I've had this book sitting on my shelf for about 5 years after attending a workshop with Marcia Tate. I dug the book out this summer as I was working on re-doing some of my lesson plans to be more common-core appropriate. At this point, I found it to be very basic and not have a lot of practical stuff I could really apply. I guess if you've never really heard that you should do more than just lecture, this book is a great introduction. However, now that we've all heard that for so long, this book seemed basic.
A good selection of strategies to engage learners in the classroom. All of them won't work for every situation, obviously, but you can probably find some way to use most of them some of the time. I have 3 or 4 that are my sort of go-to ideas, but it's good to have some change-up every once in a while. I especially like the ones that are no-prep strategies so you can just use them in the classroom whenever.
I had the fortune to participate in a Marcia Tate workshop this week, and read the book as prep for the workshop. It's very user friendly and engaging, and has some great strategies that I can't wait to use in my classroom!
I was introduced to this book during the time Marcia Tate came to my job to do a presentation on how to teach kids from different angles. This book is also great for encouraging teachers as well.
I had the pleasure of seeing Marcia Tate last year and I have used many of her strategies in my reading classroom! This book is FULL of great strategies to help engage students in learning.
