This is what Christian non-fiction should be like, straightforward and easy to understand, letting the Bible speak, with lots of real life examples and lots of encouragement.
With God as the perfect Father (and available to us all!) as a background, Derek Prince explores the responsibilities of men, the covenant meaning of marriage and the father's role as priest, prophet and king in his family.
Very interesting and helpful for women, too - we all long for that perfect father, don't we? And have to forgive the less than perfect ones ... It definitely did strike a chord in me.

Great read. It mentioned how a man is to be. priest, prophet and king to his family and the many ways to fulfill that role. delinquent fathers destroy families, society, culture and nations.

An often neglected topic, and much needed in today's society of broken homes, single parents and subcultures of young men shying away from their responsibilities as fathers and husbands.

“Husbands and Fathers: Rediscover the Creator's Purpose for Men” by Derek Prince
I loved DP, in my early Christian years 18-30’ish I listened and read everything of his.
So it is only natural to have bought this book and read it.
Good stuff, gotta respect the man.
But more than a decade later his legacy is tainted by the dogmatic Zionism, 'End Times' dogma, and submission of wives, all of which are infused in this book, that we now see is wrong side of history.
So, my rating settles in the middle. 3 stars.

In Matthew 11:27
Jesus lays down the principles that apply first to knowing Him as the Son of God and then to knowing God as His Father:
“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and he to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

This was a good book. Entering into being a Father myself, this book was quite encouraging and also challenging. A lot to think about. Prince brings a balanced Biblical perspective to what it means to be a Godly Husband and Father. It was a great book.

Met dit heldere bijbelonderwijs brengt Dr. Prince een bijzonder belangrijk onderwerp aan de orde: Gods vaderschap en de uitwerking daarvan in christelijke gezinnen.

Pretty good primer to the biblical role of husbands and fathers as directed in scripture. Some of it was couched in charismatic doctrine and language, but overall the author paints a good picture of the responsibility of the man of the house and what that looks like practically.

"I want to suggest to you that to succeed in other capacities and to fail as a husband or father is, in God's sight, to fail. No other successes can make up for that failure" (p.14). Derek Prince begins with that bold statement for men.

The 3 parts of the book are "Personal", "Husbands", and "Fathers".

He describes the ideal Christian marriage as a beautiful, prophetic message. The husband has "the privilege to demonstrate toward his wife the same kind of sacrificial, self-giving love that Christ has for His Church" (p.25).

The husband's responsibilities include to love your wife ("genuine love is released by an act of the will"), receive input, make decisions, initiate action, nourish and cherish ("she should always have the confidence that to her husband she is the most important person in the world"), and give praise.

In return, the role of the wife is to be a helper, submitting to her husband, supporting and upholding, encouraging, and interceding for her husband. "Many women today think, 'if I am a helper, I'm inferior.' That is a mistake. In the Body of Christ no one is superior or inferior to anyone else. Each of us is given a place and function. What God requires of us is faithfulness in the particular place and function He has assigned us" (p.35).

He correctly points out, however, that "without the fear of the Lord in both husband and wife, a Christian marriage can never become what God intends it to be" (p.46).

With regard to fatherhood, my favorite quote of the book is as follows:

"In the same way that Christ represents God to the man, then, the man is responsible to represent Christ to his family. That is quite a job description for a father! There are, I believe, three main ministries of Christ in which the father should represent Him to his family: priest, prophet, and king" (p.69).

As a priest you represent your family to God, and as prophet you represent God to your family (p.76). He gives various tips on how to lead the household as a father, particularly in raising children in a Biblical way. And as king, "he governs his family on behalf of God [...] the father sits at the head of the home. He puts himself between his family and all the pressures and dangers of life. He also goes in front of them and sets an example of godly living" (p.86).

There is a chapter where he compares Abraham and Lot with their contrasting visions. He asks us to reflect on the following:

“What kind of example have I been setting for my family? Am I giving them eternal purposes and eternal standards to live by? Or am I compromising my standards and commitments for the sake of material prosperity and worldly success? […] a father imparts to his family the vision that directs his own life […] What vision am I imparting to my family? Am I inculcating eternal values that will direct them into lives of service for Jesus Christ? Or am I concerned primarily with worldly success – a career, material comfort, financial independence, status in the community?” (p.97)

This is a fantastic first reading into being a husband and father. As my wedding day approaches I was reflecting on how little I knew about the roles of the man in a biblical marriage. Thank you Mr. Prince for this guide, it has been a source of great inspiration, especially in these fallen times. "God intends the Christian family to be a source of light to a darkened world."
