easily, with little drama; except his usual few minutes of freaking out. He discovers he is a jealous lover and potentially possessive, but Alec seems to know how to reassure him. There are some hilarious moments, which range from incidents with a peacock to shaving nics. The intimate scenes are quite tame, despite some rope play and suggestion of taking it further with shibari, but it doesn't feature in the book. Lots of secondary characters that keep the narrative flowing. I was glad Hunter wasn't a baddie all the way to the end, maybe he will find his cowboy one day. Sasha will kick off the next series and there is definitely a story in him. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the final book in this series and it sends it off on a high note. This is the story of Alec and Zane. Alec is a former rodeo rider who now works on the Broken Horn Ranch. He is alone and wishes that he had someone to come home to. Of course, being in love with a straight man and his best friend is not helping that dream come true. Zane is a part owner of a bar and a favourite bar keep. He is best friends with Alec. He always does everything with Alec. Until one day when his perception of Alec shifts. Alec is unaware of the thoughts going through Zane's mind but he is more than happy to adapt. This is their story. It is a well written and easy to read book. I loved the chemistry and the caring between Zane and Alec. Of course, it is always fun to see friends from the previous books. I really enjoyed this book. And I can't wait for the beginning of the next series.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It was a pleasure to meet the men of the Broken Horn Ranch. First was a billionaire and a talented furniture maker in Blaze (first for me as I started reading the series from book two). Now a rodeo rider and his best friend. These men might be mature but they become pretty immature when they run out of their Froot Loops and catch a raccoon raiding their kitchen 😄 They lovingly talk to their plants and are not afraid of saying what’s on their minds. It's a different kind of dynamic when men around forty are trying to sort out their feelings, their worries and their actions, and one of the reasons I like RM Neil's books.
It was pure joy watching Zane figuring out his feelings for his best friend and Alec being so patient with him on this journey. Demisexuality is always a selling point for me in books, and so I loved discovering it together with Zane. The presence of familiar characters from previous books was a nice bonus as well.
A slow-burn friends-to-lovers story that hits all the emotional notes. Alec and his best friend have a bond that runs deep, but the fear of losing what they already have keeps them suspended in a kind of emotional limbo. That tension makes every interaction feel loaded, every moment meaningful.
Neill writes their story with such care, allowing these two men the space to figure themselves out—flaws, fears, and all. The rural setting isn’t just background; it becomes part of the emotional fabric of the novel. There’s a softness to the way they fall in love, a sense of homecoming that feels just right.
I came for the cowboys. I stayed for the vulnerability, the authenticity, and the quiet courage it takes to finally say: yes, I want more.
This was an absolutely beautiful read, Zane and Alec are just so swoony together. These are two of the loveliest characters I’ve come across, their friendship was truly beautiful and as a couple they are even better. R.M Neill is an expert at filling her stories with such genuine emotion, it makes them quite special to read. In the early chapters, Alec’s longing for Zane is so very clear, it made the stakes for their relationship so high and packed tons of emotion into their romance. I also absolutely loved getting the chance to see so many beloved characters play a part in Alec and Zane’s story. I enjoyed the humor as well, there are moments that had me laughing out loud, Martin and his red wine were a personal favorite. It is gorgeously written, epically steamy, and one of the most romantic books I’ve read. Loved every single word.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is one of my favorite tropes in MM-best friends to lovers. The classic falling in love with your straight best friend even when you know you shouldn’t. Alec is a cowboy who used to travel the rodeo circuit and Zane cooks at a brewery he co-owns with friends, but the friendship they’ve built is something that most people strive for their entire lives and they did it in three years. This one’s got an unruly raccoon and a peacock that loves to strut, a man with a possessive streak a mile wide, some fashion models, cowboy hats, a piece of rope (if you catch my drift 🥵). If you need something good for your heart you will love the way things develop between these two, there are so many beautiful swoon worthy lines! I have already got the first two of this series downloaded to my kindle and I can’t wait to dive in!
This enjoyable, low-angst, fairly high-heat book is heavy on the best kind of love. Alec and Zane have been best friends for several years. They spend most evenings together hanging out and simply are fond of each other's company. Alec, an openly gay man and cowboy, secretly pines for something more with Zane, but since Zane identifies as straight, Alec knows his desires must be kept firmly in his own mind.
After some time, a few observations and comments make Zane realize that he might not be as straight as he thinks. When Alec's ex comes to town to participate in a fundraising rodeo, Zane sees green. This well-paced book is not a slow-burn and doesn't suffer from a lack of communication. There is a nice relationship arc with growing heat and passion. The love between these two men is 100% and forever. Recommended!
Another adorable installment in the Broken Horn Ranch series! I’ll keep it short and sweet.
Much like “Blaze”, this book took a good step away from the OTT conflicts from “Colby” and settled into a very cozy vibe. Alec and Zane were perfect, and I loved how easy their transition from friends to boyfriends was. The way they played caretaker for each other was incredibly endearing, and it made for a syrupy-sweet story.
Something I need to remember about this author (and something people should know) is that the pacing of the romantic plot in these 3 stories is quite different to many other contemporary romances I’ve read. It’s almost a hallmark of the author’s work, and honestly…I’m not mad! Now that I’ve synchronized with the pacing, I’m ready to jump into the last book. Here we go, Heath!
This book by RM I had a difficult time getting into. It just felt disjointed to me, I feel as though there was already a sort of relationship established outside of this book, and that left me feeling a bit out of the loop so to speak. There was a bit of insta-love that occured. While Alec had feelings for Zane for years, Zane realized his feelings more recently than Alec, then from there it was full speed ahead. That's not to say the book itself is bad but I just couldn't connect with the characters. I did enjoy Sasha's character, I feel like they brought a peppy element to the story.
I loved all the hijinks that occured with all the wild animals, especially the chubby and pesky raccoon, along with the peacock that kept escaping.
Zane and Alec have been best friends for 3 years while working on the same farm together. As time has passed, Zane has begun to question his sexuality as he finds himself attracted to Alec and what that could mean for their friendship if he revealed his feelings.
I loved how Alec was always so patient and kind and silently allowed Zane to have his space to figure out what he wanted. And their communication with each other? FINALLY, we have grown men not afraid to talk about their feelings and keeping the communication honest and open and actually discussing their thoughts like grown adults (as people really should anyway!).
I received a free copy of this book via Indie Author Creative and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Alec is a former rodeo star and now works a ranch. He's been hurt in the past and is leery or a new relationship. He's also secretly in love with his best friend, Zane who's straight. He'll never do anything about it though because he's terrified of losing Zane's friendship. Zane has only dated women and has always felt as though something was lacking. He's kind of clueless and has never considered anything about men until his friendship with Alec slowly starts to open his eyes to the possibilities. These two were so swoony and had such a wonderful friendship that gave them a wonderful base to evolve into a different kind of love. Add in some animal shenanigans involving a raccoon and peacock and this turned out be another wonderful book in the series.
Alec and Zane are best friends who are keeping secrets from each other. Alec has been in love with Zane for three years and Zane now sees Alec as potentially more than just his best friend.
I love Alec and Zane, these two are so adorable as they dance around their feelings for each other. Once they finally come together, they are insatiable. Alec is so much more romantic than I was expecting which was sweet. The raccoon and peacock are funny side characters.
I love this entire found family and am sad that we are leaving the Broken Horn Ranch.
Get ready for... mm, cowboy, best friends, unrequited love, demisexual, bisexual, hurt/comfort, found family, and first-person point of view.
Be mindful that this book contains content that may be triggering.

When RM Neill asks you to alpha read Alec and Zane’s story, you say, “Yes!”. When she then asks for you to edit it, you reply in the same way. When you see the paperback available a week before ebook release, you throw yourself at it. Am I biased? Absolutely. However, I am a longtime reader of RM’s books. I love her writing style, her characters, and her humour.
Alec and Zane were everything I wanted them to be and were the perfect note to end the series on. The paperback is sitting proudly with Blaze and Colby. A beautiful and fun trilogy has come to a close. Alec R.M. Neill
A best friends, opposites attract romance. Neither mc's are willing to cross that line to more and ruin their friendship. Alec, foreman of Broken Horn Ranch has harboured feelings for Zane for the last three years, since they met. Besides he thinks Zane is straight. Zane has recently begun questioning his sexuality. Just as they begin to explore more, Alec's ex is there. Alec to Zane - "The promise of all of you is far more appealing than the promise of one night with him" This is a beautifully written exploration of wants and needs, of best friends and lovers. Revisiting all the guys at Broken Horn was fun.
Time has come to say goodbye to this special community and the amazing found family at the Broken Horn Ranch and the little town of Bloomburg. Alec & Zane's story was a perfect way to end this sweet series and a great example of the best friend to lovers trope done right.
With little cameos and mentions of characters from both this series and the Sheltered Connections series, you get a real sense of closure to the interconnected stories. I especially loved seeing Katie again and seeing how she is doing. As usual, Heath brought his odd ball quirkiness and provided many laughs (the 👟 😂) and I hope we still get to see him in the new upcoming series, Maple Mountain Lodge.
