Will “WonderBoy” Kwan and ShaChri “Feral Daughter” Patel take a well-earned break from their real-life troubles to quest in SPARK for a day. They have a peaceful day planned. They’ll spend the morning exploring OrcLand where Will is convinced alternate solutions exist and then hit Into the Monolith in the afternoon.
They enter the park holding hands and realizing that they are in love. It should be a perfect day.
Morrigan, the AI, has other thoughts. For their relationship to survive the war that she sees coming, Will and Feral must be tested.
OrcLand by Pat Daily is part of The Spark Chronicles series, which I haven’t read yet, so I’m reviewing this as a standalone novella. The book is under 100 pages, making it a very quick read that can easily be finished in about an hour.
Even without reading the previous books, it’s clear that the characters have already been through a lot before the events of this story. The novella has an adventurous feel throughout, and the fast pace keeps things moving toward a very climactic ending.
I found Morrigan especially interesting and would love to see more of her role in the earlier books. The story hints at a much bigger world and deeper character histories, which made me curious about the rest of the series.
My main issue is that I wished there had been more. Because this is connected to an ongoing series, I sometimes felt like I was missing context that would have made certain moments more impactful. Still, it worked well enough as a short sci-fi adventure and definitely made me interested in reading the previous books first before continuing further into the series.
