This book combines two of John Betjeman's abiding passions - railways and architecture, specifically victorian buildings. Most of the stations described have been rebuilt - some demolished. The earlier remodelling was almost completely disastrous - think Euston but recent works have been a revelation. Three stand out for me - Liverpool Street, Kings Cross and St Pancras. In each case, the original building has been enhanced by the new works and indeed shown to a far better advantage than the unrebuilt edifice did. As it s the book evokes a lost time in London. The photographs in black and white go brilliantly with the text to illuminate Betjeman's thoughts.
