The book New Shoes was a great book. Ella Mae wanted new shoes but she went to the store and realized she was not allowed to try them on, even though the little white girl could. Her cousin and her opened up their own shoe store so everyone could try shoes on. The story was funny and colorful. It is unfair on why they couldn't try on shoes like everyone else. Since they did not like that, they changed the situation. I liked how Ella Mae and her cousin opened up their own shoe store since they weren't allowed to try on shoes at the other store.
From a teacher's perspective, this book is fabulous. The pictures in the book are soft, pastel colors which can be calming. It teaches rhyming, determination, and fairness. I could use this as a problem and solution lesson. You could also connect it to literacy with rhyming and different parts of speech. It can also teach generosity and treating everyone with kindness. It can teach both a core-subject and moral lesson.
Looks like it's time to buy a new pair of shoes, but with so many different kinds to choose from, how do we decide?
So much fun to read. The text is lyrical and rhyming, the illustrations are bright and colorful. I loved reading this with my preschool granddaughter. She knew how to read "shoes" by the end, that's for sure. Liked it so much we started over and read it again!
Good book to explore colors, patterns, rhyming, opposites and sames. vivid colors and very good illustrations. Good book for the beginning reader and for the picture reader.
