The Maker Jock

Rate this book
Alex's invention may just change the world--if a sweltering heat wave, flaky twin brother, and falling for the Norse god of advertising don't derail him first. But Alex doesn't know success is more complicated than failure ever could be.

CONTENT ADVISORY: This title contains an HFN ending.
AUTHOR NOTE: I will be releasing a novella to give Alex and Christian their HEA. Stay tuned for updates and a link!

In thirty-four days, Alex Maddox will present his invention to the world. He's spent his life working for this moment. He won't accept anything less than perfection, but to do that he's going to need help.

Christian Lawson is a marketing god, self-assured, intelligent, decisive, and nothing like Alex thought he would be.

With Team Maker Jock backing him up, Alex may be able to deliver the impossible--if he can keep a broken air conditioner, a flaky twin brother, a thirtieth birthday, and falling for the Norse god of advertising from derailing him first.

Nothing can prepare Alex for how big his invention really is. Success will be more complicated than failure ever could be.

Sam is a wandering queer romance author who sleeps little and reads a lot. Happiest in a foreign country. Twitchy when not mentally in motion. Her name is Sam, not Sammy, definitely not Samantha. She’s a dark/cynical/jaded person, but hides that darkness well behind her obsession(s) with shiny objects.

This novella had several things going for it. First, the characters are legit likable. Lately, when I find myself reading something in this genre, for whatever reason I'm only really attached to maybe one or two of the characters. That may or may not be the main characters lol. Anyhoo, yeah I really enjoyed all them in this. They felt very real, quirky, yet approachable. Second, I found this incredibly funny. Not in the tears rolling down your face, hold your sides kind of way, but consistently funny throughout which is always a pleasant way to spend an hour or so. Alex and Christian really fit together, and Micah stole my heart. Third, holy bejesus! I had never heard of Maker Faire before (what rock have I been under), and I thought it was awesome. Robots and Detroit? Yes, please. For those interested, there are Maker Faires in multiple locations and the inventions blew my mind.

I'd say this is a lovely story that is light on the angst so if you find yourself in the mood for something quirky and easy, I'd suggest this. I tend to like things a little bit grittier and with a little bit more tension between the characters, so save this for a day after you've read something uber dark, depressing, etc hahah.

I recently saw this author's WIPs, and I'm excited that they all seem different. I'm not going to lie though, Slash and Burn sounds aweessommmeee!!!!

I think this might be my favorite story in this collection from Silver. Great, fun characters, and I really loved the storyline (robots!) and progression. Would love to read more about them and Alex's twin

This story is fun, has an interesting plotline, quirky but lovable characters, and some very hot man-on-man action. Slow to build though the physical relationship between Alex and Christian may be, the tension of attraction sizzles between them from the first time they meet. And what I really liked is that it isn't just physical. As different as they are in terms of their chosen fields of robotics and advertising, as close they get when discussing their way of life and what is important to them. As for the bigger story in the background, the one about Alex's invention? A great idea, well presented, and keeping the tension until almost the last page in terms of how Alex will handle it.

Alex is the perfect geek: too intelligent to care about everyday life, into everything that looks or smells nerdy, and working on a project that may just change the way the world looks at robots. He is also extremely lonely and looking for a permanent, loving connection to a man who will accept all his quirks. When he runs into Christian, he thinks he may have found what he is looking for, but cannot quite believe the interest is two-sided.

Christian is ambitious, successful, and determined not to let a motorcycle accident that almost took his leg get in the way of enjoying life. Or, rather, his job, since he pretty much has no personal life. From what we get to see from Alex's point of view, Christian falls for the geeky scientist immediately, yet he takes his time to get to know Alex better. Not to mention the extensive use of his considerable seduction skills. They add a whole extra level of teasing and tension to the story and made very enjoyable.

The secondary characters, Alex's identical twin brother Micah and his boyfriend JT, also deserve a mention. They are just as quirky as Alex and Christian, and made me laugh with their antics. Well, Micah's mostly, but JT is such a perfect match for him that they made me grin every time they appeared. If you like stories that make you laugh, if you enjoy a somewhat nerdy geek as one of the main characters, and if you like the idea of a slow seduction leading to an explosive conclusion on top of all the science-y stuff going on, then you will probably like this book as much as I did.

Yes, I loved this. Short but brilliant. (Thankfully, there is a continuation).

And also brilliant is the message within,

Refreshing to see true moral values popping up in romance books. Absolutely brilliant.

I love Alex so much, he is a darling, brilliant man. And Christian is absolutely tops too—only I would have a new name for him. I hate that name.

This author does it for me on so many levels, both language-wise and in regards to actual subjects treated within the stories themselves. And I adore that Alex's mother is a daughter of an eastern immigrant, and his father the son of a Welsh one. Makes both for interesting looks and brain-wave DNA patterns. I love mixing.

Stunning story, and I only found one single error. (Yes, I'm talking about when to use the verbs lie or lay. I know, I know, but it's my thing. I like well-written prose, okay?) And honestly, I'm seeing that error so often these days I think it will become normal soon.

***********
Usually, this is where I would put my disclaimer, (the one that says I pay with my own, hard-earned cash for all the books I read).

This time, however, I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is that review.

May have slight spoilers.

In The Maker Jock by S.A. McAuley we meet Alex Maddox and Christian Lawson.

I really liked this story by S.A. McAuley, unlike some shorter male/male books that only focus on the sex, we get a lot of really good plot in this—that is not to say there isn’t sex mind you. ;)

Alex Maddox has been living with his twin brother for the last four months as he works on his project for the Maker Summit. He almost has his robot perfect but he needs something else as well, advertising, marketing, a name.

In comes Christian Lawson, the very sexy marketing god who is going to set Alex up with everything he needs. Of course that might just include Christian himself as well.

The attraction between the two is immediate for both of them, but Alex and Christian have their own worries about a relationship together and with the Summit looming over them tensions are running higher than normal.

Again I really liked this, one thing I really love though was that though Christian is a real Alpha, he was not some perfect person like most books portray their main characters; he had his flaws, just like Alex had his.

I have to say that the Maker Summit is not something I have ever heard of before so it made for very interesting plot to me, especially Alex’s robot, very cool!

The two other characters we have a lot of Alex’s twin brother Micah and his boyfriend JT, they were both great supporting characters, and very supporting they were in Alex’s work and life.

In the end we are left hanging, on what seems to be a great start of a wonderful sex scene and with a huge decision that Alex has made with his brother and Christian.

Overall if there is going to be a second book--I can not wait to get my hands on it! I want more Christian and Alex and need to know what happens next!

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good, quick, male/male romance to read!

*I received a hardcover/paperback/eBook copy/ARC of this book for free to review from the author/publisher; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.

This was an enjoyable story, but I've been fortunate enough to beta for Sam and I know she's capable of grab-you-by-the-throat, knock-your-socks-off writing. So I think I might have liked this better if I hadn't yet read anything else by her and gone into it expecting that sort of thing.

This is a sweet story with a fun theme (Maker Faire and robots FTW!). But the characters are almost a little too perfect, even with their flaws. And conflicts are resolved a little too quickly for there to be any real tension. This is a good story, but it's not an especially memorable one. It's not an issue of length, as she's written shorter stories that build real tension, culminating in a satisfying climax.

I highly recommend checking out her upcoming releases for complex, fascinating, and unforgettable characters whose stories will move you to tears, punch you in the gut, and then have you reading the last page with a happy sigh.

Probably closer to a 4.5 star read. I loved this story and can't wait for the novella the author has promised so I can see more. Alex and Christian were great together and I liked the secondary characters too. All the little tidbits about robots and Makers was something I'd heard about before, but never really knew much about and this book actually made me want find out more. So fun! This is a light and sweet read that I'm sure I'll read again.

This story was enjoyable. I don't have much to say here. I did like the story in general. Alex was comical and interesting. Even his twin Micah and his parter JT were cool.

Such a cute story! I absolutely adored the twins, and Thor wasn't so bad himself. Being a certified geek myself, I appreciated the humor in the book. Great job.

I don't know why this is classed as a HFN. I was perfectly happy with that ending.
Cute story. I really liked Christian but Alex was a bit high maintenance.

Alex is feeling overwhelmed with his big project. His brother and his boyfriend hook him up with Christian. Christian turns out to be just what he needs as long as he doesn't mess things up. It was cute to see Alex move back and forth between being confident and a messed up anxious mess. I loved the scene at the Maker contest.
