Illustrated by Tom Pohrt and translated by Norman. One of 1,000 copies & only issued in wrappers. Naming stories told by Swampy Cree people of northern Manitoba.
I loved this book as a child, and was very frustrated to find out it did not get carted to North Carolina and back with the rest of my parents' collection. But I managed to buy a used copy on Amazon, and now I'm reading it to my daughter. It is a book of Swampy Cree naming stories, sort of like personalized pourquoi tales.
Some of the stories are quite strange, the story logic is the logic of folklore and fairy tales, and if you are reading them aloud the Swampy Cree names are going to tie your tongue in knots. But the imagery is so compelling that I have carried it with me since my childhood, and sometimes I will read or observe things which will remind me of one of these stories.
I like the idea that a name should be not only unique and appropriate to the individual, but also should be earned.
