I think this book explains how to use a map and compass and not get lost (or temporarily unsure of your location in the wilderness). It seems similar to a few other books on the subject, except that the text is easier to follow, and the illustrations are excellent. For example; declination is something beginners have a hard time with. She explains that subject clearly, and even adds an appendix if you want another method of adjusting for declination and orienting a map. It does not cover GPS systems much, but that is another subject. In my humble opinion, you need to know how to use a map and compass before you use a GPS to monitor your location.... and always carry the good reliable old paper map and baseplate compass regardless.
