When assassins from the Fourth World make their way up a living waterway to a young boy named JD, JD must embrace his destiny and master the powers that he has been entrusted with to save a world in conflict.
JD is on what feels like a constant run, in an effort to meet with his grandpa’s oldest friend, the vampire lord over the Jade Region, Blaise… Except that JD only keeps running into trouble! As if narrowly escaping from Du Mascara didn’t warrant reprieve, JD faces a potentially tragic event on his transportation. A carriage that travels via Aqua Maids, is currently being cursed to turn all the water in the waterway into fire! The Aqua Maid begs JD for help, but what can one small boy do? Shouldn’t the staff handle this?!
After the fiasco with the Aqua Maids, JD STILL can’t seem to catch a break! He’s nearly within reach of the Jade Region when he, Stone Cold, and their temporary traveling companion are all attacked on the river entering the Jade Region!
Meanwhile, the commander and his colleagues are investigating everything JD has left behind. Within those traces, it appears that the goddess Eomaia may be the main suspect… but can the commander’s faith be wavered by his sense of justice?
Recast feels so much like a 2004 anime, especially with its splash color pages and how they’re drawn. The angles, the shading, and the text… it all likens itself to a 2004 era anime. Besides that, I’m really beginning to warm up to, and understand, the story and plot. The worldbuilding is odd but I’m beginning to understand that Recast is built less for the characters, and more as a world, a playground built that we see through the eyes of these characters. The true story lies in the world, not in JD or anyone else, as they’re feeling quite inconsequential in the big picture.
I absolutely love the designs of the monsters and puppets. The vampires, all the puppets… they’re incredible. They’re so good. And the author/artist excels at action scenes. The random gags still feel a little oddly placed or timed to me, but I’m beginning to get the hang of this author’s style of gags. I’m liking Recast a little more, and I think I’d like to see what other monsters and puppets Seung-Hui Kye has in store… and I’m also a little bit interested in the commander’s story involving Eomaia (and the Jade Region story).
I couldn't remember too much about the first volume in this series, so had to pick up the story again. This turned out to be fine, and I could easily follow what was happening. I enjoyed this volume and would be interested in seeing where the story goes next.
Ok, so "Recast" volume 2. :) all about our goofy tween hero trying to make his way to the Lord of the Jade region to find out about his grandfather's mysterious past & the strange recast & chastity spells that were cast on him. There's a bounty on his head, so puppet bounty hunters (creatures/people from hell) are after him, even though he's not sure why & so is the group of special police like people who hunt the puppets, believing that JD is some kind of danger to the public. :/ I don't see. How could anyone think that silly kid's a threat?
I love JD. He reminds me of Aang from "avatar: the last airbender." He's goofy & sweet, but I think he could be really bad ass if he wanted to be. & clear cares about his friends & family & people. (Trying to stop test terrorist. xD tried so hard.) but he's still a little idiot, he is only 12/13. We can't expect to much from him. :) I absolutely love his character design. His facial expressions had me laughing out loud several times.
The artwork here is really stunning. Detailed, with great designs for characters & the setting. Which brings me to the world. I freaking love it, with this upper & lower levels & this water way. (& that sea turtle seal thing was freaking funny,) It's awesome looking in manga form & a perfect idea for a fantasy story. I would just love to see this as a tv show. It'd be great for "avatar" fans.
The plots pretty basic fanntsy stuff, but it's very well done, so I feel it works here. We're still not totally clued in to why grifford put those spells on JD or exactly who he was, what his connection to the fourth world was, so that alone, & this volumes cliffhanger ending is definitely enough to keep one reader. I really wanna know about this vampire lord, Blaise.
"Recast" is a great mix of action & humor & fantasy. This would be a perfect choice for fans of "avatar: the last airbender", "Harry potter" or probably anyone who likes fantasy & manga. Mostly aimed at young teen boys, But anyone can enjoy. (I'm proof, being 20 & very much a girl. :P) The age suggestion on the book says 13+ but I'm thinking older preteens can handle it. 11 to 12 years olds maybe. If your kids read "Harry Potter" "warriors", "rangers apprentice" or "wings of fire" they can probably handle "recast"
(But please, for the love of God, if you're a parent, read the book yourself, first & judge if it's appropriate for your kid on your own. Really should be involved in what your kid is reading!)
Love the series & am so glad I found it. :) Onward to book 3!
