A really rather gorgeous collection of drawing tips and inspirations for those interested in "fantasy art", divided into sections that include titles such as “Snow and Ice Beasts”. Each section is accompanied by gorgeous photographic spreads with reference ideas, and step-by-step artworks by other fantasy artists. It is also incredibly comprehensive (hinted at in the title, perhaps), covering everything from composition to colouring, anatomy to armour, architecture and landscapes. Definitely making me miss drawing, tempted to pick up a pencil again and see what happens...
This book is a great guide for newer artists looking for some fantasy inspiration. The sections on character/story development and landscapes were particularly well done.
4/5 stars: I bought this book years ago, and just got around to reading it cover to cover. That being said, some of the digital art techniques/software feel a little outdated. If you’re looking for a traditional art guide this is a great resource, but look elsewhere if you’re interested in digital art.
Also speaking as a more experienced artist, some of the character and creature sketches and designs felt a little sloppy for a printed book.
