Dear Heart, Come Home: Path of Mid-life Spirituality by Joyce Rupp (1996) Paperback

Rate this book
Joyce Rupp shares her own midlife journey—its ups and downs—with such honesty and insight that you will surely identify with and benefit from the discoveries she has made along the way. Among them we can find wisdom in the wounds we've carried from birth onward, and these wounds can heal; past regrets must be let go lest they cling to us and drain our energy for life; the loving part of us can always out-wrestle the hating part; surprises of beauty and talent in us wait to be discovered and shared; some of what we thought to be unbreakable truth is now shattered pottery and unmendable; and our struggle to name God and to find a spirituality that enlivens and enriches our existence is less complex than we first thought.

Just finished this book and found it enlightening. It is about midlife spirituality, but applies to anyone going through transition. It speaks to the need to be patient, open, and accepting of the process of change. I would recommend it, but would also say that one should plan on working through the book rather than trying to just read it.

This was the first book, actually this book was the formation of a group of women continuing to meet. We started 15 years ago through a discussion we were all in at a church dinner. We have taken different formats since this read, yet this started us off on a rich journey. Recommend reading with a group of compassionate people.

I am not middle aged. In fact, I am turning 20 tomorrow.
I picked this book up randomly from the library because I thought it looked interesting and even though it is not written for me, a young person, a lot of it really resonated.
The way she speaks of interconnectedness, of spirituality, the beautiful way she uses images. You don’t have to be in your midlife to read this book and absorb the lessons.
I’m sure that there is a lot of this book that I didn’t get because I am simply not there in life yet, but even still, I related. I guess we’re all yearning.
This was a really good book, it means a lot to me.
What will you do with your one wild and precious life?

I read this for church book club but the format is more intended for a small group experience. I would love to read again - slower pace, completing the suggested activities and journaling.

I really liked this book at the time I read it because I was in a deep, dark space at the time and this book walks from the light into the darkness and back into the light and affirms that it can be safe in the dark. After all the womb was a very dark place, but also very safe! It was a very affirming read for me at a time when I really needed affirmation.
